Is this for real?

In 2008 I had mx, diep, chemo & rads, in that order. On Friday I found a rather sizeable lump (an inch?) in the top corner of the recon near my sternum.  Is it even possible it could be a recurrence?  I checked on fat necrosis - doesn't fit. What else could it be??

Hi ~  It's a bit hard to self-dx fat necrosis.  I had a lump in my Diep breast that an excellent local radiologist dx'd as a cyst.  He even showed it to me on u/s.  But both my BS and PS @ UCLA immediately said was fat necrosis.  So even competent docs can miss fat necrosis if they're not as familiar with Diep recon.  And my PS still removed it during my Stage II surgery and had it biopsied, just to be sure.

Obviously, you need to get it checked out.  It could also be scar tissue, but you certainly don't want to wait and worry about it any longer than you have to.

Good luck, and please let us know what you find out!    (((Hugs)))   Deanna

Please get it checked out. The only way to rule out fat necrosis vs. cancer is to biopsy it. I had a lump for three years near the edge of my tram flap. I was told by radiologist three years in a row, nothing to worry about. Finally my ocologist sent me for a biopsy - and yes it was a recurrence. This happened one year ago. The surgeon took out several small areas that were cancerous. It took two surgeries to get clean margins. As of today, I have several small areas under my arm that are sore and suspicious. I go back to the doc next week. PS I am also on Aromasin since last year
