Maybe I'm being a big baby but  I had my BMX a month ago and having problems with my left arm.  They are using tape to keep it in the sturrips and it hurts so bad and goes numb.  It only takes them 15 mins but it's all I can do to take it somedays even after taken something for pain.  Anyone else have this problem?

Is it only when you're having rad treatment, or do you have pain otherwise?

I don't recall having pain during rad but did have some pain in general from lymphatic cording.  A physical therapist helped out a lot.

Jenny, when they did my simulation for rads they had my arm in a really painful position, and I made them change it or I wouldn't do the rads (I was bluffing of course).   I found that when I was going through the rads, it still hurt a little to put my arm in the stirrup, but I was doing the physical therapy exercises that they gave me to help with shoulder mobility and within a week or two my arm was a lot more comfortable and by the end didn't hurt at all.   I don't know if you have any restrictions due to reconstruction, but if you focus on exercises to help your arm get range of motion back, that pain will go away.

Well, I guess it happens during just rads b/c of the position in the stirrup, which is above my head and I ususally don't put it in that position or hold it there for long.  I have been active since surgery and they told me a few exercises to do.  I'm still healing I guess, I'm still sore & numb where my breast were and having pulling sensations in that arm.  No recon, maybe I need to be more aggressive with my exercises.  Just worried if I'm already having problems will it be worse after rads...do I have to look forward to LE, ugh!

My shoulder used to ache with rads, too, from keeping it up in that position so long.  I dreaded the long days as I would be gritting my teeth by the time I was able to move my arm.  I finished rads back in June and I don't think I have any more problems with my arm/shoulder since then than I did before rads.

Do you have TE's?  If so, that will contribute to the pain.

I am still numb (1 1/2 yrs out from Mx).  I know they always tell you there may be more pain etc. after radiation, but I didn't have any more problems after rads than before.   So far, I haven't had LE (knocking wood!!!!!)

Hi~ I had months of chemo after my bilateral mast and before radiation. I had to have radiation to both sides. I did have a hard time with my arms overhead even then. I had PT after the surgery that helped. All I can say is that it really does get better! Best of luck-

    Hi Jennyboog,

I also had BMX with no recon back in July 2010 and then rads starting in Sept. I would suggest gentle stretching at least once if not twice a day. I still do them and expect to continue to do so. My rad onc said that the MX scars want to pull tighter and you do the stretches to keep range of motion. I just lie on my back in bed with my knees bent and stretch my arms straight over my head so my fingers touch the mattress above my head. I also let my arms open to the side. Go slowly and don't bounce your arms. I hope this will help with the actual time you spend at radiation. BTW, if you start to feel pain from radiation, ask the doctor or nurse for help. I needed pain meds by the final week or two. Also special topical silvadene cream if you get burns. Luckily, although I got burns, they healed quickly (in two weeks). While I was doing rads I was told not to lift heavy weights with arm on rad side. But as soon as I was done and healed I was told to start using it and not favoring it. Also, like you I was very worried about lymphedema after all the chemo, surgeries and rads. But I've had nothing. I've flown 4 times since rads were over and had no problem. I hope you will also be fortunate not to get lymphedema. Good luck!

Thanks ladies for the info.  My rad onc told me the skin was really tight, maybe the exercises will help that.  @laurie09...sorry, I don't know what TE stands for :)

Sorry, my bad! Smile  TE = tissue expander.  I had mine in when I had rads and it definitely was tight. I hope you can find some relief!

If your insurance covers PT I would recommend an evaluation.  Maybe just stretches at home will correct it.  I went through PT during Rads and then for a little while after.  Had mild LE but the cording was the real issue and range of motion was lousy.  Laying there during rads was painful some days.  And I almost always had to use my right hand to guide my left arm from above my head back down to my side.

After I was done with PT I did my exercises at home.   I don't know if I was too enthusiatic/aggressive or if there was an underlying problem that I aggrevated.  But I've been back in PT for the last two months and doing much better.  Turns out the scar tissue in the skin, muscle and tendons were all pulling my shoulder forward which pull it out of alignment.  She's been working on getting rid of the scar tissue in the tendons and getting the pectoral muscle to release.  Now I'm focusing on better posture (keeping those shoulders back!) and doing exercises to keep the shoulder limber and build up the deltoids.  Much, much better!

Edited to add that it was my BS who looked at my pectoral area and said I would really benefit from more PT.

jenny - PT is a great suggestion.  After my bmx I did everything they told me and some days were tough.   During rads there was an older lady that told me for whatever reason the position she was in during the treatment was so painful that she started taking prescription pain meds about an hour before the treatment.  I don't remember the exact particulars, but she said otherwise she didn't have too much pain.  Could you get some good pain med through your system before you go?  Maybe the combination of a good pain medication along with PT and/or exercises would help relieve the pain.

Good luck and I hope that your pain is relieved soon.

Hi there, I began lymphatic massage right after surgery.  It helps.  You can learn yourself or go to a specialist.

I had a full month and half to recover before rads.  Maybe you're just in too early?  It does get better. Hang in there!

I had terrible arm pain with rads, during the set up appt, I thought I was going to have to move & screw up the whole thing.  I ended up taking pain meds before each rads session.  But long after rads I was still having pain, but was put on anti inflammatories for something else & voila! my arm pain that I'd had for a year was gone.  It's been gone for more than a year now.  Maybe this will help you too.  Good luck! Dee

Thanks ladies, took something before yesterday's tx and it was better.  I get paranoid sometimes and want to check to see if others had the same problem :)  I wasn't suppose to start rads this early but after an appt to meet my rad onc he moved me up and want to start right away. So, I'm sure that has played a role in this...only been 1 month since bmx.
