What now??

Hi, all. It's been awhile since I have posted. I have a history of benign lumps (one removed), bloody nipple discharge, MRIs, mega Ultrasounds and mammos, large cysts, etc. Today I have (came on very quickly) a red, swollen, hot and very painful breast. I have had mastitis once (with a lump) before, when I was pregnant. (I am 48, have had 4, and my youngest is now 10 yrs old.) There is no lump with this issue. I have some weird "dotted" skin in the redness, and some thicker skin around my nipple in the same area. I am calling my GYN tomorrow. Does this sound like IBC? Especially, considering that I have a 18 yr history with breast "problems"? Also, maybe I should mention that I did have a high C- reative protein a month ago. That's a blood test showing some inflamation in my body, along with a positive ANA (usually autoimmune). Thanks for any information or insight!

EDIT: I should probably add that I have a 1.7 CM solid mass on my thyroid (and, a 4mm mass on the other side of it) to be BX next week. May or may not be connected. I don't know because I know so little about either one! :P~

The breast symptoms you described do occur with IBC and you do not have to have a lump to have IBC.  You certainly should have this checked out as soon as possible. Hopefully it is not IBC, but on the small chance that it is, time is critical. Hoping and praying that you have good results with all your tests.

    Hugs,

Cat,  Your symptoms sound similiar to mine.  I had to wait 3 weeks just to see an obgyn.  I had a mammo & ultrasound the following week and the ball started rolling from there.  Please report back to us.  I pray this is just an infection, but should be checked out asap.

Thank you for replying. I did call my DR and they are talking with him about this. His mother died about 8 yrs ago after BC, so he doesn't waste time. Today, it continues to itch, which is a symptom that I left out, and the whole bottom side feels kind of hard, Like I have a large water balloon inside?? it feels "heavy". I hope to hear from the OB/GYN soon.

The DR's office called. Nurse said it sounds like a breast infection, calling in an antibiotic, and "will ask the Dr if he wants to do anything else"..not sure what that meant, so I guess I will see if the med works....

I strongly agree the other ladies.  See a breast surgeon who is familiar with IBC.  You have all the symptons I had.  I have IBC stage IIIB and am a 7 year survivor.  Early detection can save your life.  Best wishes.    Marylouise

Momcat, my family Dr told me it was mastitis and put me on an antibiotic.  It wasn't and of course the pill did nothing for my problem.  I hope they find an answer for you soon.  Marylouise

Well, I started the penicillin type antibioctic last night. Before bed though I noticed some decrease in pain, still a 3 X 3 or so patch of pink around my areola. IN that patch of pinkness there is an area about 2X2 that looks and feels a bit thicker, and I had my husband look...lol..so I would think I wasn't seeing things...and he noted the more pronounced poors, etc. I do have a question...would a woman, or DR, FEEL a thicker area, or is that just some thing that shows up on an MRI, ultrasound, etc? And, why are the poors of my skin a little bit more pronounced in that thicker, pink area?

I got the rash about 4" in diameter that came up over night.  It had the peau d'orange, skin looks like an orange rind.  I had itching for a couple of weeks.  I did have one go round with antibiotic, but it didn't help.  So I was reffered to a breast special.   Thankfully she didn't give up easily and found the cancer that was causing the rash.  Thank God, because I am now a 3 year survivor & 2 years NED. IBC can present itself different in different women.  So I would get it checked out with a breas specialist. nj

Thank you, Nj. I have taken the penicillin type drug since Tuesday evening. The pinkness is just about gone. I still feel some thicker skin around the areola when the pink was/is. It isn't quite as sore, still feels warmer on the arm-side of the breast. The nipple area still itches. This itchiness has been here longer than the pink, pain, etc. When I stop the antibiotics and the itchiness continues should I call the doctor? I'm sorry if I sound so "stupid". I just don't know what could be causing the itch, or if that is even a concern.ALSO, what is so bothersome is the frequent "let-down" feeling"! Driving me nuts. I haven't breastfed in 10 yrs.

Well, I have been on antibiotics for a tooth that needs a root canal, and the pinkness in teh same spot came back, still itches, and the skin gets think. "Gets' think meaning, sometimes it doesn't look AS thick. Weird. Anyway, I guess I had better talk to my GYN. Is this like IBC?

    Hi Momcat,

I'm just going to jump right in here. Your story so far sounds a bit like what I've been through these past 2 months.

My right breast became red and swollen, I got the run around for a bit but finally saw a specialist and basically what they did for me was to give me antibiotics (all told on was on them for about a month, including a week of I.V. antibiotics) and at the same time get me ready for a biopsy.

I write this not to freak you out, but to encourage you to be vigilant about your symptoms...

Are they not following up with your course of antibiotics to see how it went? In my case they were checking each week and then making decisions.

