Congratulations irr4993 and rachael!!!! You made it.
mjbmiller - I'm having 7 boosts but it will be over before I know it - thanks
Omaz - seeing you think I'm the guru of creams - see if you can get PawPaw ointment for your nipple. That's what I was told to use on my nipple last time and am using it again this time. Thing is, it might not have the same name over there as don't you all call paw paw papaya? Just looked at the tube and it's an Aussie product. It has calendula in it - interesting.

Omaz---I had similar issue with nipple and Doc said to use Polysporin (not sure if it is called same in US as in Canada). It seemed to have helped but I have to be really careful cleaning the area. It is a little itchy too. They said I could use some hydrocortisone when itchy but not too much as supposedly Hydrocortisone thins the skin--who knew? Things I have learned through radiation!
-
Thanks for the suggestions!!
-
I was there, unfortunately Raincity wasn't. I think she had a run in with a tea pot.

The Rad Techs are making me a new schedule and would probably like to make me come in the middle of the night. They are nice people so I know they won't actually do that...or will they? Hmmmm they probablty be thinkin bout it though.
-
Congratulationsn Rachel!!!!
I wanted to get some advice from you ladies. I have two issues... One, I have a really bad sore throat (they said its radiation splatter), which I told the nurse about yesterday and all she said was to use cough drops, and that if it got worse THEN they would prescribe something.. Well, it has gotten worse, but radiation is closed until tuesday. Is there any type of mouth rinse or something I can use that I don't need a script for?? Also, there is a part of skin under my arm that is REALLY REALLY painful. It looks like it might be starting to peel, but it's painful to raise my arm and to have it my side. I have been taking motrin, but it's only helping slightly.

Hi, I have been peeking in and trying to prepare for March Rads, I did join the thread, but am still unclear on some things, if I could I would love your help advice. right after treatment, should I put aloe on, then use the aquifer (that's what onc gave me samples of, wants me to use) a few times during the day/night? And I should be putting it up to my shoulder and under my arm? what about under the breast and the break down that is talked about? should I not keep under the breast moist? Yes, I'm a bit nervous/overwhelmed/and never cried about cancer until I was laying on the table to get marked for radiation. it just all hit me. thanks for anyhelp. Did anyone else use the aquifer/aloe combo and do ok? tried to read through most posts, but my head is spinning! thank you all

to those who was following me, knowing I had bad 2nd degree burns, my skin is almost healed, now i have to deal with an ugle burnt scar, which im sure in time will fade, dont care about the breast area....but theres a nice on on my neck
in time..........it will go away....
-
msjag - I put the aloe on right away after treatment. I used the aquphor before bed. I used miaderm and others during the day every 3 hours or so. I put a lot on, really gooped it up. All under the arm to the back, up above and underneath. I wore a soft cotton tank top under my bra. I got a bigger bra so nothing was tight. I wrapped the tank top over and under the breast so the underside of the breast did not touch the skin of the stomach. This also absorbed sweat under there. Goop often and well. With the aquaphor, rub it between your palms to soften it up. Make sure you do your nipple area very well. Even if your skin looks great keep up your routine. Don't use lotion within two hours of treatment. Avoid direct shower spray, pat dry gently. It'll be ok.
-
msjag - i used aloe and aquafor and also some prescription xclair as needed. If your rads will be under your arm and up to your shoulder, then you need to cream there as well. I started about a week before with aquafor in all the areas that would be impacted by my rads. My skin held up quite well. The last week, I got some burning under my arm but nothing of significance. I am just ten days done now after 35 treatments and have some very minor peeling left and the discoloration is essentially gone. I used xclair when I had that burny feeling and on my nipples early on because they were tender. The techs started taping my nipple down to diminish burn and that worked.
Aquafor is super greasy and hard on your clothing. I used aloe after treatments because it didnt ruin anything - if you have trader joe's they have some great stuff there that is 99% pure. I was told I could put aloe or aquafor on immediately after treatment and I did. Oh, I also put cornstarch under my breast to keep it dry. I have very large breasts and had no problems underneath thankfully and never was unable to wear a bra. I often chose not to at home though.
Omaz is right, you will likely be pleasantly surprised.
-
Raincity and Omaz, Thank you so much for your advice and I will take it. I will also get tshirts to wear under bra's. still confused about under the breast, I should be lotioning that area also right? even when using the tshirt or the cornstarch. Just making sure I have this down!! Again, it is so amazing to have you here to help. I already feel armed and ready for March rads, so many thanks to you.

Yes, do underneath as well. You won't be able to use both lotion and cornstarch or you will make some glue
I just used it after lotion was very dry and before putting on my bra which might irritate it. Be sure and ask your RO about any oil you may use. Some are ok with it, some are strongly opposed.
-
LOL--I think that I made glue a few times underneath my breast. I would put cornstarch on then lotion--then later would have to scrape the stuff off.
-
msjag - I just lubed up the under side well and wrapped the tank top there and didn't have any problem. I also wore a bra the whole time but at home usually went with just tank top.
-
HELLO REDNINRAH.. OUCHHH I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL I GOT A NICKELS SIZE 2ND DEGREE BURN ON MY BREAST,NICE BLISTER ON IT!! SOOOO MAD ABOUT IT,TAKING A SHORT BREAK FROM RADS 4 DAYS SO WE WILL SEE A WHEN I GO TUES. DID THEY KEEP ZAPPING YOU WITH THOSE BURNS THIS SEEMS SO BARBARIC
-
red and beacher - Gosh I am sorry to hear about the burns. I hope that they heal up fast.
-
Mariposa! Somehow you got lost in the responses.
I would suggest you ask the pharmacist at your local druggest, not a tech but the pharmacist. Another option would be to call in to your doctor and request a call back because you are in pain. I am shy about calling in myself, but we all need to get over that don't we?
I have gotten better about asking for the actual rx just in case I need it. I know there are over the counter treatments for sore throat for pain relief but because it could be hurting from radiation I would ask a professional.
I hope you are feeling better really soon.
Hugs Ginger

mariposa - Gargling with the biotene mouth wash helped my sore throat during chemo, maybe it would help for radiation sore throat. Also, under your arm, maybe try aquaphor. It really seals up the skin and has helped my sore nipple a lot so now it feels better. Also, maybe try a soft tank top that come all the way up to you armpit area to cover the skin so the bra doesn't rub.

