Meditation is associated with every moment of our lives.
In Indian culture, meditation is considered to be complete form of every action.Life is incomplete without meditation as we can succeed any physical or spiritual objectives through meditation. When I was in the hospital, Yoga session was performed in the evening especially for the cancer patients. I too attended one day. Just after after completion of my operation I was confined in the rented room waiting for radiotherapy dates. I had enough time to start with few Yoga asanas (poses) by myself. Let me write here few of my experiences with which till now it is become a part of my life.
One can sit in a meditative posture ,crossed your legs , back straight up and exale the breath as much as possible at one instance and inhale as much as again. After that, one can go on with deep meditation for about 15 - 20 atleast. I did it quite often , it is really helpful. As after the course of deep meditation you comes out as a new life.
There are other poses too but it is a very difficult, if we can't do we may be in bad shape. So I do not perform some postures which is really holistic and keep my mind away from worry.
After meditation, I feel good.

Swamiji says ...One of the most important acheivement of Yoga is physical and mental cleansing and strengthening .It is so powerful and effective in one,s life as it works on the holictic principles of harmony and unification. Medical scientists has supported the success of Yoga therapy because of the balance created in the nervous systems which directly influences all the other systems and organs of the body. Yoga was simply a means of maintaining health and well-being in an increasingly stressful society. Asanas do remove the physical discomfort of the day.Asanas means state of being in which one can remain physically and mentally steady, calm, quiet and comfortable. Regular practice of asana maintains the physical body in an optimum condition and enhances health even in an unhealthy body. snehlata

Hi, I teach yoga to women with BC, through treatment and afterward. It helps them and continues to help me. I've been doing yoga for about 20 years. It's amazing to me how much it helped me while going through treatment and beyond.
Nice to meet some other yogis.

Hello 3jays! Yawn. Up early. Returning today. Don't forget your sitting side stretch. I just did a few yoga poses to wake me up. Sending a long-distance hug.
-
Hi ! Maya2 .. nice to see you in this thread. I am not an expert Yogist. Yoga exercises are a part of my life. I do breathing exercises according to Indian way as taught to me and meditation besides surya namaskar. If one find difficulties to do all the yoga poses then "Surya (Sun) Namaskar (salutation)" suffix everything, that is why I do only surya namaskar particularly in the morning hours just before the sun rises. It gives me lot of benefit. I am now 52 , I am quite active. I can clim steep hills without any problem.
-
I wouldn't call myself an expert, except in the arena where I teach, with women who have had BC. But I agree with you that yoga is most definitely wonderful exercise in more ways than one. I love the Sun Salutation for Vinyasa. I'm 58 and take a VERY long hike every autumn. Last year I began the 800-kilometre Camino in Spain. Unfortunately, one of our patients died before I'd walked half-way. But there's always next year. I attribute yoga for my flexibility, strength and endurance--but I practise yoga at noon and during the evening. I'm a night person.

im glad you found this place for you, dear Maya... hello Raj.. good to hear from you, as well. i told Maya about you leaving flowers at the temple for me, as some of the other "gals" when im having a particularly difficult day, i think of that, and smile. 3jays

Grannydukes: Pick up or check out at the library, a DVD for beginners. Patricia Walden has one out and she goes very slowly so you can pick it up easily. If you can't find this one, just get one for beginners by someone else. Or, enroll in a beginning yoga class in your city. You can find them at yoga studios, hospital fitness centers, the YWCA or park and recreation centers.
It's not difficult. And soon your body will learn and it will always be easy to pick up where you left off. Something called "muscle memory." Good luck and have fun.
3jays: Good evening. So this is the lovely woman who placed flowers for you. Sneh, thank you, what a lovely thing to do. 3jays is real important to me.

