In Menopause -then-NOT??

Options

Has anyone had this happen? I was diagnosed at age 42 1/2 - almost 4 years ago now. So I started chemo (AC+T) and I stopped getting my period, as is common. I never got another period, even when I stopped chemo. And my onc. said that was not surprising. So we tested my FSH and estradiol levels periodically, and about a year ago now the levels showed that I was in fact in menopause. So we switched me from Tamoxifen to Aromasin. I've been taking Aromasin for 14 months. All of a sudden about 12 weeks ago, I got this sort of really really light spotting -more like discharge with a tinge to it-that lasted about 2 days. Now today, suddenly, I was actually bleeding! Like first day of your period light bleeding, but bleeding none the less. I called my oncologist and she said it could be a couple of things - vaginal dryness, or even that I am actually getting a period again! She says sometimes the hormone levels say you're in menopause, then all of a sudden, you're not! So I'm having bloodwork again to see where my hormone levels are. Like menopause was a false alarm or something!

Has anybody else had this happen to them? It scared the daylights out of me! And I'm still kind of feeling nervous (Although when I had the discharge back in December my gyno did a pelvic and trans-vaginal ultrasound and everything looked fine). Man oh man sometimes it just seems like the fear of a recurrence or of something going wrong just never goes away.

You are still pretty young.  It is probably your body firing up some hormones again.  We can never ignore stuff like that, unfortunately; but you are on track with the GYN and they are always looking for any worrisome changes.  Just keep getting monitored so that nothing gets overlooked.

Yes...has happened to me twice.... the first time 6 mos. after chemo (CT) (while on tamox) and then again after lupron shots to shut down my ovaries (couldn't tolerate that, so quit the shots, and 3 months later....a period) I was 44, and 45 then. My oncologist and gyn both say I must have rockin' ovaries..... I think our bodies are trying really hard to be normal(?) Keep up with the bloodwork...sounds like you have good doctors that are keeping a close eye on you. Good luck!

My onc wouldn't put me on an AI without first removing my ovaries. She said the AI's can kick-start them, even after Chemo-pause, and it can put them into overdrive.

I would call your Onc ASAP to see if it is safe for you to continue on the Aromisin.

I was 42 when diagnosed and after 4 rounds of T/C was put in chemopouse. My last chemo was Sept 30 and in Dec I started with Zoladex inj. I am seeing gyno tomorrow to discuss ovary removal.

Hmmmmm.... strange.  I had something similar last week.  I take lupron shots instead of the Tamox.  Last week I had BAD cramping.  I went to my Onc who did bloodword that showed I am in menopause (drug induced since I am 39) but barely so they were thinknig my body was just fighting it and working hard at having a period.  I also did the vaginal ultrasound and regular ultrasound which came back normal.  Now I am wondering if I should have a CT.  My OB said she would order it but it was up to me.  The pain has mostly gone away but I am so nervous about what it was that I am thinking I should just do it??????????