I finished rads on Friday and for some reason feel really run down today. We had a busy day yesterday so that is probably part but I am also feeling a little sore in my throat, sneezing etc. I have not been "sick" (with a cold) for a long time. My RO did tell me on Friday that normally up to 2 weeks post-rads--you still feel really run down. Yuck. Today, I will relax.
-
Rachel - I finished friday morning and felt more tired than ever friday night. I think it is just "let down". I have been running on nervous energy for months. Now that it is over, I am crashing. I was super lazy and slept a lot this weekend and feel better now.
-
3 more boosts and then I'm done. I'm annoyed that the boosts still hit part of my armpit. It's peeling and raw now. My Surgeon told me that I might even be sore there for a few years! Said the RO always forget to mention that. Nice huh? I can't stand how much it hurts, making sleeping very hard. I know everyone says Rads are a breeze compared to chemo, but I don't know, having my arm and boob constantly hurting and itching seems worse to me.
Thanks for all of the support ladies. My next step will be Tamoxifen and I'm really not looking forward to that. I'm thinking of waiting to start after a vacation in April. My friend has been on it for a month or so now and her hot flashes are awful. She wakes up every 2 hours at night soaking wet. Even has them at work. I know it's supposed to help the cancer from growing again, but what about quality of life? Anyone decide not to take Tamoxifen?
-
Hi michcon - I am sorry to hear about your armpit area. That really must smart! Probably can't sleep on that side either. Hope it heals up soon. Are you using aquaphor? It seems to seal up the skin pretty well. I am also headed for tam but they haven't talked to me about it yet. My onc seems to take things one step at a time and doesn't get too far ahead. I have hot flashes all the time anyway but actually they are getting a little bit better now.
-
michcon, I decided against tamoxifen. I don't want to suggest that you should too, it was just what felt right for my particular circumstances and risk tolerance. I only had DCIS and it was borderline whether I even needed rads, my surgeon said I wouldn't, the rad oncologist talked me into it. He knew I was leaning against tamox, and said he really thought I should do either rads or tamox but doing both wouldn't add that much benefit. He estimated my risk of a recurrence if I did nothing after surgery at around 10-12%, if I did either rads or tamox it would go down to 4-5%, if I did both it would be 2-3%. So adding tamox would only give me another 1-2% of benefit. Not worth it for me for five years of potential side effects. Tamox would reduce the chance of cancer in my other breast which rads won't, but I'm not too worried about that, I've had a lot of abnormal mammos, calcifications, and one previous biopsy on the breast that had the cancer, and the other one's been clean.
Everyone's situation is so different that I don't think you can use the specifics of mine as a guide, but the process of weighing pros and cons can be similar. I read parts of the two very long threads "Bottle O'Tamoxifen" in the Hormonal section and "Natural girls" in the Alternative section, and that was helpful to me in getting an idea about how people who do have side effects described them. Of course, people who aren't having side effects are less likely to come here in the first place or to post about them. Many other posters have said that you can always get the tamoxifen, take it for a few weeks, and see how you feel, quit if it's too unpleasant.
-
Mich--sorry to hear about your armpit. Someone I met through my local support group passed over a pillow to use while sleeping--helps for your armpit...sort of looks like a small version of breastfeeding pillow. I used it when my arm was sore. I was lucky--didn't have the same peeling etc. Yesterday, I was out almost all day and wore a bra and by the night--my boob was very sore. With regards to Tamoxifen, I started it one month post-chemo (started it back in Dec) and I am one of those people who have had very limited side effects--some hot flashes (they are annoying especially when sleeping) and a little bit of achey joints but not sure if that is from Tamoxifen or residual from chemo.
-
Michcon - How high were your hormone receptors? If they were really high, then you would benefit from Tamoxifen. I'm on Arimidex and my receptors were 90% and 95%. There's no way I wouldn't take it. The hot flushes are an annoyance but it's more important to prevent recurrence. My onc was worried I would have really bad aches owing to my existing arthritis but so far I'm coping well.
Boosts start today!!!
Sue
-
Good luck with the boosts suepen!
-
Thanks Omaz. My skin is still looking good!!! It's a lot darker under the boob but still intact.
-
suepen - how long after you're done does the red/pink color start to fade?
-
My color started to fade very quickly. Even during boosts, the rest of the breast began to fade immediately.
-
Well, I knew I spoke to soon. Just noticed some skin breakdown under the boob. I really think it's unavoidable given the size of my girls. It's been extremely hot and humid here so I'm sure that's contributed to it. I did keep a pad in my bra but have been running around in a sarong and knickers for ages due to the extreme heat. Did sitck a small towel under there from time to time but not all the time.
I'm not upset like last time though cos I know it will heal up quickly after rads. I burrowed in my medicine drawer and can't find the solosite - must have used it all up. They'll have to dress it for me today and I can get some on the way home. I still have 2 big dressings though and my medi honey for later.
POOP!!!!!!
I can't remember how long it takes for the colour to fade - sorry.
Sue

You're on top of it this time though Sue!
