Hip Mets?
Really quick question - if you have mets to your hip did you have any symptoms? If so what type? My hips are hurting every morning. At first I thought it was where I was sleeping, but it's continued since I changed that.
Any info would be great!

Have you had a ct scan.. or see your Dr? It could be anything.. if you have had this pain for more than 2-3 weeks I would get it checked out...It doesnt say what stage you are..Make an appointment with your Dr.. and take it from there. .Good Luck..Let us know how you are doing

Sorry! I'm 7 years out. I was Stage II, no nodes, ER/HER2 negative. Haven't had a scan of any sort except mammo is over a year.

Yes. In fact, I had intermittent pain in my left hip, on and off, sometimes VERY painful, sometimes just minor to moderate little twinges, for maybe two years PRIOR to my breast beginning to change! Given my age at the time the hip pain started (earlyish/middle-ish 40s) and the fact that the pain was so varied in type and INTERMITTENT in frequency -- it would hurt for anywhere from a day to a week, and then not hurt at all for weeks or months so I'd actually forget about it till it came back -- I attributed it to "old age," which was especially easy to for me because when I would GET this pain (in the morning around get-out-of-bed time), it always made me think of my Pack Rat's father, who had severe pain in one of his hips for YEARS before he ended up getting a hip replacement operation! (and no, cancer was not the cause of his problem)
Anyway, a couple of years after my hip pains started, I was diagnosed with the Stage IV breast cancer -- it was the staging scans found a substantial met in my left iliac bone, which was how and when I found out WHERE that pain in my left hip was really coming from! :-O
My most recent CT/PET scans (November 2010) show my hip met to be "gone," but I still occasionally get the pains in my left hip. I asked my doctor about it and she said even though a bone met can be "gone," there's still damage to the bone itself from the met having been there in the first place, and THAT can occasionally be uncomfortable or painful. OK........well I guess that's what painkillers are for, huh?

Hi there,
I just such searched hip pain and this thread came up. I am literally crying right now with my hip pain
I had no nodes in my June Diep Surgery, finally getting healing from the stage 2b revision, and for some time I had bone on bone in my knees, looking at replacement last year, but found the BC. I know my exercise level took a major dive last year with having five surgeries. Since the PET was negative a year ago....I assumed I was cured now that I have had a BMX due to BRACA 1. Do you think a bone scan shows more than a PET? I do not want to take pain meds
Advice? obviously I will go back and see the Oncologist who had one conversation with me and basically told me I was fine since the cancer so small and I was lucky. Last night I was at an old friends house and she facebooked me and saw a picture of my husband and i from only five years ago. Her response: this looks nothing like you! I am so depressed right now, but mostly in pain! Thanks for reading.

Oh hon take a breath. Remember that hip pain be anything. Search this site more and you'll see bunches of stories where it was something else. (((((Hugs)))))

Are you on an AI? My hips hurt a little each morning when I get up. As soon as I walk a few steps I feel fine. I just asked my onc. the other day and she said it is the Femara I'm on.
-
No, thanks for asking. I was told I didn't need it. I had my ovaries out just prior to the Dx . I have been told I havd the bones of a 60 year old and my doc just gave me pain meds a year before my dx. I need knee replacements and then my hips start hurting this year ....such a bummer. I never had a bone scan but the PET was negative. I made an appt with a personal trainer to start an exercise program suitable to my level and build the muscles and hopefully it will help.

MRDRN, have you had your hips x-rayed?
Given the fact that your knees are bone on bone, it seems to me you could also have osteoarthritis in your hips. I have had a total hip replacement - when I look at sites about joint replacement it seems to me there are a fair number of people who have OA in both the knee and hips.
-
What is the treatment then?
-
MRDRN, if you have osteoarthritis affecting your hip joints, you could look at total hip replacements, if you can't manage the pain with medication. Talk to your onc, but I would also see s orthopedic surgeon.
When I was researching hip replacements, one of my PT friends told me it is one of the most successful operations. Based on the results I got, I tend to agree.

The likihood of getting both knees and hips replaced is next to none, but I saw a Pain Specialist last week. She was very compassionate and informative. She really took her time with me. I felt so glad after seeing her and walked out with MRI/Xray orders and three pain meds. I felt so much better in three days, and went away as my father passed away and didn't take the one med., and pain returned. This is so depressing for me as I was very active a few years ago. I am putting Lidocaine patches on my hips for 12 hrs a day with good relief. They were pretty expensive but it it helps me sleep better, it is worth it. The most important thing she said was that I should follow up with the onc. She was surprised I wasn't being followed, even though I was stage 1. THEN she told me about her being stage 0 and is followed regularly every three months! Thanks ladies...just goes to show that when we see some docs, they can 'relate' sometimes, ya know?

My t-marker number started rising so I had a PET/CT scan that showed a met to my iliac crest - about 1". I did have pain in that area for a month or so before the scan but never imagined it would be from cancer - it was. I no longer take Tamoxifen but instead get monthly injections of Lupron and take Femara daily - I have noticed aches in my bones now that I believe are from Femera. Next scan will be in a month or so and I'm crossing my fingers for NED (no evidence of disease).

That is good information sofr8fl....thanks for sharing
I had a nuclear bone scan yesterday and if anything, that and the dexi will be a baseline to compare if I ever need them again.
Keep on truckin, let us know if you find out anything ...good luck

SoGr8fl good info, hope all has gone well for everyone who has posted here.
I am a runner and things have been going great. Had a PR in the 1/2 marathon in March. Then about 3 weeks ago started getting pain after running, walking, mowing in left iliac crest. I am a coach and it doesn't appear muscular. It also wakes me up at night....after reading here will call the doc tomorrow to rule out mets, but had chemo so thought I should be ok....better check?
-
Sharon, just read your post. Am a runner also - started feeling severe groin pain in Feb 2011. Thought I had pulled some muscle or tendon but it did not improve. Saw my oncologist and started the round - x-ray, scan - they showed fractures in the pelvis and hip joint. On to an MRI - it was either stress fractures from running and osteoporosis (caused by early menopause from BC treatments starting at 38 - or bone mets. Preliminary results show the former (stress fractures). Am seeing the DR on Monday. So my message is: could be serious (but healable) or very serious.... Have it checked out. Chemo does not prvent recurrences in all cases. Good luck!
