expander to come out

Found out today from my plastic surgeon that my expander has to be removed due to capsular contrature.  No implant can be placed in.  I was sad and now relieved.  I wasn't looking forward to more surgery and the expander was killing me for months. Monday it will be removed and I guess it's time to look for a prosthetic bra, any advice

thanks

isabel

Ishobie, thinking of you as you go through this additional trauma.  Please check breastfree.org, which was established by our sister Barbara (screen name Erica) for just this kind of information.  She has all kinds of information on bras and forms and others have written their impressions of all these items.  You'll get more good info there, then come back here to see if you can get comments on specific bras and forms that you are considering.  It will be your most efficient way of getting the information you deserve and desire.

That's a great site. Also, some hospitals - especially larger ones with cancer centers - have "boutiques" that cater to cancer patients. They will usually have people trained to fit prostheses and carry a variety of them and also bras.  I've also found Nordstrom to be a good place to shop as they will sew pockets free of charge into any bras you buy there.

Isabel, I'm sorry you have to go through this.  I had to have my right implant removed(I still have the left), but it's been a little over two years and I'm doing fine. I feel well and happy and despite having only one "breast" I am as satisfied with my body as I suppose most 50+ women are :) There are many of us here with failed recon who are doing great.  Best of luck with everything. Breastfree.org is a great resource and I highly recommend it as well!

    Hugs,

    Angela

I really am okay with it. I feel so much better since the expander is out, it was so annoying and painful. I have a great prosthetic bra and will get some camisoles etc. I think I will be fine, I was just shocked at first. As long as I stay healthy and cancer free, not much get can to me ..

    thanks

    • Bii lateral mastectomy 1/12/10 .. tissue expander's placed.  Bi weekly fills @120 cc each breast.  Good times, NOT ..!  Pain with each fill up .. just want to get it over with... went on vacation to  Grand Canyon in April 2010, ended up with staph infection .. hospitalized 5 days, emergency surgery to remove right TE.  I walked around with 1 TE for several months.  TE replaced several months later.   I opted for larger button up shirts .. nothing form fitting, with a matching tank top ..

My heart goes out to you, prayers and strength to you as well.

Hi, Ishobie.....I had BMX and recon w/TE's 6 weeks ago. Have had one fill. Will start chemo this coming week. I was wondering how the encapsulation was detected? I was told that the TE's are hard, not soft and pliable. And that is how I feel. I have no pain but they are definitely NOT comfortable. Is there some sign I should be looking for to detect encapsulation? I am so afraid of facing yet more stuff. This has not been an easy time, as we all know here. Any info is appreciated. And I am so sorry you had to go through this on top of everything else.

Hi Ana M-you know mine were always very hard and very uncomfortable. The last few months however it seemed the skin near my incision felt thinner and i could almost feel the expander right there pressing up against it.  After the first and last fill it stayed full and i could wear a camisole and it looked like the other breast (actually fuller and firmer) but the last two months, it seemed to deflate (if that's the right word) and the skin sort of folded in.  I could really feel the expanders almost moving around, yicch.. very uncomfortable. As soon as my PS saw it he said oh no this isn't going to work. I was so glad to get them out.  I don't know how common it is, never heard anyone else that I know mentioning scar tissue.

good luck with your chemo, remember when it's over -----you will be fine.  message me if you need anything or some support during the chemo.

Isabel, thank you for your reply. My chest looks so weird I have no idea how other ladies looked. But the PS has examined me twice post-surgery and he said all was going well so I guess I look "normal". I still cannot have a good night's sleep, though, because these things are so hard, and I used to sleep on my right side before surgery and now I cannot do that...I use lots of pillows now to wedge myself and that is what works best. I hope that after all I have been through since December, I can get some relief in the near future. Not counting chemo, of course !!  Thank you for your words. We really do draw strength from our fellow sisters..Ana Maria

Yeah it really does look weird, it is not normal looking. Foot in mouthI didn't even wanna look at myself for a long time. As long a you keep up the PS visits, it is fine. I didn't go for months because I was so sick from my chemo cocktail, well I should have gone more often.  I used to sleep on my right side too and its only now that they are out, that i can again.  A lot changes for us during this process, things we took for granted b4.  As long as we come out healthy on the other hand, it is just stuff we have to deal with. I never thought I could get through this and I have and as a much stronger woman. You will be fine.   Take care and my thoughts are with u.

ishobie, my PS mentioned after my exchange surgery that he had to remove some scar tissue that had formed around the expanders. I had the most incredibly painful expansion process. I never thought about it being because of scarring; I was just told it was because of the pressure. Most of the other ladies thought their exchange surgery was a breeze, but mine was almost as painful as the first one. I now have capsular contracture of my right implant and beginnings of it on my left. I am having my implants removed but not replaced since I have researched and learned that there is a high risk for recurrence of CC with new implants once you've already had it. I guess I'm just prone to it. Wish I had never gone through the expansion/implant process. It's been nothing but misery for me. I guess certain people don't do well with foreign things in their body. Cannot wait until my surgery on Apr 5.

HI Tina, I remember reading something recently bout implants and cancer.  I tell you I never felt better than now. Getting out that stupid expander was a huge relief . I was in pain and uncomfortable for months and I thought it was normal. I may not have a breast but at least I feel somewhat normal. The prosthetic bra is fine for me -my PS wants to know if I want to do another type of surgery. At this point, NO, I need my body to heal and just be, no more surgeries. I agree that some people do well and others don't. You will feel so much better. I am kinna glad I never made it to the implant stage and then have to take them out.

    Hope the surgery goes well

    Isabel
