Susan HG my story is very similiar to yours.  I went for a routine mammogran 4/10.  I had dense breast also.  I had always had an ultrasound scheduled along with my mammo.  4/9 went for my routine mammo and the radiologist came out to the waiting area to talk to me a stated my mammo looked good and they no longer routinely did ultrasound on people with dense breast.  After my husband, myself and the radiologist reviewed the April 2009 digital images with the 2010 it was obvious that irregularly shaped microcalcifications where present in 2009 but it was much more visible on the 2010 images.  A core bx show DCIS diffuse throughout the left breast.  I then had several opinions and numerous mammograms done.  The last mammo I had done showed a very faint shadow that looked suspicious.  This had not been seen on the other mammograms.  Anyway I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstructive surgery done 6/2010.  The final path report showed DCIS with a 1.8cm TN tumor!  What a surprise.  Lucky for me, I (and you Susan) had DCIS or the TN tumor would have probably been missed at the April 2010 mammo.  Just had exchange surgery March 17th., I home recouperating from that.  Surgery went well can't lift over 5lbs for 4 weeks and can't drive for 3 weeks.

Mine was found on MRI as part of workup protocol and noted as highly suspicious of cancer (washout for me was a clue).  It was very small .7mm but grade 3 triple negative IDC poorly differentiated just outside of lumpectomy cavity.   It was not actually diagnosed firmly until BMX/pathology 18 March 2011.  This journey started with yearly routine mammogram showing microcalcifications.
