Wow it's going to be hard to stop.
I haven't made the full committment yet, but have gotten rid of the containers of sugar and any sweet treats in the pantry and begun to read this thread.
But today i was doing errands and thought of getting a dessert. I considered what I wanted and it was a slice of a particular pie. I'll avoid naming the pie so as not to arouse images in someone's head! Then I decided where to go and ate and enjoyed it greatly. Only as I drove away from the restaurant did I realize what I'd just done. Then I shopped for and bought a bunch of Easter stuff for 3 little boys - with only a tiny bit of candy. I ate supper and the next thing i knew i was eating the candy and then it was gone!
Guess I need to do some journaling to remind myself why I want to do this. And i will not bring sweets into the house again.
Perhaps re-reading Wm. Dufty's book, Sugar Blues, will be good inspiration. It's really old, but quite entertaining to read. He's a bit shrill, but one had to be back when he wrote it.
Thank you for being here and sharing your strategies!
-
Since I cut sugarI actually have to remind myself to eat some fruit because I don't miss it.
-
Granydukes...is Sushi out of the question for you? There are so many varieties and maybe you would enjoy that? Spring Rolls perhaps? They just remind me of little salads.
Have you made any smoothies? Treated yourself to a good cookbook?
-
Grannydukes, your diet limitations coupled with your interest in gaining weight, perhaps going sugar free is not right for you.
BTW I eat two squares of the Lindt 85% Chocolate every day. I love chocolate but at 85% is doesn't have a lot of sugar (less than 1 teaspoon). It satisfies my sweet craving without making me want more.
-
I dip my 85% Lindt or 86% Ghirardelli in peanut butter or almond butter - I figure the protein helps to neutralize some of the sugar effect by lowering the overall GI of the combination... it also makes it taste even better to me. Mmmmm....
I made my first green juice this morning as per Crazy Sexy Diet. I just put a peeled cucumber (because it wasn't organic) and 4 small celery stalks & 2 little carrots through my juicer. I drank it on an empty stomach first thing this morning. Not only was it really interesting, fresh, and yummier than expected ~ it made my coffee taste rotten a few minutes later. I LOVE coffee, but today it tasted heavy, too rich, not "fresh" tasting, and actually kind of like the rotten breath it gives me! This book says coffee is highly acidic and is a no-no. I would never think to give it up, but after this green drink I can see how they don't go hand in hand. My family tried a sip too, dd16 liked it okay, DH drank it, dd11 did not care for it. And she is my greens eater!
Eating fresh foods, whole foods, with lemon, ginger, herbs, garlic... this type of cooking makes sugary foods not sound good.
I am coming up on one full week of being mostly sugar free! My skin broke out, developed an undeserved yeast infection due to the time of the month, but I read this is normal with detox. Otherwise feeling pretty good about it, and have not had any major cravings. My kids requested pop-tarts and mini-muffins from the grocery store, and I told DH (he was running to the store - hooray!) that they needed to pick one or the other and also choose a nut and a vegetable and a fruit for lunches.
Planning to bake some homemade granola bars today, half dark chocolate cherry, the other half dark chocolate coconut.
Adapting Alton Brown's recipe from foodtv.com... -
Some "non-cancer" thoughts tell people to drink warm water with lemon as their first drink in the morning because it is acidic. Well, if coffee is acidic, why can't you do that instead?
-
I gave up sugar - but still use a ittle bit of honey, or agave in my tea.
My "sweet treat" - especially in summer, is to go to Trader Joes and buy Froze Mango - and put it in a Cuisinart, or blender, getting it soft - and eating it like sherbert! It you refreeze it, it tends to go very hard - unless you add a few drops of rum. Yum.
I'm reading the NYTimes Sunday Magazine article now - here's to bittersweet chocolate...
-
uhoh. Easter egg hunt today after Mass - need I say more? I think my current total of small, chocolate toxins (ie bars) is 6. hershey's miniatures have always been my weakness.
on the up side, i just made a ricotta pie without sugar - just lemon zest and juice. we'll see. off to Palm Sunday dinner at my aunt's. checking in here today will remind me to behave!
ooh, like the frozen mango idea, sunflowers. going to try that.
xmas dx, you are powering through the sugar free life! i admire that.
have a great day, ladies.

