I'm curious to know what vitamin d levels we have in this forum.

I had a feeling my levels were low so I started taking 1000mg and sat in the sun for 20 minutes everyday for two months. I did all that 6 months before my dx. After my dx I was tested, it was 18. I believe my levels were much lower unknowingly.

When i met with my first oncologist January 2010, my D level was a 6. WAAYYYYY too low! So she put me on Vit D3 50,000 IU once a week. At my last blood test in March, my level was an 80 (much better!!)

@klaw..I think my pcp was reading the test wrong and gave me wrong results. Ever year I would ask for my vitamin d levels and he would say "Your levels are good".

Your profile says dx in Aug 09 but you didn't see your onc until Jan 2010?

    Hi

Yeah i got my dreaded news aug 09. had mastectomy 11/4/09, lymph nodes removed 1/7/10, met with a sloan kettering onc in Jan and started tamoxifen, march had implant surgery and started radiation.

i just started with a new onc. last month because i wasn't comfortable with the sloan kettering chick.

but yeah, i wasn't referred to an onc. until after my mastectomy.

    This is a good question!

I have never had mine checked and need to do so, I am not an outside person(don't like bugs, and them not me) recently I just started taking 10,000 units a day.  I will and everyone should check in with Drs.  I am guilty of doing what I think may be best for me when I see something I think will help me.

    Take care til later.

iLinda..you should have your levels checked before embarking on megadoses. Vitamin D is fat soluble so it can be toxic.

I just had the blood test on monday to check my levels. I will report back with the findings of the test. It seems to be a common theme for black women.

    Thatgirl,

Thanks, I am sure that may be known, you are right that my levels should be checked by the Dr., and I will do that soon.  Because some of our Drs. are not aware of supplements, I have done alot on my own for survival of 12 1/2 years.   I  have been on Chemo every year for 8 years of the past 9 years, with an 8 month break(CA came back for the 6th time in 2009)---Chemo every week and when I was on certain pills: every day for a time.   So I  have tried many things on my own, to counter/cross the Chemo just to live with minimal of side effects." I certainly don't advise this for no one to do" .   I know I am "favored by God" for all that is going on with me---I continue to stand strong..

I always will appreciate all the information I hear from my Sisters on these posts.  This is what helps to carry us too.

    Stay Blessed.     .

@Linda .....I have no words. You had a reoccurrence 6 times? Chemotherapy 8 years? I have no words that could possibly make it better.

Hello you beautiful ladies! Linda I love you spirit and outlook on life. You are a blessing.

My Vit. D levels came back at 11 way 2 low. I am on a 50,000mg dose once per week. The side effects of low levels mirror how i feel in so many ways.

Wow, the levels for some on this thread are in the range of rickets!  There are several long threads on Vitamin D but perhaps it is best to restart the conversation.

There are two ways to talk about Vitamin D levels.  Think of these as feet and inches versus meters and millimeters.  It is important to know which measurement your report is using because the "normal range" varies with the measurement used.

If your test is in ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter) the range is from 30 ng/ml to 74 ng/ml.

If your test is in nmol/L (nanomoles per liter) the range is from 50 nmol/L to 140 nmol/L

    Hope this helps.

    ILinda,

Was your 75 in ng/ml or nmol/l ?  If your score was in ng/ml then you are near the top of the recommended range.  If your score was in nmol/l then you are in the lower end of normal.  Please check your report or with your doctor to see which measurement was used.

Wow, interesting to see what our levels were. Just had mine checked 2 weeks ago. I've been taking  vitamin D 2000-4000 IU daily since end of radiation about 14 months ago and my level 2 weeks ago was 39!

My level for vitamin D was a 50! I have been on 50,000 a week since mid Jan. I also made great efforts to sit in the sun when it was out for at least 45min. I am going to continue this plan until my levels are in the 80-90 range.

Thatgirl! I'm with you on a goal of 80-90 and I, too, expected greater gains with supplementation. Apparently this is definitely something that we'll have to work on as a long term goal. Interesting, though, isn't it!
