I have been diagnosed with DCIS >5cm grade 3 and after 2 trials of lumpectomy I had mastectomy of my right breast. I am now recommended to take TAM for five years.

Can someone help me answering the following questions:

- Does TAM also help against reoccurance on remaining skin, mamille and part of tissue to supply skin?

- Is it correct that a reoccurante tumor after taking TAM has a 75% risk of being HR negativ?

- Would a new tumor on my left breast also habe a 75% chance of being HR negativ after having taken TAM?

- Would TAM be overtreatment after mastectomy?

Thanks for your information, well appreciated!!

Kind regards from Düsseldorf (Germany)

I'm limited in my knowledge but was diagnosed with right breast DCIS on 2/8/2010. I had Bilateral mastecomies on 2/25/2011. I'm ER+/PR-. I was told by the oncologist on 3/10/2011 that there was no need for any further treatment. Had I not had a mastectomy on my left I would've been placed on
Tamoxifen for 5 years, but since I had both removed the Tamoxifen was not needed. I ca'nt answer your other questions but from what I've read if the first breast diagnosis is ER+ then Tamoxifen is indicated for the non-cancerous breast to prevent any possible future cancer in the remaining breast if a mastectomy isn't performed.

Tamoxifen will reduce the chances of getting of an ER+ recurrence or new primary by about 50%. I don't know the stats but it would make sense to me that a disproportionally high number of recurrences/new primaries in women who are taking Tamoxifen might be ER- because the Tam doesn't have any effect on ER- cancer cells.

As far as Tam being overtreatment...I don't know. I had a single MX and have opted not to take it right now because my husband and I are going to start trying for children soon... but after kids I might consider going on it.
