Were any of you going through a stressful time in your life at dx. or right before.  I was and wondered if it was the stress that triggered things for us.  Just a theory.

Hi Jenny - It's hard to say whether or not stress causes breast cancer IMO.  I think most on this board have gone thru stress during their lives.  I think there are two kinds of stress: normal everyday stress and abnormal stress.  I would think that long periods of abnormal stress could add to your chances of developing disease.  I often wonder about the abnormal stress I went thru for years over a long period of time and if it might have contributed to my BC diagnosis.

I don't like the notion that stress causes our BC, because to me it implies, that if I had handled the stress better, then maybe I wouldn't have gotten BC, let along to be Dx stage 3...to me it feels like blame the victim....but that said, stress can lower the bodies ability to fight!

No, I think it is just random.

I was living happily and with very little stress when diagnosed.  My stress level increased dramatically during treatment and after (fear of recurrence tends to stress me out).

Thanks ladies...I agree with the abnormal stress thing, that's what I was going through.  And personally it doesn't bother me to say that I couldn't handle it when I was going through it.  I'm not blaming it, I'm BRCA+ so I know that's where it came from but wondered what was the trigger for me since I'm the ONLY one in my family to ever have bc.  I also know stress does lower the bodies ability to fight. My dr. made a comment about it and it got me thinking.  Thanks again.

Jenny, I personally was going through a very stressful time in my life at the time I was dx.

I was in a very bad place emotionally. I have questioned this theory myself. The day before I was dx, I was telling my husband I  just Could not handle the stress in our life anymore, I don;t know what to make of it all! The crazy thing now is,  I sure don't  sweat the small stuff anymore!

One silverlining in this journey, I think , is we learn to handle our stress better, we take better care of ourselves as a result right?

I think its a crazy crap shoot unfourtinetly! Life is still life, its just life after bc.

    Hugs

    Stephanie

I dont think its random or stress.

I strongly believe that somewhere something happened. Perhaps mutation of genes, past over exposer of radiation, chronic inflammation.

Did you know, many girls during the early '60 got rheumatic fever, a chronic inflammation, treated with anti biotics and regular x-rays to bones, joints and heart.....

Well, stress. No I dont think its a trigger. For heart desease Yes..........

I think it's random, too.  Sometimes, we look for answers and they're just not there.  I had a lot of awful, stressful things happen in the years immediately preceding my cancer, but so did a lot of people I know who aren't facing this.  I was thinking today about how I now know so many people with cancer, but really it's still a farely rare thing to deal with.

Just at the time of diagnosis, it was stressful...but I've had MORE stressful times and I didn't get a dx of bc.  My bc likely started several years before my dx, so I attribute it's late dx to POOR RAD DX. I don't think the radiologist reading my mammograms for the previous three years really looked at them...just went through the motions.

I have a chronic inflammatory disease (for which I was taking a TNF inhibitor) and was under an enormous amount of stress with my youngest daughter's illness prior to diagnosis.  There are times I've wondered was that the toxic combination to allow the cancer cells that we all have in our bodies to take over?  But then I think..........there are people that are under more stress, less healthy, with other illnesses that don't get cancer.   I was asked by a friend what caused my cancer, which I thought was a bit of a stupid question, but I answered her with if they knew what caused it they would be better able to "cure" it.  I don't know if we'll ever know the answer to the question, cancer has been around for thousands of years.

I had/have a stressful life.  But, my grandmother lost three babies, almost lost a son to polio, my grandfather got polio and was out of work for a year (she did not work) and then he died when she was in her early fifties. She also had a nervous breakdown after losing her third child (she was RH-) and was in bed for nearly a year.  She also lived through the depression and grew up poor.  She is 93 and still going strong.  She had a lot more stress than I do and did not end up with Breast Cancer. In fact, no-one ever in the history of my family has ever had breast cancer and the women generally live to be well into their nineties. I am a family anomaly now.I have met women who are convinced stress played a part in their cancer.  Stress can depress the immune system and we need a good immune system to fight off cancer. So maybe it's not the actual stress but how we handle the stress. I wish they knew why this is happening to women and some men.

Thanks Kathleen...I wish they could find a reason why this happens too.  It was just an idea I had and was searching for something to blame, playing the why game I guess.  I agree, I've heard and seen others with more stress than I'll probably ever see and they don't have bc.  I'm a black sheep also...BRCA1+ and the first in my family, so that just adds to the question of what did I do different.  Take care.

I was going through a very stressful time.  My DH had lost his job, both sons were going through very bad experiences with depression, they both ended up in the hospital, my mother had Alzheimers and it was worsening.  I personally think this was not the only trigger for me, but I think it had a lot to do with it.  I am going to try to handle stress better from now on.  I think I'm going to take a meditation class.  I am actuallly less stressed over the breast cancer than I was over these other things, so maybe just the thought of handling stress better is already working for me.  Or maybe mothers just get stressed much more over their kids than themselves.

Good theory Kay, probably so...I handle stress better now too.  I think for me I try not to sweat the small stuff anymore and have a different attitude.

Some "experts" say yes stress is a trigger, some say no.  I have found that they change their opinions on everything from day to day, I take it with a grain of salt and form my own opinion.  Personally, I went through much in my years before BC, but for me I think family history has a much larger role in whether we get cancer, but the "experts" only say 10% due to family history.  I think it's more like 20% and second degree relatives should figure into that too....
