okay, what am i reading about taking claritan with the neualast shots? help. and have your docs told you guys about fasting before chemo. i am feeling SO left out.....:(
-
I'm feeling a little out of the loop myself, determined. Nobody ever said anything to me about fasting. In fact, I've been eating like a pig. Trying to eat healthy, but I've been craving carbs since I started chemo. I didn't know about the Claritin either. What's up with that? It's probably a post that I missed somehow.
-
@suzy..perhaps one of our friend will come along with some enlightenment
oh friends.......where are you?? sounding like my son. when he doesn't see us he says "dada/mama...are you?" he forgets to insert "where". he will get there, just like we will getting to a healthier state. i am feeling it!
-
Anyone else gotten their period three weeks or more into AC chemo?
-
Determined: don't mind me and the fasting. I'm not sure I would recommend it. Look up Valter Longo's research on chemo and fasting if you want to learn more. I am probably going to skip it for the next two treatments.
-
Sorry--don't know anything about the neulasta stuff--not what I get. BUT...I did get my period this week...AND I've got a Mirena IUD AND have had 3 weekly chemo treatments already. Oh, and my son had another seizure at school today. The universe hates me. Windlass, I'm so glad that you're happy with your haircut. I know that's been hard on you.
Needing some GOOD news around these parts!
-
Profbee, sorry to hear about the seizure! so scary. I might be moving to treatments every three weeks, the neupogen may not be right for me. Time will tell.
-
hey Rangermom ...ask for the special cream you put it on and it numbs it 20 mins before when you have a port I have a 1 inch needle that goes in and I dont feel it ...good luk
-
Prof b
The universe loves you but I know what you mean. I hope your son is ok.
Some low life emptied my bank accouunt this week end while I was in the throws of chemo. Luckily I have protection at my bank but e-gads, like I needed to deal with that right now! Then... My new computer that I bought less than 2 weeks ago broke this morning so now I gotta take that back. I'm just setting here thinking "WTF?"
-
Profbee: Do they have any idea what's causing your son's seizures? That is so scary! All you need right now is another health scare in your family. My prayers are with you all.
-
Thanks friends. In the past, Jack's seizures were all related to fevers, and that's pretty typical for kiddies. But, these last 2 (the one during my first chemo treatment and now today--sheesh) aren't fever-related, so now we're into testing and specialists. He had an EEG today, we're seeing his neurologist tomorrow morning, and my oncologist gave us a referral to the head of the epilepsy program at Boston Children's Hospital. Yay! Because, y'know, we don't have enough doctors in our lives right now. ugh.
Merilee--that's AWFUL! See! You're must be feeling just like me. WHY is the universe targeting us? LOL! We need to go in the woods and dance naked or something and get some good mojo from somewhere.
Where's the life reset button? Something is on the fritz.
I wish I even WANTED a cocktail right now.
-
determined - actually my doc told me to be sure and eat before coming on chemo day...
I am getting the TAC cocktail and get the neulasta shot two days after - they say the claritin helps counteract the bone pain. I took it last round and didnt have nay bone pain.
Merilee - ye Gods girl! Sending you all good thoughts.
-
Profbee...I've heard FABULOUS things about the epilepsy program at BU. I have a dear friend whose son (7 or 8 yrs old) has been treated there for the past few years and they head in from Rhode Island. That said, I know you don't need another health adder on your plate, but you'll find the strength. And what you don't have, we'll loan some out to you.
Raises hand for period last week. Did a big WTF since I thought we were shutting off the ovaries. It was week two. Should probably write the date down. Hmmm.
I don't know about Claritin and Neulasta, but I have seasonal allergies in the spring have been taking Zyrtec daily for the past few weeks and continuing through the chemo regieme.
Thinking I need to pull out a hat or a scarf tomorrow, starting to look patchy.
-
Profbee and merilee - sending you good vibes that all these major bumps in your path have all cleared and only good things coming your way from here on out till you are cancer free! halleluja and amen
I got my EMLA cream. good to go for tomorrow! Feel Like Alice in wonderland jumping down the rabbit hole! TAKE good care of yourselves. Later,
LindaJ

I put a piece of Saran Wrap over my port after the numbing cream. It sticks right on, keeps the cream on, keeps my clothes dry and it's cheap!
-
Definitely use the saran wrap on the numbing cream. I didn't know that, and twice now I've applied it and had no numbness. You apparently need to apply a lot, an hour before, and keep it covered with plastic wrap for it to take effect.
-
Okay, will do the plastic wrap. I bought surround seal bandages but they breathe and I wondered if you don't want it to breathe to really work good. Going to the dentist in the morning for teeth cleaning, then chemo at 10 am. I'm taking the day off but hope to work on Friday. Get the neulasta on Friday too and I'll try the claritan. Do you only have to take it the day of or do you do more than that? thanks
-
Hi. I just started chemo today, T/C, and it wasn't bad. They gave me lots of extras in the iv, but I did take steroid yesterday, today & tomorrow.
Saran is the kicker on the cream. Worked like a charm with my smart port.
