This is a what if question.

My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with mono today.  I have a call into the oncologist office but it is 5 and I haven't herd back from them. If I have or get mono, will it make my LE worse?  Anything I should do while we wait and see?  I know I have been exposed because I ate after her and she has been sneezing all over me.  We thought she had a sinus infection.  So thankful for a good Dr.  She did the mono test on a hunch since she hadn't gotten better in two weeks of meds.

Thanks

    Kitty,

The odds are very, very high that you're immune to mono. When you do the blood tests--serology--most adults have had it, even if they don't remember a bad sore throat and feeling tired for 6 weeks.

You can get the test for it and the serology as well.

It's spread by saliva--hence "the kissing disease"--so unless you shared drinks, it is relatively hard to spread.

You should get checked out, but I think you'll be fine. I hope she's on the road to recovery soon.

Thanks Kira.  Her Ped's Dr. was so worried about me. She had me scarred.  She actually told me to go home and call my Dr. right away.  That her antibiotics could be picked up tonight on Dad's way home from work.

Never had mono to my knowledge.  I was a very healthy child.  lol  So much for staying that way. And yes we did share a drink by accident.   Durn chemo brain.   Makes me think maybe I should start putting our names on our drinks when we have the same thing.  yuck.

Kitty, Mono is a virus, so antibiotics are only useful when there's strep throat on top of the viral sore throat--and with mono, you tend to get a rash on amoxicillin, due to the virus.

It's a version of the Epstein Barr virus.

Here's the Mayo Clinic info on it

I'm sure you daughter's doctor is concerned about you, and you should tell your onc, but overall, I wouldn't worry.

LOL  I read that site earlier.  She is on antibiotics for the sinus infection.  Today was the last day of zithromax.  She is still so congested that she decided to play it safe and do a round of omnicef just encase her body had built up a tolerance to the other one.   She did say if it was the virus causing it, we wouldn't see any improvement in her congestion.  We go back in two weeks for a recheck.

I am not worrying but that is so hard when you are so exhausted.  lol  Did I mention I have a hyper child...try keeping her still for the next month.  She is ADHD and we had just started her meds. Sat.  Dr. is making us stop them for now, since we want know whether she is getting better or worse.

    Still appreciate all the help.

Kitty, if you should get mono you'll be tired, so you might want to think how you'll manage arm care when you're not up to snuff.Tongue out When you're lying down keep your arm elevated. Stay really well hydrated. Do some deep breathing. From time to time do some slow and gentle over-your-head fist clenches. Wrap or use night garments in preference to day garments when possible (they help move the fluid rather than just contain it). Mono is a (literal!) drag, but there are still ways to adjust your self-care routine to avoid aggravation, so don't fret on that score.

Prayers for a "miss" on this one!Kiss Hope your daughter is the sort that "goes to ground" when she's sick -- my hyper son is, so it does provide some peace, at least. Undecided Keep us posted!
    Be WELL!

Kitty, how are you doing?  Just reading this and wondering if you escaped mono.

I had it several years ago while I was in night school.  My fellow Intermediate Acc. student thoughtfully gave me mono. and then dropped the class.  I drug my tired a$$ around for 4 weeks cussing her the whole time.  I missed 1/2 a day of work, and no classes, and was taking 3 night classes, but it nearly killed me.  I hope you miss it.

I haven't herd back from the oncologists office still.  I am tired but in all honesty I think that is still part of the recouping from what we have been through in the last 13 months.

Thankfully my DD is calmer today.  I didn't get her to sleep till almost midnight last night.  She doesn't seem to have temp so far today but she has a puffy face.  I slept little last night thanks to the SE of the Famara.  Frankly I think somebody should just come along and put a cooling system in our beds or a blanket for us.  lol  Thanks for asking.
