Met with Breast Surgeon-Surgery Questions

I met with the Breast Surgeon today...although the radiologist said my large lump was "fat"  the Breast Surgeon said "no this is not fat and you can see it on the ultrasound imaging and it has changed"  So when I thought it had gotten bigger in the last month it had.  He said it is either Fibrocystic or Cancer, but a great chance it is Fibrocystic.  Either way he is removing it through surgery next Wednesday along with the small lump they think is a fibrodenoma and they are both getting biopsied.

Has anyone else had surgery to remove a lump?  What can I expect?  I am so scared it is cancer especially since I have been having other symptoms and found a tender lump/spot on my lower right rib that started a few days ago and has gotten worse...I have no idea what that could be.  I have also been sick to my stomach for the last 2 weeks...I eat a little and feel full and sick almost right away... and I have upper back/shoulder pain in the same shoulder as the lump only on the back....If I didn't have all these other symptoms going on I would probably not be as scared...Has anyone else had symptoms with there breast cancer?  Upon palapatation he said my lymph nodes felt good...did those with lymph node involvement have pain in the lymph nodes...so many question I know...and I don't even have a DX yet...my mind is racing though...

Is there anything I should do to prepare for surgery?

I don't have any advice as far as your lumpectomy, but I am so glad the breast surgeon is willing to remove it.

    NJDevChick,

I had 2 positive nodes but I only felt one. I had pain in the left armpit around that time of the month. Everyone said it can't be cancer because, cancer does not hurt. I was also told that my lump was probably fibroadenoma but it was not. :(  There is no cancer in my family and I turned out to be Brca2. As for the other symptoms you are feeling, they are probably just your nerves. I would not worry about it until you get the path report. Oh and surgery is no problem. If they start taking out the lumphnodes then it can be painful but still not too bad. I originally had a lumpectomy and 15 Lymphnodes removed on the left side. After surgery I found out I was brca 2 and I didn't want radiation so I decided to have a mastectomy.  You will be fine. Unfortunately I've had 6 surgeries in a year...don't ask...and it was fine. You can do it!!

What did your armpit pain feel like?  I had that 2 months ago, in both armpits, but worse in my left where the mass is.  I didn't even ask about lymph node removal to be checked because he told me he is 95% sure it is fibrocystic.  It is just that the mass is BIG...like 5+ cm by 2 cm and doesn't hurt other than the occasional shooting pain in that area. And it feel HARD...originally it was smooth but has gotten much lumpier in the last month.  Can cancer get noticably bigger in a month?!