For me they were hesistant to biopsy incase it was infected.... but really, although it seemed for awhile that the anitbiotics were helping---i.e. that it might just be an infection---in the end even the I.V. antibiotics didn't get rid of the redness.

For me the biopsy ended up coming back this past Monday as positive for bc.

I am only just learning about this stuff... but honestly, in my case I could have easily wasted time if I had listened to the first doctor I saw who said it was just an infection.

Luckily I found a second doctor who got me a referrral to a breast oncology specialist...

I don't want give you medical advice or sound pushy but... really, it's important to have someone who is a specialist take a look at this, don't just let it go.

This website might be helpful to you: http://www.eraseibc.org/videos.html

And this quote, that I've seen on an IBC list that I find very poignant:

"Any cellulitis of the breast that occurs in a non-gravid (not pregnant),
non-lactating (not breastfeeding), woman should be assumed to be
inflammatory breast cancer until biopsy proves otherwise." Robert W.
Carlson, MD, Stanford University; Chair, NCCN Breast Cancer Treatment
    Guidelines.

Best of luck to you. Let us know how it goes.

    Hi, Tundra...

I just returned to the board today, and saw your post. Great site! The viedo was informative. :)

I have yet another infection, I guess. It just kind of popped up. I noticed some tenderness today, and now the same area of redness. EXACT area.  I will call myGYN on Monday.

Well, today it is still very tender. The area of redness is to one side (touching) the areola, and about 3 inches in diameter. The breast doesn't feel as hard as it did the other infection, but my underarm near the breast is very tender, and my breast feels heavy.

Thanks, Bonnie. I plan on calling someone tomorrow. The last one I had (as you read)..the nurse said it sounded like an infection, treated it over the phone. I have been reading about Paget's. The nipple is red, and the area of redness on the breast next to the nipple is larger, maybe 4 inches now.  I can't seem to find what I need..may be typing in too many words! My breast doesn't feel overly "hot" to the touch, but like stingy (and, the nipple)...does that make sense?? Like it's irritated.

Are you being followed by a breast specialist? (typically breast surgeon)  If so, it would be good to contact them immediately and explain your symptoms.  While it is reasonable to do a 7 day course of antibiotics, since it might be an infection, you should be seen so the Dr. can evaluate your symptoms.  How are you feeling otherwise?  Any fever?  Is the breast enlarged?  If the symptoms respond to antibiotics....no need to worry, it is likely an infection.  If not, it's time to push for a punch biopsy to get to the bottom of things.  Hoping this goes away and it proves to be nothing.

    HI, RN,

I have no fever (98.7). The breast is always a bit larger (the norm), but is  a little firmer, swollen than usual. The reddish area is about 4 inches in diameter and one 1/3 or so touches the areola. In that area, a small part of the areola is thicker on the redness side, almost like wrinkly chicken skin. TMI??LOL Achy, and hurts to touch under the nipple, with the nipple being red, itchy, and slightly inverted. It's  my perkier nipple..lol..the other side, which is fine, has been inverted off and on since I was a teen. Also, the edge of my breast almost under my arm is very tender.

Momcat1962 Don't delay take the good advice above and see a specialist as  God_is_good (Bonnie) suggested.  She is right, with IBC time matters.

If it is IBC, you have these wonderful ladies here to help you thru!  (And many wonderful women who have other forms of breast cancer.)

Call on Monday and let us know, keep us updated!  We want to know........

    Wishing you the very best!

    Susie

Mastits symptoms without a fever definitely warrant an evaluation by a breast surgeon and probably a biopsy.  Best of luck to you.

Sorry to hear you are having more problems similar to the first.  Underarm tenderness was another symptom I had, which was inflammed lymph nodes. I had 5 positive nodes.  I would definitely want to go see a breast specialist.  Hoping you can get some answers.  NJ

Hey, all..another question...I went to bed with a very achy breast. I got up (not much sleep, and breast less tender, but still some tenderness), and my breast is still a bit swollen, the pinkness is still there. My areola is a bit "puffy", and I now feel the area of the areola that is a bit thicker near the reddish spot is scaly, dry feeling. Maybe about the size of  a nickle or more. My question: Would a patch of pinkness that I have been describing and the tenderness of the breast and under arm be a sign of Paget's as well?? Just curious...Thank you for you support, everyone...I am calling the Dr. today but want your opinions, too...from experiences and research...

    XOXO

Thank you, Bonnie, for the great info! :) YES! I called and the same nurse that RX'd the med last November for  the breast infection said it sounded" strange"...lol...Whether a good strange, or bad, who knows. Tongue out And, since I have no fever, etc...she told me to make an appt. I did and am going in tomorrow morning. I'll update tomorrow. Thanks again so much, Bonnie...Smile