Have had some side effects, will eat light for the next few days and get imodium if necessary and light /easy foods, small meals should help too. Really good tips on chemo forum.
Your stories are wonderful, great to see ?s answered too.
I cut my hair before surgery, below my shoulders, but got a wig and tons of neat scarfs. Will shave my head, my hubby and son (9) can't wait to see that. My daughter, not so much. She thinks the wig is a better idea(15 years old).
Best wishes going out to all of you while we continue this journey. Have a great nite. -
Merilee and Profbee -- just want to send some extra hugs your way. I'm so sorry for all the extra stress in your lives at the moment. Hope things get better soon. Thinking of you.....
-
CarylC! Saran wrap! Brilliant!
-
@ ranger mom, if you read this b4 your treatment, i was told to put A LOT on, make it thick. i was wondering why i still felt the pinch this am for my blood draw. the dude told me that i had to put a lot on there to a point where i can't see that part of my chest. oh, it prob did not help that i did not know to use saran wrap, so it prob. wiped off a bit.
-
I kept reading about Claritin on this board, and found numerous references on other boards, including that Stanford is studying Claritin for Neulasta pain, but can't find verification of that. Since I take Claritin for spring allergies, anyway, I didn't hesitate to take it when Neulasta came along. I don't know if it worked, or if I wouldn't have hurt, anyway.
ProfB: blessings on your household with all you're going through. -
I read a couple of non-academic studies re: fasting before chemo, and had to do some hard thinking about it. The idea, as I understand it, is that fasting makes normal cells hunker down in survival mode, and therefore less likely to be damaged by chemo. After talking it over with my naturopath, I decided feeding myself lots of protein to promote cell-building was a better goal for me. There's so little proven out there that we all have to make decisions based on what we know, believe, hope - it's such a crapshoot...
-
determined -- I wasn't told to fast. They bring me supper during my treatments.
windlass -- start a week after my 1st chemo and it was horrible!!! Dr says that was probably the last one since it was already in the process when I had my first chemo.
Put alot of the EMLA cream on and cover with saran wrap. I got poked twice for my port access today. The first one the needle wasnt long enough so they went in with a 1 inch. I didn't feel a thing. I really dislike the Benadryl they gave me I will be hung over all day tomorrow so no work for me. No steroids for me this time, it made my blood sugars fly high. I got Emends in pill form. Those buggers are $100.00 a pill. Thank goodness for insurance!!!
profbee --- hope your little man is doing better!
When life throws tomatoes make sauce!
Lights out for me!
-
Anyone have problems having blood drawn from their port? Last week it worked fine but yesterday they couldn't get any and I had to get it out of my arm and then a blood prick from my finger because of the Coumidin, that's 2 too many needles for me, LOL. I want to avoid that every week - any hints or tips for this?
-
hi everyone!
sounds like i missed alot during the storms and everything going on in my world the past few days!! so sorry about the baby profbee! do whatever to me but not the baby!!! hang in there sweetie!! i get the shot and they told me to take claritin the day of chemo since i get the shot the next day.but i take it everyday for about 5 days i think...its supose to help with the bone pain.don't know if it does but i didn't want to not take it!!!if you know what i mean!!!
so last night was night 17 and the hair was coming out in handfulls!!! i got my husband to shave it off!! was hoping it would hold out til sat but it didn't but i didn't cry ( not yet) my husband did his as well.its not that bad lookin...
my daughter got upset and my husband told me to leave her be and she came back to my room and talked to me.she got over it and this morning it was like old news!!:) sorry about the novel here just catching up and sorry all the new girlies, not sure where everyone one at with treatment but hang on its a bumpy ride!! and it is sooo doable just a major pain in the rear!!!
ain't this fun!!!
-
I got a huge shock today -- I tested positive for Lyme disease!
Lyme and chemo don't go together well at all, since the immune suppression from the chemo apparently causes the Lyme to grow out of control. This could account for my borderline heart ejection MUGA scan results (55%), since Lyme apparently causes carditis and damages the heart (in addition to damaging the thyroid, causing chronic fatigue, etc.) Now apparently I am going to have to go on massive antibiotics to get through the rest of treatment.
WTH! How long have I had this?!?
Another note - I never took Claritin, and have not gotten any bone pain from Neulasta. (Thank goodness for small favors. I am grateful wherever I can find them.)
-
Windlass, my hair is falling out in small clumps and little showers. I buzzed mine on Monday. It is still hanging in sort of. I had thick hair to begin with. Amazing how much gray I have! The Emend is working great and I was able to eat yesterday and today. Not heavily, I don't want to risk a episode of vomiting! The nueslasta shot was given today and I feel ok so far.
-
Linda: Sorry to hear about your hair, too. I think your wig will look great. Can you post a photo with you wearing it? And thank goodness they gave you Emend this time around. I can't imagine they didn't the last time - it's now considered the standard of care. Neulasta was a breeze for me.
Hang in there!
-
OMG!! windlass!! i will keep you in my prayers lady!! i keep trying to find reason why people are delt the cards they have and i just can't wrap my mind around it...hang in there my friend and lots of huggs coming your way!!!
