Hi to all!

I apologize if this topic has been started before but I would love to know the hair care regimen of some of the AA women on this site. What worked in the beginning is no longer providing me with as much curl definition and I have quite a few products in my hair care arsenal.

Kurly Kustard products

Eco-Styler w/Olive Oil

Paul Mitchell The Conditioner

Paul Mitchell Express Style Round Trip

Paul Mitchell Express Style Fast Form

Vegetable Glycerin mixed w/ water

These are more for curl definition than moisture; although I'd like it if the product says it'll give you the definition you want that the moisture was an added bonus.

Would love to hear from ANYONE with a testament as to what works for you!

Sable 44 this is tricky because you get different results based on curl/hair type. I used many of the product above and many many more...I became a product junkieKiss! I would recommend you tube..more natural hair care video's than the law should allow.  What look are you seeking? Before I suggest anything knowing what you want to end style to look like will really help. Twist outs are great btw.

    Hello rogam!

Thanks so much for responding! Was beginning to lose hope! I don't have enough hair to perform a twist out. I had my hair 'shaped' up by someone claiming to know what she was doing and she literally scalped me. I've had minimal growth since then particularly on the top. I have been to Youtube which is why you see some of the products listed above and I, too, am a product junkie!

Just looking for curl definition, softness, moisture w/o causing my scalp the itcheez! I tried Miss Jessie's products and scalp itch was a major problem with the product. I just came across Curly Q's Gel-les'c serum and it's been providing me with some definition if not shine.

My hair is coarse and dry although since I've been taking my hair vitamins, the texture is softer so maybe my curl pattern is a bit loose. I'm not sure.

    Any feedback would be appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

When i was trying to grow my hair back. I used the Carol's daughter--Lisa's hair exliar and the koret ahmen(sp?). They advised not to brush or comb but simply shampoo condition and work a small amount into my hair. This worked well. Once the growth started I begin to venture out to other products..I love wash and go's! My fav hair style. The curly girl hair method gives great curl definition--google it. Finally I am currently using the shea moisture collection from Target and it is great. I hope this helps. The big thing is be patient--i know it is hard. Natural hair grows so fast..big picture is that in a few months your hair will totally rock. Let me know if you have any more questions. Take care and be blessed.

Thanks so much rogam! I can admit that patience is not something that I practice well nor is consistency. If one product doesn't work right away ( the way I want it to) I'll immediately go to something else. I have tried Carol's Daughter products but not cosistently. I might just give it another try, particularly the Rosemary Shampoo.

    Grateful to you!

I'm trying to clear out all the chemicals in my hair care arsenal. I like Aubery Organics and I use natural oils.

Kinky curl custard and knot out gives the best curl definition and shine. Go to you tube and  lots of women show you the correct way to use it. Try it I think you all would like it.

I find that I keep returning to Eco Styler gel. I'm liking the Olive Oil type and want to give the Argan Oil Eco Styler gel a try. I took rogam's cue and went back to Target's Shea Moisture brand products; the African Black Soap Shampoo and Purification Masque for hair. I do still mix Jamaicaan Black Castor oil in my shampoo though; just like how my hair feels after I wash it. But that Purification Masque is the business! I also spritz my hair with a vegetable glycerin/ aloe vera juice mix that I concocted. No longer looking for length for I believe the meds won't allow for too much growth; in the meantime I'm rockin' my curls!

Sable43--Good evening! So I am gonna try the jam/black castor oil mixed with shampoo--hmm that sounds nice. I have the Purification masque and have not used it.. I will this week now. Sounds like you have some great home-made recipes. The length will come. My mom had the shortest hair not due to cancer but i grew thick. Let's keep this board active. Do you ever check out the curly nikki forum? It is nice for curly girls

    Hello rogam!

I've got you to thank for re-introducing me to the Shea Moisture line. I found the shampoo to be a little drying but I liked the way my scalp tingled. So I mix Jamaican Black Castor oil, about a nickel size amount in my hand, when I shampoo. I feel like it helps retain some of the moisture, and I also oil my scalp with it about twice a week. Helps with my dry scalp. I hope you like the Purification Masque; my hair feels so soft afterwards. I believe I might have picked up the homemade Aloe Vera Juice/Glycerin mix from YouTube.

I've never heard of curly nikki's forum but will definitely check it out.