C-S - few drops of rum LOL - yup sounds like a plan...
Barbe - acidic coffee to start the day, I guess for now I agree since I don't plan to stop right?

elmcity - good luck with the dinner!! It's so hard during Easter... I have just learned over & over that every day holds some excuse... every season... it's the "HOLIDAYS" then it's Valentine's, then Easter, then birthdays, graduations, weddings and reunions, then Halloween... we are surrounded by candy and junk coming at us from all directions.
I'm trying to stop looking at this as depriving myself, and start looking at it as if the world is out to sabotage me (it is! At least in the aspect of food!) and I need to have my guard up to block it. When I chose my avatar, I picked it because I thought it was cute and it was red & green ~ now I'm so glad it's a healthy food like organic farm apples (a 4 apple blend which makes great sugar-free applesauce). I think I'll have some right now!
-
Who told me I need a cookbook??????thank you.Im sure i can find a few items that my stomach can handle.
im watching the sugar pretty closely. If i have to have a small piece of chocolate its only the very dark. But its in everything else too.
And the veggies!!!!!! those darn things are the most important.
Thank you sistas for once again sharing the stop sugar.xoxoxoK
ps.i hate sushi.picky and food deprived is not a good combo.i cannot even swallow hot cereal.it reminds me of wall paper glue.
-
Grannydukes, have you tried a powder green food for the veggie nutrition? I used to add something like green super foods to a shake or water to get some of the nutrients I was missing...just a thought, don't know if you would have a hard time with it.
-
Grannydukes, perhaps browse www.allrecipes.com and www.foodtv.com and other recipe sites also, if you look long enough I'm sure you will find some good recipes of things you can have that are also healthy. The advantage is that you do not need to look for low-fat recipes, so that leaves you pretty open to anything you like. In addition to pasta, do you like rice or quinoa?
-
today im not gonna do anything.I think I have lymphedema in the breast to add to all the rest of this crap.....ill eat my peanut butter, apple, banana, ensure, spoon of coconut oil, drink a glass of almond milk, have some licorice and a piece of fish.im exhausted from all of this.FOOD AND I DONT LIKE EACH OTHER.ESPECIALLY WHEN IM EMOTIONAL.

((((hugs))) Grannydukes
-
Breakdown I am enjoying my guilty pleasure.
-
Grannydukes, try putting the banana in the freezer. It is quite delightful.
I have just received my copy of Crazy Sexy Diet. Won't be doing the colon cleanse!
-
I just ate a nutra grain pomagranite bar slathered in peanut butter along with a banana, glass of almond milk and my vitamins.later ill have an ensure and a piece of chocolate.
everyone deserves a day off.today is mine....im just sick of all this crap.
-
pip57, yeah I hear ya! The colon cleanse/enema concept was over the top for me too. But other ideas in the book are more workable... I am so happy with my green juice from this morning!
grannydukes, I don't think that sounds like a day off, I think that sounds like a day on! Good job!
mumayan, tell me about it, what are you having???? I want to live vicariously!

