Did you know all our comments are on the Internet?

On another thread, someone alluded to the fact that if you google your password name your postings on this board will come up. I googled my name "amontro" and a whole thread came up where I poured my heart out with personal matters. Included were the responses from all of you.
I am mortified. I thought that what we wrote here would be in confidence with each other and not to be googled and pried and maybe even laughed at.
Do any of you have a problem with that?

Nothing you post on the internet is really 'private'. And this site has to be open enough for new breast cancer patients to find it so it really can't be locked down.
So ... it pays to be aware of that and careful about what you say.
However, nobody is really likely to Google amontro unless they are looking for you specifically ... and know your screen name. Strangers who did just stumble across it have no idea who you really are.
If family/friends do know your screen name you might want to check your posts and see if you need to do some editing. Or change your screen name and not share it.
Not a perfect situation but it is a workable one.
I think it's good that you put this post out here ... it's a reminder to everyone.

This is a known fact. This community is not a "closed" one, accessible only by members. Anyone can read any posts. The only thing a non-member cannot see is your profile. The reasoning behind it is that people who are looking for information would find this place very easily.
-
-
That's why it is best to chose a screen name that isn't your real name and is also common. You google lago and you get restaurant, lakes and other Italian stuff etc.
-
Yes -- it's clearly stated in the community rules information that not only is this public content, but anything posted on the board can be used by bc.org. To wit:
"By using the Discussion Boards or Chat Rooms, you are granting Breastcancer.org a perpetual, exclusive, royalty-free and irrevocable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, create derivative works from, transfer, and sell any such messages, files or communications."
Like I said, it's clearly stated in the rules, but I understand your shock if you didn't know that and/or didn't read them (and let's face it, it's easy not to, or to skim them, or to be so overwhelmed by a new dx that none of it sinks in anyway).
Good reminder to everyone about the lack of privacy on the internet.

Oh wow! I need to change my screen name. Do I have to start a new account???
-
Darlene .. you can change your screen name w/o changing your account.
Bren
-
No, you just go to your account and edit.
-
Darlene ... When you're logged in .. go to my preferences and at the very top next to your log on ID, there is an edit key. Hit the edit key to change your log on ID.

If you edit or delete your posts or change your ID, that still doesn't change what's already on Google. It's there to stay.
-
Thanks everyone. Now when they google they will find my favorite pancake place.
-
IHOP is such a cute name ... it's making me hungry!!

I had forgotten about this
and tks
for reminding me

yeah, it's important to post under an alias. I just googled my full name; thankfully, since I post under an alias, not too much came up. As WhiteRabbit indicates, not too many people are likely to google your alias, unless they specifically know it.

I am mortified. It is one thing for bc.org to use our information to help breast cancer patients, it is another thing to have the site wide open for googling. What can bc.org possibly gain by making the site so open.... Arghhh
-
I personally have no problem with the bc.org being public. I have nothing to hide, and I am pretty much known in the local community. There's not much that can scare me (except for BC, of course, lol) - maybe due to all the life experiences I had.
Oh yes, and did I mention that my neighbors call me "that crazy lil' lady with them big ole guns"? that came up after I had chased a couple of Jehova witnesses across the front lawn with a rifle - they didn't seem to want to take no for an answer.
Jokes aside (even if the paragraph above was NOT a joke lol), most of the ladies here do have a lot of concerns about their privacy. So yes, be careful. Do not use a username that has anything to do with your real life name or location. Do not post your town/city in your profile - you might use just your state. Or in your posts, reference about your life. Unless you don't mind it all being public.

JBinOK, I think maybe Mandy is referring to this:
"By using the Discussion Boards or Chat Rooms, you are granting Breastcancer.org a perpetual, exclusive, royalty-free and irrevocable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, create derivative works from, transfer, and sell any such messages, files or communications."
I don't know that BCO has ever done any of this, but according to their rules, they could,
-
I always knew information posted here was open to anyone who stumbled across this site but I was curious what would happen if I googled my alias...nothing associated with with this sight came up! Apparently there is a company in New Zeland that stole my name!!??
-
Bwahahaha, o2bhealthy, you need to sue them for copyright infringement!
-
I know!!! Who do they think they are snagging my name! I was wondering how hard that would be to sue for copyright infringement since we are on different continents...maybe I'll have to take trip to NZ and spy on them first
-
Oh yes, go to NZ to spy. And extend the spying for as long as possible. I think it's the most beautiful place on this planet!
-
That was really good to know - I changed my ID since I just joined, it will keep me private.
Its great to have support like this , but it should be up to us what we share , and with who :-)
-
Crap. That is my real name. Why do we have to bother signing in? This is insane.
-
Double crap. Just went in to see some of the more busy forums. Google Konakat and you will get Free Konakat from the Time Out Room. You can stumble across it very easily. The whole free for all is available on the internet depending on whom you Google and yes you have to sign in to post but anybody can see your alias.

Ladies
Also make sure that your profile does not show your email address against the heading Home Page URL. I made that mistake when I first registered then quickly deleted it. I noticed that some people have their email address showing there. (I think that heading relates to internet pages you may have).