Maya2 ! you are doing a tremendous job for the needy people. I appreciate your work. And at 58 you are so active perhaps I have started adoring you and will try to be active like you when I reach your age. I dont teach yoga to others as it is not required for our people seems to be smart by themself . I am now 52 , after my treatment and arimidex ( 5 yrs) my body has totally transformed to a fat lady particularly my belly. At present I am trying to reduce the fat from my belly through Yoga exercises , no meat, fish only vegetables with live oil. Let me see how much I can do.
-
Hi Sneh. You are so kind, but really, just doing my job. I love the women I work with.
Did I understand correctly you have completed taking Arimidex? If so, will the side effects you speak of then go away? Many women complain of weight gain, joint pain, thinning hair when they are taking Arimidex (and the other AIs). Once our patients are off the hormonal medicines I rarely see them to know, and although some doctors say the side effects go away, I'm not sure they do.
Are you doing any walking? If not, can you walk to work or near your house? I think you may need more than yoga to get started, although if you are flowing Sun Salutation over and over, you are getting a good workout. But, two great poses to tighten the stomach are Downward Facing Dog and Boat pose (some people call this Hip-Balancing Sequence). Start in Staff pose, bend knees and pull them toward your chest. Lean back slightly. Work to straighten your legs. Your body will look like a "V." Add some Sitting Twists and Side Stretches to tone the muscles along your sides. If you already know this, just disregard.
Tell me what you mean by "live oil" or are you saying olive oil? I do not eat any red meats and have not for about 20 years.Your fish and vegetable diet is good. That is mostly what I eat, often cooked in olive oil in a wok. I think you are well on your way to a slimmer stomach.
I drink tea too, both black and green. My favourite is Assam. It is delicious!
-
Hi Maya ! it is very intersting to get through someone who is aware of my place Assam through Tea. From where you get Assam Tea ? Is it available there ? Then it must be very costly out there.
At this age of 52 I dont want to be in v-shap but I am trying to reduce the size of belly only with yoga exercices. I do yoga poses of that kind sometimes only. These days, I have started climbing steep hills as a part of my routine exercies and do meditation which gives me immense relief. About "Live Oil".. I mean Olive Oil.. letter "O" got missed as I type in fast .
-
You made me laugh! You don't want to be in a "V." I laugh in yoga class some days too, when I ask everyone to do Downward Facing Dog. There is always one who says "You want me to do what?!" Because Down Dog is so funny looking. Climbing steep hills will definitely help get your body in the shape you want.
Yes, I get Assam tea from Amazon. I can get several boxes at one time. It's more expensive than the more commonly available teas, but not a lot more. I also found it when I lived in the US. Assam is not as readily available as some other types, but I MUST have it, so I look until I find it. There is a tea shop near me where I can try other flavours, but Assam wins thus far.

my two favorite gals on the same site!! i am blessed... they tell me not to do downward dog, but of course, i do. i find it a great stretch to relieve back stress, and i don't see where it is hurting anything.. lol
are you girls gardening yet, or is it still cold for you Maya, esp.. the spring is beginning to come to so. fla and my bulbs are sending little shoote off. im so pleased. my orchisds seem to have survived a winter going in and out of my house.. i wont know for sure till a bloom comes, but they've grown, and the greens are fine.
Mur started me off this weekend with a beautiful tangeriney.. colored begonia from home depot. hope it does well its such a splendid color!! sleep well.. sneh and Maya. 3jays

Hello 3jays. Still cool here, but I have a few things started on my balcony (that get pulled inside every evening). Starting to get more sunshine which I miss terribly in the winter. Don't mind winter, but prefer climates that get plenty of sun during the winter.
Down Dog is a great stretch. I find it stretches out the tightness I get from the rads and the scar tissue. Have to do it for that, but it also builds muscle and strength in our arms and tones the tummy. I do have to be careful when my herniated disc acts up and either skip it or do back bends immediately after. It can cause problems for people with sinus issues or headaches. I try to avoid it during those times, but it is one of my favourite poses.
-
Hi! 3jays and Maya2 ! Yoga exercises are not to be done when we are not well, during such time we can do only breathing exercise no poses at all. Down dog is a good pose for tuning the figure so I always try to do it but find it difficult because of body stiffness. At this age utmost care to be taken before we start any poses otherwise there is chances of breaking our body by ourself.
-
hey ladies, nothing to report new. just to say hello, hope all is well. love ya both.... 3jays
-
I extend the same to both of you.

Study: Even a Cram Course in Meditation Helps Reduce Pain
Meditation might beat morphine as a painkiller, new research suggests. In a small study, healthy medical students attended four 20-minute sessions to train them in "mindfulness meditation," based on techniques such as focusing on breathing and banishing of distracting thoughts. Before and after the training, participants underwent brain scans with a pad heated to a painful 120 degrees attached to the back of their leg. They reported a 40 percent decrease in pain intensity and a 57 percent reduction in pain unpleasantness following their training. Morphine and similar drugs typically reduce pain by about 25 percent. Meditation reduced activity in key pain-processing regions of the brain, according to findings published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience. "We found a big effect," study author Fadel Zeidan, a research fellow at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, said in a press statement. "This study shows that meditation produces real effects in the brain and can provide an effective way for people to substantially reduce their pain without medications."

Thanxs to you too. How,s life going on? Hope 3 jays in good spirit. Me became very energetic these days as I have pull many things together to keep balance in my day to day life. Life has become so hectic.
-
I guess I'm lucky (at least in one respect). I don't get stiff--except where my incision is. I do down dog daily to stretch that. Despite riding horses semi-professionally in my youth (3-day eventing), I've never had a broken bone. But I did hurt my back going down some stairs!
Meditation and yoga are a part of my daily life. I'm glad there are others here.
