Lobular Carcinoma after BiLateral Mastectomy

17 years ago I had bi-lateral mastectomies a month apart.  Yesterday I had a biopsy on a mass that formed near the scar on the breast I originally found the first cancer.  Today I was told it was a 4mm lobular carcinoma.  Not sure whether in Situ or Invasive.  Have to contact surgeon and oncologist.  I don't have a clue what I am looking at.  Anyone have advice/experience with this type of situation.  The mass was/is above my implant, near the scar.  Who knew???

I'm so sorry you are seeing 'the beast' again.  This must be so scary when you thought this was all behind you.

I have no personal experience, but I would guess that treatment will be influenced by your initial diagnosis and treatment.   If you had invasive breast cancer before your mastectomies, then you may have been more at risk for recurrance.  Also, as you probably know, mastectomies cannot remove ALL breast cells.  If you originally had in-situ cancer, then I've read some papers that estimate the risk for recurrance is about 1-2%.

This older article (2000) referrs to 3 out of 214 women who got recurrent breast cancer after bilateral mastectomy in 1960-1993. http://www.imaginis.com/breast-health-news/removing-healthy-breasts-reduces-breast-cancer-risk-dateline-april-17-2000

If you do have invasive (as I would suspect since I am guessing you don't have intact lobules or ducts after bilateral mastectomies unless you had lots of breast tissue left intact), then you may get more knowledgable eyeballs if you post on the ILC forum or Stage 1 or 2 or the Recurrance forum(s). However, of course, you are free to post where you wish.

I'm so sorry you are going through this.

Holy cow!!! You shouldn't have to be going through this again! Did you have ILC the first time? What were your ER/PR stats? Is this a new primary or a piece that has just slowly grown all these years? I have so many questions and you probably have a million more! Please keep posting so we can support you through this....hugs....
