Wheatgrass or Barleygrass to help blood counts normalize?
Hi Folks,
I have been doing a lot of reading lately on benefits of Wheatgrass and Barleygrass and wondered if any of you have been taking either or both of these not just for overall benefits, but specifially to rid your body of the remaining toxins from chemo and radiation. I have persistent low neutrophils and platelet counts and although red blood counts low okay on the surface, apparently my latest labs show that the red blood cells being produced are not healthy. I have a high nucleated red blood count, but not exactly sure what that means... My Oncologist feels there could be some bone marrow damage, perhaps even secondary leukemia and is leaning towards doing a bone marrow study in the next week or so, but I am having a hard time believing secondary leukemia would manifest so soon after completion of chemo and rads ( chemo completed mid Dec 2010, radiation 1st week in March 2011).
I have seen lots of reports that claim daily supplement of Wheatgrass, and or Barleygrass help clean the blood and essentially de-tox the body from the effects of these harsh treatments, so I have started taking 2 doses of Wheatgrass per day ( started yesterday) and also started B-Complex last week. Not sure if I am on a wild goosechase with these two supplements, but I do know that I have lots more energy since starting the B-Complex. Any feedback would be appreciated! I think my body just needs more time to recover from treatments and am not inclined to believe there is something more sinister going on at this time. Hopefully, I am correct!

Hi,
I believe the supplements of Wheatgrass are very ineffective. I was told by Brian Clement of Hippocrates that that is used by basically the pulp of the wheatgrass.
I now take a daily shot of wheatgrass which I have just started doing a week or so ago. Up until then I was taking it in tablet form but they are hard to swallow and I know they are not as effective as most people feel a bit quezy when starting to juice wheatgrass but the supplements had no effect on me at all.

And just if you are taking the B-Complex, make sure that the capsules (if its in that form) are not from a pharmacy as they are more than likely chemical based. Ensure the capsule is fully natural aswell as the coating.

Satex... with your B-Complex take a look at the benefits of folic acid for your current RBC problem... and also review Milk Thistle for clearing out toxins. My RBCs and WBCs were very slow to respond after chemo and rads also.

Will discuss folic acid with my Onc today when I see her. It's comforting to know that others also make a slow recovery in the bone marrow department! Hope you are doing much better with this issue yourself. Did you supplement with anything ( other than perhaps folic acid), or just let things take their natural course? Milk Thistle...will have to check it out as well!

Do either of these have any effect on the liver? The only supplement I know of that affects the liver is milk thistle. It has been used for 2000 years to treat liver disorders. Milk thistle has been reported to have protective effects on the liver and to greatly improve its function. The liver processes your blood. Not an expert at all on the subject of alternative therapy but my doc did say B-Complex is fine but without Vitamin C not helpful. Vitamin C repairs.

I am definitely looking into a good milk thistle supplement to add to everything else I am doing( already taking Vit C so that should be helpful in helping Vit B Complex do its job), once I incorporate milk thistle, I think I will have everything covered! I actually got a little positive news today from my Onc. My blood counts have improved very slightly this last week, red blood cells being produced are more healthy.I am still not producing enough of them, but at least what I am producing are healthy and not immature cells, so that's really good news. I was able to avoid the bone marrow biopsy, yeah! She also told me that given the nature of the improvement ( quality of cells being produced) she is leaning more towards saying that my bone marrow is recovering slowly rather than something more dire. She is also pleased that I am doing all that I can to rid my system of the residual toxins of chemo and radiation and doesn't have any issue with any of the vitamins or supplements I am currently taking.

I started the Wheatgrass then missed a week and am now back on it since yesterday so probably a bit soon to tell. I also eat a lot of Raw Food so my energy levels are usually pretty good anyway.
Are you drinking Wheatgrass?

Yes, I am drinking Wheatgrass. Actually, I am using the Amazing Grass dehydrated product and mixing it with unsweetened almond milk. It tastes pretty good! I just finished my second week and I do think it's helping with my energy levels. I am drinking this around mid morning at work, then when I get home, prior to working out, I am mixing the Amazing Grass Chocolate Green Superfood with the almond milk, this also gives me a nice energy boost. I think I am definitely benefiting from the Wheatgrass and the Green Superfood. I checked with my Onc and she saw no problem with either one, so long as I was not substituting them for an actual meal, which I am not.
Feeling pretty good since I started consuming these supplements so far. Hope you continue to do well on the Wheatgrass. I have also incorporated lots more steamed and raw veggies in my diet and am pretty happy with how these changes are making me feel overall.

Thats great Satex12, you seem to be doing a good bit and every little helps. Do you take any blue green algae? Thats good too and if you can sprout a few seeds, also good but you may be doing this already.
I'm still learning as I go along but am about to take a 9 month course on the benefits of raw food so I'll know better in 9 months.
I take lots of supplements every day too, all the ones i feel necessary anyway and all made with totally natural stuff so I do A LOT of research into these. Time consuming but worth it.
Do you do a lot of juicing? I only do it once a day with the occassional green smoothie thrown in the odd evening.

No, at the moment, I am actually not juicing. I have to say, I am really interested in it though, but just haven't had the time to fully research it. I love veggies and many fruits so I would probably be a great candidate for it. That's next on my list of things to do
. I am taking quite a few vitamins and now with the wheatgrass and superfood smoothie with the almond milk, I am doing more than I ever have in the past and feeling good for it.
