Shoulder and Arm pain??
I am 9+ weeks from my last chemo. I had a right side MX. I now have shoulder and upper arm pain in my LEFT arm. I did have an infected port removed from the left side and because of the pain favored my arm for about 6-8 weeks. It has been several weeks since I healed and have been able to really use my arm. Wouldn't just muscle stiffness and pain subside after a week or so? I can raise my arm straight up with minimal pain, but barely lifting it out to the side hurts all the way down to my fingers. Also, the very top of my shoulder has a tender area. I see a PT twice a week regarding range of motion in my right arm and she has worked on my left too, but it does not feel any better.
So, is this just my arm and shoulder protesting after weeks of limited use or could it be a sign of mets already. I felt a little silly posting this, but I think most of live in fear of every little ache and pain. Any advice please?

Hi TifJ... I don't think my experience with a port is unique... there was a LOT of initial nerve pain related to insertion. Over about a week it dimished, but I was never so glad to see the BS as when she was taking that thing back out. It was a constant irritant - and little stabs of pain etc... all that to say - I think it is more likely that you have some nerve damage there from the port/port infection. Write down all the issues and level of pain you have right now. Then - Why don't you try treating the area with intermittent warm and cold packs - and be rather relentless in doing the exercises your PT is giving you... then reassess in two weeks - is it still there at the same level as what you wrote down... if so - go back to your BS with it... let him/her refer you to a next step if necessary. Gentle hugs to you... as you navigate back into living and let some of the craziness go... it is a long and sometimes very emotional and anxiety producing journey.

Thanks Starbeauty! I really didn't notice the pain until i started using the arm again, but it justs seems to have gone on for awhile. There is some tenderness just to left of the port incision toward my underarm, but no lumpiness. I keep telling myself it is nothing, but can't help think it could be something significant. This is the worst part, in my opinion, of this whole ride. Always being afraid. I see my onc the end of this month for my 3 month follow up. If it hasn't gone away by then I will ask for a scan, x-ray or something!

Tif - I obviously am not an expert, but the tender spot at the top of your shoulder sound similar to something I have. I have had the same spot on my left shoulder for years. Although no doctor has evaluated it, I relate it to neck problems (disk issues). I have been developing the same spot on my right side for the last couple of months, with pain into my upper arm. This is exactly how my mom's neck problems developed, so I have self-diagnosed it as neck issues.
It is nothing concerning enough for me at this point to raise with my onco.
If you have a history of neck problems, it could be related to that.

Hi,
I thought I would let you know about my experience.
I had a port put in (left side) back in 2007, until today I still get pain in my shoulder, and I am sure that it is related.

Thanks for your input ladies. I think I won't get any peace until I have it checked out. Tomorrow I will call the Dr. and ask for an x-tay, scan or something!

Hi, Tiffany:
Caught up with you! Sorry I haven't been in touch for some time; the September 2010 Mastectomy thread dropped off my radar. I'm sending you a P.M.

I've had my port since last July. It is now infected. Went to the ER last night. On antibiotic and pain meds. Tried sleeping without the pain pill and it didn't work. The pain is sharp and constant. In the areas as you described. Collar bone at times depending on how I turn my head, shoulder and down my arm a bit. I'm finished with Chemo, finish radiation this Thursday and will receive herceptin every 3 weeks until mid June (only 4-6 more) so I think I will just have them remove it ASAP. I will see my surgeon tomorrow since this happened over the weekend. I would have kept it in longer if it wouldn't have gotten infected because I will have a few vitamin c injections when I'm done with radiation. I had a PET scan and it showed no cancer anywhere. I think your pain is from the port cuz it sounds exactly like mine. Hope all is well. I'm sure it is.

ssupers-so sorry your dealing with an infected port. Mine started in the catheter up by the incision near my neck. They removed the port 2 days after i found the infection. The big stinker is that because of the infection they won't close up the incision when it is removed. I had to "pack" it every other day with something called "silvercel" until it closed- took about 7 weeks. During that time I didn't use my arm much. My arm pain didn't begin until after my port incision closed up. I had a CT Friday, no results yet, but the nurse at my Drs said if it were something serious (like bone mets) the radiologist would have called my dr. by now. My dr. is out of town for a couple of days and nobody will give me the results! I was on IV antibiotics for 11 days and oral for 12 days. My arm pain may be a pinched nerve or an inflamed bicep tendon according to the dr., but shoot- what do they know!!! HA!!
I certainly hope you get some relief soon. Please keep me posted!

I just saw your post about your port and pain with the shoulder and arm. I have had a similar experience. My port was in for 14 month for chemo and herceptin. After about 13 months I started having pain in my left arm and I found picking things up was painful and moving my elbow around hurt. I was told at first it was tennis elbow but it continued to ache at night. I also had swelling in my left arm and at the port site. I went through an U/S to r/o blood clot and B/S to r/o bone mets. Everything was clean, thank goodness. I was told to get the port out by PT and then they could help me. I also so had issues with the port incision healing, however, after my PT was able to help me get better. At first, my shoulder ROM was not great. My arm was weak too....However, after the port was out and healed the swelling got better...
It has been 3 months later and I am doing much better. Hang in there. I also recommend yoga. I have found the stretching has helped the shoulder and arm.

I think I need to change primary care dr. What a bunch of bufoons!! Last Mon. they scheduled an MRI for shoulder/arm pain- can't have MRI because of magnet in tissue expander. Scheduled CT- took 3 days because they couldn't "seem to get the fax to the right place". Had CT Fri no results until Wed. The CT showed scar tissue from my infected port removal is restricting the blood flow to my arm- nurse said she would schedule ultrasound. She forgot to schedule it. I called this morning- she said she would fax it over. Imaging office called saying they just received a fax for me to have an MRI!!! I almost screamed- I can't have an MRI!- it is supposed to be an ultrasound. Finally, it is now straightened out and have an ultrasound scheduled at 1:30. It has been almost 2 business weeks and I still have no definite answers! Why do we have to fight so hard to get simple things done!!
