Medicare presc. drug "donut hole"

Options

My employer's insurance agent is helping me decide if I should go on Medicare instead of the company's med insurance. The agent recommends AARP, but they have a prescription drug "donut hole". After my drug cost exceeds $2800 and up until about $4500, I'm covered. However, I have to pay the $1700 for drugs in between. (Howq stupid is that?)

I'll ask him, too, but my current ins carries a hospital deductible of $2500.  I guess, on AARP,  if I go to the hospital, which would be less, it would make sense to go for the donut hole to balance it off.  If I don't go to the hospital, $1700 comes out of my pocket anyway.

Any comments?

Donut hole is Medicare rule, not just AARP or other insurance.  This year there's a 50% on non-generic druge in the donut hole. Are you looking at a Medicare Advantage (replaces Medicare A, B and D) or Medicare Aa nd B plus AARP supplemental insurance plus AARP prescription insurance ?  You can get info on Medicare from medicare.gov ...I spent the year between 64 and 65 trying to figure this out.

I'm looking at AARP for Medicare B and supplemental and D. As I mentioned, my company's insurance agent is helping me with this. He said that the literature the insurance companies send out is difficult to understand even for him, an insurance agent.
