What do you use in place of antiperspirant
Help please.... starting radiaiton tomorrow and need to find something to use in place of my anitperspirant. I have been using clinical strength anti perspirant in the past. Seems like as I got older I needed something stonger or my arm pits were really stinky. I have tried Tom's brand but I still think I smell an odor. The nurse said to check out Whole Foods and that anything with the pink ribbon was good. I found Crystal body deodorant that says no aluminum chlorohydrate but listed in ingredients is ammonium alum. How is this safe then?? Is this just a good advertising ploy, "NO aluminum chlorohydrate but they hope we dont read the rest of the ingredients. I'm going to bring it in to ask tomorow. But I wondered if anyone used this and if it was safe. My daughter says...Mom you'll just be stinky for 6 weeks. LOL

I used Tom's which I can see you tried also, but I wanted to tell you that after a couple of weeks of rads, it was almost as if my sweat glands on my rads side were dried up, and I didn't feel the need to use anything. I continued to use my regular anti-perspirant on my non rads side.

I too used Toms. I agree it is not great - I always had a bit of odor by the end of the day. I loved the lemongrass scent though. I wish they made it in a stronger deoderant.

someone mentioned Tea Tree Oil works well so I actually use a Tea Tree Oil soap in the shower on a sponge and then i use tea tree oil facial cleansing cloths (you can get both at Trader Joes) and it works wonders (I rub the cleansing cloths under my arms and not on the face - too strong for the face in my opinion!)
i think i found my magic solution!

My radiation team told me to only use corn starch, but I wanted a little more protection against odor. So after checking around, I found out about a non-metallic deodorant called Alra (I found it at a Home Medical Supply shop). It was formulated for use during radiation therapy and approved by the radiation oncologist. However, as Mary said above, it wasn't long before I stopped sweating under that arm. You can also use Alra when you go for a mammogram. Wishing you the best!

Thanks all. I am heading in and will post later when I hear about the crystal brand..It does habe the pink ribbon on it.
It would be a nice perk if after a while I stop sweating in at least one arm pit. Hmm maybe something postitive!!

I hated the Crystal stuff. I will second it that once you get into Rads the sweating goes away. I had my chemo during the summer and got away with corn starch.

I too am using the Crystal stuff with the pink ribbon on it. Since it's so cold where we are, it seems to do the job for now.

Hi, I was diagnosed August 2010. After the surgery I had to have radiation also. I also have to use a stronger deodorant, or I can't stand myself. I found a deodorant called Herbal Clear PG free. It has no aluminum, dyes or alcohol, but it does have aloe fresh deodorant with aloe and rosemary lemon, at least that's what it says on the label.
It worked for me, but I had to refresh with it at least twice a day. My radation treatments, took place in the afternoons, and I went from work, so I would freshen up prior to going to get my treatment.
Hopes this helps!

I had my rads in July and August so it was hot. I didn't use anything on the rads side and I didn't have a problem with odor (yes there was mild odor but when I asked family if I was offensive smelling they said they couldn't smell anything when close to me.) Everyone is differernt so you may have to just see how it goes for you. Good luck!

I've used Tom's of Maine for years. It works well enough for me as long as I re-apply it halfway through the day!

I used essential oil products safe for the skin. I used calendula cream which had a very nice scent to it
Maybe you can apply a mild baking soda mix? I use 1tsp in 1 cup water to rinse after my shower, and it's soothing. It may help with odor??