Granola bars in the oven and you better believe I'm having one when they are done, chocolate, brown sugar, honey & all!!!
-
Thank you for starting this thread. I am also a sugar addict trying to quit. It as been 3 days so far. Something I make for a snack is bake a sweet potato make slices on the short axis, and sprinkle with cinnamon.
Nancy -
I like those little pudding cups or a jello cup. Sweet enough, but without going crazy. I don't do artificial sweeteners.
-
I'm finding it difficult to give up sugar although I know I must. Ice cream is my weakness. I appreciate the tips that some of you are posting
-
They ruined yogurt with the artificial sweeteners. So now I buy the plain greek one with no flavourings.Just add fresh berries or fruit at home instead. Yum now I am hungry.
-
Mumayan, I think you are right. Even eating something with a sweet taste makes me want more sweet. I know the artificial sweeteners are not good for us regardless but I have such a sweet tooth.
-
I did as well but now after over 2 years of quitting I no longer have a sweet tooth.Pastries used to be my treats but now I can't even remember the last time I had one.
-
Xmasdx- I love this thread! Thank you! It's time for me to get serious about the sugar in my life. Btw, I love Crazy Sexy Diet and drink her green juice many mornings. Please pass on your favorite recipes-esp the easy ones.
Barb- lemons, though acidic, are alkalizing in the body and are therefore very different from coffee. I am not prepared to give it up entirely. My morning ritual includes a fresh black americano. Mm.
I agree that there will always be excuses to indulge in treats with sugar... Easter, bdays, etc. I LOVE how I feel when I am in control and the associated benefits are a big bonus! So I'm starting again.... Thanks to this fabulous thread! - Daiva -
"sdstarfish: I just received your cookbook of scones this week and am counting the minutes until I can drive again (tmw, actually) so I can shop for the ingredients! each scone looks better than the next."
Janyce:Thanks so much for buying the Pink Kitchen SCONES cookbook! Message me if you have any questions.
As to glycemic index - I will try to help since a lot of my educational background pertains to nutrition.
Glycemic index definitely matters. The reason is that the faster your body metabolizes sugar, the faster your blood sugar rises to a level above what is considered healthy.
However, in healthy eating, there is balance. For example, although fructose (fruit sugar) raises blood sugar levels, fruit also contains tons of good things to heal us and help us. It is ok to eat fruit - but we should eat much less fruit than we do veggies.
Did you know that sweet potatoes are not actually a potato, by the way? AND- even better - sweet potatoes actually help lower blood sugar. You'd think it would be the opposite, right?!
Whole grains are important in regard to glycemic index, because the body reads white flour as sugar.
Now, regarding agave - that was an interesting article, but there are a few things missing. First, what are Kristen M.'s credentials as a health professional? Second, the way she describes the processing of agave is not how all agave syrup is processed. Long story that may bore you
But I'm happy to go into that if anyone is interested. There's a great book called "The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods." It breaks down different food categories in an intersting and helpful way.

Hi ladies -- I'm just joining in but love all the info here already! I just read the NY Times article and it is sobering (since I would say I definitely have metabolic syndrome: overweight, high BP, diabetes and BC -- ugh). I am finding that a calorie counter app on my smart phone really helps me to keep track of what I eat as well as to make food choices at restaurants. The other night we went to Chili's... the calorie counter I have can look up thousands of dishes in restaurants by name (and has a huge list of restaurants) as well as look up food items generically (for home cooking). There was a salad that had 1400 calories (!) and chicken fajitas (which has 350 - 500, depending on tortillas and cheese use -- I kept mine very minimal). If I had not had the counter I would have ordered the salad. But I think this is also useful in watching your sugar intake... and if you are a low carber it also helps because all entries link to nutritional info including carb content and sugar content. This is obviously more helpful if you are trying to lose weight (in addition to cutting sugar)... but thought I'd mention it. There are a large variety of these apps available.
LOL -- I just realized my picture is of some cookies I made for the holidays... guess I need a new avatar if I'm going to post here

-
Lilah, nice looking cookies! Thanks for the tip about the calorie counter. I'm going to check it out. It's hard to believe that the fajitas beat out the salad!
-
So glad I found this thread. We have to cut sugar out of the whole family's diet. My 10 year old was told last week that she needs to cut out her sugar. She has Crohn's disease. So the whole family is cutting it out. I think hopefully out of sight out of mind will work.
