Hair Mineral Analysis

Has anyone done this test? I was just thumbing through my results on mine, and was shocked to see what my Calcium levels in my tissue (hair) were elevated above normal, which the report says that my calcium is not being properly utilized. Wondering if anyone has used hair analysis to follow a course of treatment, as I thought the Vitamin D, supplements I have been taking were helping to maintain a balance of calcium in my system. My PTH levels are now normal, thanks to Vit D.

I really think everyone would benefit from hair analysis. My calcium levels were high too as well as copper, so I can't take Vit D as it will raise copper levels and then raise estrogen levels. My ND gave me several Magnesium supplements to help balance the calcium and within a few days all the achiness that my onc said was arthritic pain leftover from chemo was completely gone...so obviously it wasn't leftover achiness from chemo. I wish conventional docs were more open to helping us balance everything after going through treatment instead of just sending us on our merry way to deal with these "lifelong se's" that we really don't have to deal with. I wonder if high calcium is common among people who've been through tx?
-
My copper levels were high as well. I have been on magnesium for at least 6 months, so I was surprised about the calcium issue.
-
I'd like to do the hair analysis. Sounds like a good idea. Who does the testing?
-
My nutritionist ordered mine... it was done through a lab called TEI Trace Elements, Inc.
-
Marianna, I'm finding out it can take a while to get things back into balance. I've been on Zinc, Manganese, and Vit C for a year now in order to get the copper down. It's definitely coming down but it's been a slow process!
Valgirl - mine was done by Trace Elements too and ordered by my naturopath.

Twinmom, what is the dose of zinc that you are on? I have been wanting to ease off on the zinc since I heard about the denture creme that causes nerve damage due to prolonged zinc supplementation. My nutritionist had me on 60mg daily zinc, 600-900 magnesium, and 2-3 glasses of Vitamin C drink daily. I usually get in one glass of Vitamin C, as I am finding it difficult to consume that much liquid (it doesn't quench my thirst, so I go to H20). I also take a multi-vitamin that contains a bit of magnesium, copper and zinc, so I am looking for a good multi that doesn't have copper or zinc in it!
One thing that I noticed: my hair has thinned out DRAMATICALLY. I have lost about 1/3 the volume of my hair since I started the zinc supplements, so I am a bit concerned that maybe I'm getting too much?!? Other than that, my skin has never looked better due to the zinc.... took care of a lot of my cystic acne. That's all great, but when I saw the denture lawsuit and the people who had permanent nerve damage from the zinc, I started to wonder about it.....
-
Oh, wow, I hadn't heard about the denture cream/prolonged zinc. I'll have to ask about that next time I see the ND. He has me on something called ZMC plus. It has 25mg Zinc, 15mg Manganese, 500 mg Vit C and then some other things I was low on - Thiamine, Niacin, Methionine. That is per pill and I take two a day...when I remember to...maybe that's why it's taking so long, lol! I take a copper-free multivitamin called Para-Pack but I believe he recommended that for me because it's a glandular formula. My adrenals were shot and I have hypothyroidism. And I'm on about 500mg of magnesium a day between two different products.
All that plus the stuff for my ER+, my slow metabolism, and some digestive issues...some days I feel like I'll never be done trying to fix my body, lol. But it's worth it to feel good again!
My hair seems to be thinning a bit too, but I assumed it was the hypothyroidism. My nails don't grow/split/break and my hands and feet are like ice all the time. Do you plan on doing another hair analysis anytime soon? Maybe that would give you some clues as to the hair issue. Now that you mention it, my skin is radiant! I wonder how much zinc the denture people were getting and over how long a period of time?
-
Here's some information about the zinc.
I know zinc is used often as an acne treatment, and between the water miscible Vitamin A I took and the zinc, I have gotten my skin completely cleared up.... no more jawline acne and the texture of my skin has improved dramatically.
I am not sure about the hair analysis again... I've just been laid off from my job, so my visits to the nutritionist probably won't happen a lot this year. I will just go on maintenance mode until I get a new position and can afford to go again.
I don't have hypothyroidism, or at least I don't test positive for it. My TSH and Free T3 levels seem really very normal. I will say this, though. My eyebrows are pretty thin these days. Not sure what is up with that. Might be hypothryroidism, but I am thinking it's not. I'm mostly just disturbed about the loss of hair volume at this point.
I'll take a look around for copper free supplements to start taking. My nutritionist had me on Molybdem (sp?) as well.
-
I'm on Molybdenum as well! My eyebrows, at least my left one, never really grew in well after chemo. I still draw it in every morning. Maybe there's something more going on with me than hypothyroidism.
Interesting article about the denture cream. They didn't mention how much zinc is in it and the one guy used it for 20 years, so at this point I guess I'm not too worried about my intake.
I hear ya on cutting down the visits. I'm going to have to do that too but I am curious to see how much my results have changed since my last analysis. It's been six months since my last one but I'll probably wait until spring and hopefully I'll be able to stop the zinc and magnesium and lower my dose of thyroid and then just maintain the estrogen stuff. I'm a student right now and never know how I'm going to cover my supplement refills and then somehow I'm able to scrounge up some extra money. I'm hoping that luck holds out!
