Cancelled MRI Guided Biopsy

I had a screening MRI because I am at high risk for breast cancer. My sister died from a very agressive breast cancer at 36. The MRI showed a 1 cm lesion in my right breast.  I had an ultrasound done to rule out a false positive.  The radiologist found the lesion and requested a ultrasound guided biopsy. This biospy was cancelled by another radiologist because he did not feel comfortable doing a biopsy on such a small lesion. He requested a MRI guided biopsy.  This biopsy was also cancelled because a third radiologist could not find the lesion. Now my GYN is sending me to a breast surgeon for another opinion because she does not want me to wait 6 months for another MRI. Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be possible that both the radiologists misread the ultrasounds and the lesion is not there afterall?

Well, my situation was not exactly like yours-I had a mammogram with 'suspicious calcifications', and was sent for an ultrasound.  The ultrasound radiologist #1 scheduled me for an ultrasound biopsy.  When I went for that, ultrasound radiologist #2 couldn't find the lesion, so couldn't biopsy.  Ultrasound radiologist #2 asked for a stereotactic (mammogram guided) biopsy, which was successful.

So radiologists and doctors can definitely disagree; some finding a lesion and some not.  I think its good your GYN is sending you to a breast surgeon. Yes, both the ultrasound radiologists could be wrong.  I think its good she is sending you to a breast surgeon to evaluate.

Anything is possible but not likely.I think the first radiologist has it right. If it's so small then it does need to be done with the assistance of either an mri or ultrasound. Could it have been a cyst that resolved??Maybe. The surgeon needs to know where to go so he'd likely need guide wires to aide him. He's not going to blindly open up your breasts. You just may end up having to wait 6 months for another mri.If it were me i'd go back to the first radiologist and ask him to do the biopsy. Let me know how you make out after seeing the  surgeon.

@ trasmi, I feel for you so much. I'm BRCA1+, like my 2 sisters.  They found a lesion/irregular nodule from a mammo & MRI a week ago, told me I was going for a biopsy and u/s, then told me the day before it was u/s for sure. Had the u/s, they said they had issues locating the precise location of the lesion, so did not do a biopsy, now they are sending me for an MRI-guided biopsy, but told me that they may not even do a biopsy.  I find that odd given our family history. The advice I've rec'd from others is definitely to get another opinion if need be, and to push, push, push them to do something.  Hope all turns out well for you.
