DCIS in both breasts
left lateral lumpectomy 4 years ago with dx of atypical ductal hyperplasia. then radiologist found something curious in august 2010, sent to breast imaging center in feb 2011. long story short, after left and right biopsies, then two lumpectomies, learned i have DCIS in both breasts. my surgeon would not normally suggest mx, but since it's both and still have ADH showing up also and materal aunt who had cancer...also parents have had cases, he DID recommend bi-lat mx with immediate reconstruction. going with pedicle tram flap. scheduled for april 29th. holding up well. just trying to keep busy, both body and mind. looking for support, encouragement and words of wisdom. not sure this has totally hit me yet

It will get better. I had BMX 2/25/2011. Just returned to work 4/5/2011 and have tissue expanders in. Just prepare physically and mentally for the surgery. Eat good, exercise, make some casseroles to freeze, get all your ducks in a row! Sounds like you have the right mindset. You will find a lot of support here on this forum. All the best to you!

Hi SuziQ-
Sorry to hear that you have joined this club. I had a BMX about a year ago, it is doable, but the flap recovery time is definitely pretty tough. I chose a local surgeon who was probably less experienced than he should have been (although he was supposedly the best at my National Cancer Institute Hospital) and had a lot of problems that I have had to have 4 subsequent surgeries to fix up.
I know this is a sensitive topic on the boards, but did your PS give you options beyond pedicled TRAM flap (where both 6-pack or rectus muscles are taken from the abdomen), such as free TRAM (where they just take a cuff of muscle from the abdomen) or DIEP (like a TRAM except no muscle is taken). The reason I bring it up is that I had a free TRAM where only a small amount of muscle was taken from the rectus "6 pack" muscle, but since then I definitely have some weakness in the abdomen and also had problems with a big poochy belly that I had to get fixed at another revision. I have heard that problems with hernias, etc are much more common with the pedicled and free TRAMs b/c they take some of our core muscles out.
It might be worth finding out a little more about why your doc is recommending pedicled TRAM (where the entire rectus muscle is taken from both sides) over another procedure that would be muscle sparing. There are definitely reasons why docs will recommend the muscle-taking procedures, and there are definitely women who are happy with those procedures, but there are many women who have had muscle sparing procedures with great results. Since you have a little time until your surgery, it may be worth checking out some of the threads in the breast reconstruction forum and just finding out a bit more info from your doctor about why that particular recommendation was made for you.
This is a tough, scary time, but you will make it through. I am a year out from diagnosis and on Friday will be my 1 year post BMX, and it does get better with time I have found. (((hugs)))

I had BMX 5/1/09 with no reconstruction. I cannot speak to the TRAMs and how it effects your healing time. I do have some suggestion; get lots of soft pillows since you will haev to sleep on you back. I made a nest of them had them so my arm resting on them. Also make an appointment to get your hair washed a day or two after you get home. You will not be able to wash your hair very well and it feels so great to have clean hair after few days. Get extra large button up shirts to wear you can pin drain inside them too. Most of all breathe. Be kind to yourself. get a massage before surgery. You will find you are stronger than you know. Positive and healing thoughts.

I was diagnosed in both breasts, one in 09/07, the second in 11/07. I had to undergo several lumpectomies on each side to get clear margins and even with ADH at the margins my doctors left the mastectomy vs. radiation question up to me. After several stress filled months I ultimately decided on 6 weeks of radiation on both breasts + Tamoxifen. I finished radiation in May 2008 and everything has been fine during follow-up tests.
I had 3 maternal aunts with BC but when I took the BRCA test I was negative. I feel comfortable with my decision which is exactly what each of us ultimately needs to be.
Hope your procedure goes well.

here i am, almost 3 weeks out of bmx and tram flap. doing well, pretty sore. able to sleep on sides for a bit and have been shaving my own legs. had a terrible time with allergic reactions to tapes, etc from surgery. now dose myself in am with vit e lotion and in evening, i slather on the e-oil. not doing too much. taking walks for at least 1/2 mile couple times daily. feeling is starting to return in abdomen. did learn with pathology report that there was another area of cancer in left breast that had never been detected in any tests. made us know that the bmx was the right decision. i live in a very rural area, and opted for surgeons and hospital which is an hour away. pedicled tram not for everyone, but i would be willing to visit with any lady who has made that choice. best to you all!

SuzieQok - glad to hear that recovery is going well for you after BMX. Your update gives me encouragement!

I just had a BMX after being DX with DCIS with microinvasion, last friday. They tested my lymph nodes and they were clear. I had reconstruction at the same time and just got the drain tube out today. I am pretty happy with the way things are going and think my Foobs look pretty good. I got one nipple saved but the other one was too close to the cancer so they couldnt save it. The plastic surgeon said he would reconstruct a nipple in a couple of weeks when the sutures come out. They tattoo right in the office also.
I decided after being diagnosed with DCIS in the one breast to remove both breasts as I didnt want to have to do chemo, radiation or having a lumpectomy knowing I would probably have to do reconstruct the one side because my breasts were so small. I am so glad I made the decision I did. He said with this decision I have a 2% chance of it coming back and if I did the other it has a 25% chance of it coming back or mirroring itself on the other side.
