I have my first radiation consultation on Thursday and I don't know what it will entail. Should I take someone with me? I don't know what  the 1 1/2 hour appointment is supposed to be about. Do I need an extra pair of ears or should I just go on my own? I don't want to go by myself, but I also don't want to make someone sit alone waiting for me. Any advise?

At my first rads appointment they made my 'mold' that I laid in for the 36 treatments, placed my tattoos, and did a bunch of technical stuff I didn't understand.  That being said, I don't think anyone else would have understood it either :D  I meet my rads team and they explained to me what would happen for the next few weeks.  I went by myself and I am glad I did because like you I didn't want to make anyone wait and that is exactly what they would have been doing.  Good luck, the rads go quickly!! xoxo, Angi

Hardy, if this is your first consultation, that is, you haven't met with the radiation oncologist at all, then this will be the meeting at which she or he makes recommendations about your treatment and talks about the process of radiation. There will probably be a brief physical exam and a health history. At this initial meeting you might also meet a nurse who will tell you about what kind of skin protocols this doctor recommends, or they might leave this for a later appointment. It would certainly be okay to bring a friend, I'd think, they'd only have to step out for the physical exam. I didn't, but I saw other patients at my rads clinic who had friends or family with them at various times. This is the meeting at which you'll get the most amount of information, and also a stage where you need to decide whether you want to do the radiation at all -- so if it's helpful for you to have a second pair of ears/someone you can talk things over with later, that's a good reason to bring someone. If you've already had that meeting, then this planning session will be measurements, tattoos, and so on, and I think anyone who came with you would have to stay in the waiting room.

Thanks! I will find out if this is going to be a molds and tattoo time or talking and physical.