Thanks so much for the advice, You were right; consistency is key.

    God bless!

Hello ladies, hope all si well with you. I am new to this forum and would like to join:-) I am 6 weeks since my last chemo, going through radiaiton at the moment. I used the penguin cold caps during chemo so i did not lose my hair. BUT my back hair got a reaction with the burts bee shampoo after my first chemo. Basically, the back hair was stuck together, i mean this is more than tangeld!! i dont even know how i can explain it, but may back hair was mushed together into 2 balls (like knitting balls) and i tried everythign but could not un-mush them, so after 5 hours of agony, i ended up cutting off my back hair. My front hair escapedd the damage:-) it broke a little but was long enough to cover the short back hair. So all through chemo up to now, i have been pulling my hair back into a tuck-in pony tail. I would really love to level all my hair and cut it short, but was waiting til i finsih radiation. So my back hair is all natural and my front hair has growth but the top part is the permed/relaex/colored.

So my question/dilema is this: which are the good hair products to use to promote growth and keep my hair healthy. Currently i use the morrocan argan shampoo & conditioner thats it!What are the good products (shampoo, condtitioner, leave in cond, oil etc) to use on natural hair? my hair texture is medium. I've always had long relaed hair (to my bra strap) this will be the first time with short hair:-) lookign forward to it:-)

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Hello Snoopy73!

I've used Apple Cider Vinegar ( Organic: raw & unfiltered-try Vitamin Shoppe or GNC) mixed with water. 1 cup of ACV mixed with 3-4 cups of water to untangle my hair. The smell doesn't linger so don't worry about that. And I also use Aloe Vera gel on my scalp and black castor oil. I've read where doing both of these things can stimulate growth. My hair has gotten thicker and it even looks darker but not a great deal of length. I've adjusted my expectations; just want my hair and scalp to be healthy and manageable.

Best of luck to you and God bless.

Hi Sable43; Thank you for responding. The thing is my back hair reacted to the shmpoo i used which was the burts bee shampoo and my hair "matted" when i was doing chemo that was way in july, that is why i had to cut my hair at the back. So now my hair is short like 1 inch in lenght at the back and long (covering my head and the back hair) at the front. Therefore, my back short hair is all natural and my front long hair has alot of natural growth and the top ahir is still the relaxed/colored hair. My current style is i pull all my hair back into a ponytial (tuck under). I would love to cut off the relaxed/colored front hair and have all in a the same length. I would like to know what good products to use for natural (medium to fine texture type AA hair) that will stimulate growth and make may ahir healthy and shiny. Thank you.

    Hi Snoopy73!

When I had longer hair, I also tried the Burt's Bees shampoo and it left my then relaxed hair in a tangled mess. Someone had told me about ACV rinses and I still use it from time to time. It really helps to cleanse the scalp; gets rid of buildup and is a good clarifier. If you're looking for growth, I still suggest applying organic aloe vera gel to the scalp; it's been good to me. I also heavily endorse Jamaican black castor oil for growth; particularly since you managed to retain your hair during chemo. Look up the reviews on Amazon or go to youtube. The stuff gets high praise from both the relaxed and natural communities!

    God Bless!

    You're welcome Snoopy73!

Just trying to help. If you purchase ACV I do recommend the Bragg's kind ( with the mother in it) and they sell it at Vitamin Shoppe or GNC or your local health food store. Don't get the kind in the grocery store; not organic. Jamaican Black Castor Oil you may have to order on line but a large bottle runs about $13 bucks and last for a relatively long time; a little goes a long way. I've been able to find it at my local beauty supply store. Other women have stated they got good results from the clear castor oil they've purchased at their local health food store on youtube; but I've seen good results with it in terms of thickness for my hair. My youngest daughter's hair has had tremendous growth using JBCO for the past few months. As for Aloe Vera Gel, I recommend Lily of Desert brand or any organic brand. I read somewhere that some of the store brand aloe vera has formaldehyde in it, so I stay away. I think you'll like the Shea Moisture line; I really like the Purefication Hair Masque--leaves your hair baby soft and I like that tingle I get afterwards.

Again I hope this helps for I'm only relaying the results I've had personally. My hair has been more manageable and I've had better results retaining my short curly style.

Best of luck to you and keep in touch!
