Tumor Marker Tests
Do any of you have to do blood tumor markers (CA15-3) as part of follow-up? What are your numbers like?

Patsy, My onc does not believe in tumor markers. He thinks they are misleading and unreliable because they are often elevated for reasons that have nothing to do with cancer. I know this is true because my sister's onc does them on her f/u visits and hers have been high twice but the reasons were from other medical issues that had nothing to do with her BC. I have not pushed to have them done after seeing the way her's have done and how much she worries about the test being high until they can confirm it is not a recurrence. I think the test is very flawed. Another friend has had them done annually and they did not test high when she had mets. These are the reasons I have no faith in this particular test. I think if someone wants to have them done that is fine but I would not put much faith or worry in the results. Hopefully some others will come along soon and answer your question about the numbers--for I truly don't know about that. Hope you do not find this posting discouraging but all I can do is give my opinion. Good luck with all, Ginny

Hi Patsy,
My onc also doesn't believe in tumor markers for the reasons Ginny listed. He prefers to do yearly scans (MRI/mammo every 6 months, PET yearly).
He also feels that patients get "fixed on a number" needlessly, given the unrealiability of the test, and that we are going through enough without added anxiety!
good luck. hope you are well.

The tumor marker tests are ALL my onc does as follow up! No scans or anything unless I have some definitive symptoms. Kind of scarees me! I will have my first one in 2 weeks.

My ONC does do tumor marker tests, I think every 3-6 months for the first year, then not so much. My CA15-3 was at 2 in January and he said anything less than 32 was normal. Also he does a CEA which was 0.5 and anything less than 2.5 is normal. I had CT/PET scans in early March per my insistance. I didn't want to go ahead with my exchange surgery until I knew I had clean scans. I know that he is not fond of doing these scans without symptoms but I needed a little "peace of mind". I just met my first year milestone from DX and BMX.

i have had CA27.29 done every 6 months along with chemistry for blood work. i stopped having scans (PET/CT) about 4 years ago. (the CA27.29 is similar to the CA15-3) my tumor markers have ranged from 32 (during treatment) to 14, 16, 20, and the last few times 22. for me, i like having the tumor marker done..i like to see what is going on there. at this point, after 9 years...i pretty much go by "how i feel" or if i feel any lumps where there are not supposed to be, still get mammo each year. and i still i think important to do liver enzymes...etc.
for me, my idea of all of this now is....if my cancer comes back; eventually i will know it...either by symptoms or blood work. until then, feeling good...and enjoying each day* keep on**
hugs to all

My onc doesn't do tumor markers routinely. Mine were run at the time of diagnosis and, despite my honking big tumors, the markers were normal. She only uses them when she needs a quick idea about how someone is doing.

My oncologist does the tumor markers and other blood work only, no scans unless I have symptoms. My tumor marker was 20 before I had surgery. I actually have no idea what it has been other times. I have had the test again but it is not on my chart, which I love to read while getting Herceptin because I am crazy in this way. I like to read stuff then go home and look it up on the internet, very interesting.

My BS and MO do not like the tests as they give little information and cause a lot of anxiety. Tumor Markers may go up because of an infection for example. My Mo and BS do physical exam on a 6 month basis, so I am getting one each 6 months, my mammo and US are done 2x ayear, they feel they give more accurate info. than TM's.

My onco did my tests for CEA which was 1.2, CA15-3 was 30.9 & CA27-29 was 42.1. The last one freaked me out. She tells me not to worry cuz my others are in the normal range, ya easy for her to say

My onc also only does bloodwork (and CA27.29) on my visits (which are now only every four months...soon to be every six months). No scans unless I have a problem I want checked out. Actually, I've never tested that...I would assume he'd order a scan if I had a problem. He was agreeable to order a CT/PET scan about five months before I had my recon simply because I wanted to make sure things were still clear (no sense spending that amount of money if I was going to buy the farm in a few months).

Never had one, my dr doesn't like them...says it can give you false positives and make us worry for nothing. She says she trust me and my symptoms more than them...she does know I'm a paranoid freak-a-zoid, right?
-
My doctor likes them so I get the CEA which is always less than .4 and then the CA15.3...which used to range between 15-19 but now seems to range between 17-21.I have always wondered what numbers other people have.....however my oncologist says that my 15 could be the same as someone else's 5....that the numbers are very individual so it isn't something that can really be compared from person to person.....but I am curious just the same.Jacqueline

After my lumpectomy and Mammosite rads last August, my CA 27.29 was 34. In January it rose to 39. In March it was at 64. In the meantime, I developed a complex lesion/seroma almost overnight in February that turned out to be about a 5 cm recurrence along with at least 4 nodes involved! And oh, my CEA was 0.8. For me the CA 27.29 was certainly providing a clue. I will certainly insist upon this test in the future, as it was indicative of trouble brewing; although with that 34, I wonder if there wasn't still cancer present at the time.

I have had my Ca 15.3 checked 3 times now- once after surgery and before chemo and the other 2 times have been after chemo and radiation. They have been between 31-33. My oncologist says that some women have a higher baseline and as long as mine don't rise, he is sure that these are my normal readings. They worried me at first but now that they have remained stable I am not thinking about my tumor markers.

My onc does them, but they are notoriously unreliable. Many oncs don't do them for this reason.

I just had the scare of my life. I had a marker test on March 12th and it was at 40. I asked them to repeat it on April 13th and it was 48. My onc said ok, now we go for the petscan. I couldn't sleep and all i kept thinking about is this stuff crept back into my lungs...no its my liver, ok I bet its my spine. this went on and on until I took the petscan....nothing!!! no explanation for the increased numbers. Last good number was 20 just 6 months ago. Don't trust those numbers because even stress plays a roll in the increased numbers.
