Soar red breast

Options

Hi all, I am 56 and had breast cancer in the summer of 2004. I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation. Yesterday afternoon, Friday end of a full day of work I was so tired so I left a bit early. I stopped at the grocery store and was reaching for an item up high and realized my breast was soooo sore. When I got home I looked at it and it was red from above the nipple all the way to under the breast the whole lower half. It felt taught and extremely sore. I also felt a bit feverish although when I checked there was no fever. Now I have to wait until Monday to go the the doctor and I am worried about a recurrence of the cancer. Anyone have anything experience with symptoms like this? I am also postmenopausal. I am no longer on arimdex as of last September.

mh, I haven't had your symptoms, but I thought I'd stop and bump your thread (which seems to have slipped through the cracks a bit), in the hopes that someone else can comment.

I'm sure the pain and redness could be caused by several things, including some sort of infection.  But it absolutely sounds like something that needs to be checked out ASAP -- if mostly for your peace of mind.

I'm glad you've found BCO!  Please let us know what you find out on Monday.    Deanna

mhdunn - I am very sorry to hear about this, I was thinking infection, but you do not have a fever. Google your history and your symptoms and see if you get any response.  There are many wondeerful sites.  when I need information, I usually google, that is how I found this thread.

I will keep in touch with you, to see what your doctor said.  When was your last check-up. For a recurrence you would feel a lump, did you feel any.

    Wishing you all the best.

The immediate concern is the possibility of cellulitis, especially if you had a lot of lymph nodes removed or have lymphedema.  Take a marker and draw a line along the outside border of the red area.  Also, take your temperature.  As tempting as it is to wait until Monday, if the red area spreads, you develop a fever, or you start to feel sick (flu-ish), you need to seek medical attention immediately.  KS

I agree with KS, my first concern would be is it cellulitus.  I had a bout with it over the summer & the doctors I saw never even suggested this.  I had IBC which can present with a rash but this looked much different.  I ended up in the hospital for 3 days with it, cellulitus, having iv antibiotics. It tooks months for it to cell completely. If you start to run a fever, I would go to urgent care or the ER.  NJ

mhdunn, how in the world are you?!Frown Hoping you didn't wait for Monday to get help and now have everything under control. Cellulitis comes on quick like that, causes tiredness, tightness and pain, and may or may not register any fever initially -- so I'm worried 'bout ya'!

    Hoping all's well,
    Binney
