shingles--not the roof kind

Anybody had experience with shingles? I have them on the bottom of my left foot which is covered with small blisters and has shooting pains going through the nerve endings. Such a weird place to get them. My PCP says don't walk on my foot for 5 days. I didn't realize until now how great my feeling in my foot is--I thought they were half dead with neuropathy from taxotere, but my left foot is feeling the pain just great. BC treatment just keeps on giving in new surprising ways.

Does anybody know of anything that works? I have heard if you are a bc survivors you shouldn't get the herpes zoster (shingles) vaccine.

    Hey, Weesa,

I had shingles around 8 years ago...totally non-cancer related. I see that you've seen your doctor, which is good, because you can minimize the duration/long-term effects if you see a physician within 72 hrs. of onset. I don't remember the names of the drugs I was given, but they did help. Mine stretched from the middle of my back on the right side to the front of my chest. Time did the most to heal me. Shingles can really make you miserable.

I have read conflicting reports about shingles recurrence. My onc told me that, once you have had shingles, you won't get them again. Elsewhere I've read of people having multiple occurances. I don't know. The vaccine is suppose to be quite good, so anyone who has a compromised immune system and hasn't had shingles might want to consider it.

Hope you feel much better very soon!

    Hi:

Glad you wrote about not having the herpes zoster vaccine - I was recently trying to find a place to get the vaccine but locally it is out of stock and there is a huge waiting list - I never talked to my PCP or my onc about it - yikes - next time I will.  Anyway I hear the vaccine isn't all that effective but I also had a friend (a retired doctor) who got shingles and the pain was so bad that he took way too many pain meds and passed away two years later (he was diabetic).  My late dh (also diabetic) had shingles on the inside of his arm and they went away within two days - he said they didn't hurt all that much but dh had a VERY HIGH pain threshold.

Hope someone else comes on here and gives you some treatment advice - there must be some soothing cream you can put on it - meanwhile do what the dr. said and stay off your foot if you can - I haven't heard of any place that's weird re shingles - everyone seems to have them in weird places.  I too have neuropathy thanks to Taxotere guess it can't mask the shingles darn it neuropathy oughta be good for something!Frown

I came down with shingles during my chemotherapy treatments. I had in on my on the center of my chest and all under my arm pit on the non cancer side. It was the only time I went to the clinic outside of chemo. I was running a high fever and I was so exhausted. It was during  Christmas so by the time I went it was actually starting to get better and there was really nothing that they could do. I think my immune system was just plain wore out at that point.

I had shingles during chemo.  It appeared at the top of my neck, and the back of my head.  Since I had no hair it was easy to see.  My husband saw it and knew what it was, so I got treatment right away.  My PCP gave me oral meds for it and it cleared up.

I asked my oncologist about getting the vaccine.  He said, if I had shingles, that acts as a vaccine for me.   He said not to get the vaccine, there was no point.

    Hey Weesa,

I had shingles in September thanks to my arch nemesis, Prednisone. I had a band running from my spine to belly button. My onco put me on a one week course of Famciclovir to speed up the course of the outbreak. She also gave me tylenol 3 for the pain. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I can't imagine having them on the bottom of my foot Surprised The worst of the pain passed in about 10 days although it took nearly a month for all the sores to really heal. I don't know anything about the vaccine and it was never offered to me. Feel better soon!!

    hi weesa

i have had shingles since finishing treatment.  that would be for the last....all most 9 years.  never had them before...didn't have them during treatment...but ended up with chronic shingles ....i get them on my scalp....face.....they are awful.  i have an outbreak of them at least 1x a month.  my onc says the shot wouldn't really help me...although i do have a friend who is also a cancer survivor who did get the shot and it seems to help her.

i take valtrex. i only take it when i start to have an outbreak...i take 1 gram of valtrex when i start an outbreak;i take it at night.  it seems to help...although sometimes i am sicker then other times.  when i start a headache...i start the valtrex.  the shingles have been a pain in the butt; and i guess i have just kinda accepted that i get them and then take care of myself...rest...and take the valtres.  i also take cymbalta....low doesage..which helps with the nerve pain.  that also seems to help.

sorry you have the shingles.  i hate them.Yell////

I appreciate all of you responding so quickly--I am miserable. Have taken notes and when I see my doctor she will hear about the medications you suggest. Diana, I can't imagine chronic shingles. I too had them during chemo, but when I saw the blisters on the bottom of my foot, I assumed it was from new hiking shoes I had just purchased, so that assumption delayed my seeking help. It is a wicked place to have shingles--the bottom of one's foot--because the open blisters tend to develop infections on top of the neurological pain.

I got shingles during chemo.  My oncologist prescribed Gabapentin along with a massive anti-biotic.  The gabapentin was for the pain - it works as a numbing agent in a sense to the nerve endings - it blocks off the nerve endings.  Not sure how to really describe it - but it does work!

I was also prescribed Gabapentin to help me with the pain of having 3 fractures in my arm by a pain clinic so again working on the nerve endings in my arm to help with the pain.

Dear friends, it has felt so good to receive the hugs and the good solid information. I return to my pcp tomorrow a far better informed woman. I know that a passing bout of shingles is really small potatoes compared to some of what we deal with here, and soon the blisters will dry up and be history, but for today they really dominated my mind! I'm grateful for all the responsiveness we have here.

Thanks for your concern, Sherri. I have seen my pcp and have a prescription for neurontin, and when this thing has subsided I am going to get the herpes zoster vaccine. She was flabbergasted to see shingles on the bottom of a foot.  It's been painful--right up there with natural childbirth and rotator cuff surgery. Am hoping I've turned the corner...

weesa - just popping in to see how you're doing.  I just can't imagine shingles on the bottom of your foot, where the nerve endings are so tender.  (((Hugs)))

Hey, Sherri, well, I am enamored with neurontin. I sleep like a drunk and I have eliminated all sorts of little niggly pains that I have noticed for years, like pain from mastectomy, reconstruction and rotator cuff problems brought on by aromatase inhibitors. My dicey bladder has never felt better! Plus, the shingles are vacating the bottom of my foot. Really, in light of all the difficult news here, I should not complain about a temporary condition like shingles. Am a bit embarrassed I did, but then again I think, oh what the heck, it was truly a bitch

Jenn, I am humbled you should post to me about my damn shingles at this time in your life!.

Please know I will always be in your corner, rooting for you, even if I have to get to your corner with my bloody stump of a foot. I have followed your journey and always will.

Weesa,  Sorry I just found this. Sounds like the worst is over but know I am thinking of you...I've heard that shingles can be just awful. But, hey, the Neurontin sounds promising. I'm imagining it would be almost magical to have a day without the constant pain...the damn aching shoulder ribs feet fingers pain...

Glad you're on the upswing and hope your weekend is good.

Weesa - I had shingles during chemo, rash on my hip area which wasn't too bad and both my onc and family doctors kind of poo-pooed it away at first but when the nerve pain started it was awful!!  Took T3's for the pain and onc prescribed some pills (sorry can't remember the name - it was a herpes med).   It was exhausting - hope yours clears up soon.  I am convinced that the shingles wearing me down on top of chemo is what kept winding me up in the hospital.
