Resveratrol Discussion
There are currently two human resveratrol/cancer trials underway, one for cancer prevention at the University of Leicester, and one for colon cancer at the University of California, Irvine. Both trials have passed the safety arm, meaning no overt toxicity. Cancer patients await the completion of these studies.
At the site of tumors cells there is an unzipping enzyme (glucuronidase) that uncouples resveratrol from glucuronate. This is nature's "drug delivery system," releasing resveratrol at the right time and place. This explains resveratrol's stealthiness. [Cancer Letters 231: 113-22, 2006; Oncogene 23: 6702-11, 2004; Toxicology Letters 161: 1-9, 2006; World Journal Gastroenterology 12: 5628-34, 2006; Investigative Ophthalmology Visual Science 47: 3708-16, 2006; Cancer Detection Prevention 30: 217-23, 2006; Molecular Cancer Therapy 4: 554-61, 2005; Journal Biological Chemistry 278: 41482-90, 2003]
As a cancer cure, resveratrol has been shown to actually induce malignant cells to die without disrupting the healthy ones. This is a very exciting discovery as the traditional method of chemotherapy kills the healthy cells too.
It is able to do this because it is such a powerful antioxidant and is a naturally occurring substance in plants to help them fight disease.
It seems to be able to shut off the genes required for tumor growth and can help in the fight against many cancers including lung, pancreatic, breast, prostate and even leukemia. In leukemia it has been shown to induce the cells to kill themselves.

I'm not absolutely sure if resveratrol is the answer to eradicating cancer, but it would be a nice alternative in cancer treatment. I just started taking consentrated amounts of it this week in hopes it will help. I'm not absolutely sure. According to all that I read on it, it seems to be harmless.

Breast Cancer / Human Breast Cancer Cells
Researchers from Kuwait University, found resveratrol-induced growth inhibition in
T47D human breast cancer cells was caused by apoptosis in a cell study.
Resveratrol-induced apoptosis is associated with the activation of the p53 in a dose-
and a time-dependent manner. [6]
Researchers from China Medical University, Taiwan, found resveratrol significantly
inhibited growth factor heregulin-beta1 (HRG-beta1)-mediated Matrix
metalloproteinase (MMP-9) expression in human breast cancer cells. Resveratrol
significantly suppressed HRG-beta1-mediated phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and
invasion of breast cancer cells. [8]Clinical Study in Human
A phase I study of oral resveratrol (single doses of 0.5, 1, 2.5, or 5 g) was conducted
by Leicester University, UK, in 10 healthy volunteers per dose level. Resveratrol and
six metabolites were recovered from plasma and urine. Peak plasma levels of
resveratrol at the highest dose were 539 +/- 384 ng/mL (2.4 micromol/L), which
occurred 1.5 h post-dose. Cancer preventive effects of resveratrol in cells in vitro
require levels of at least 5 micromol/L. The results suggest that consumption of
high-dose resveratrol might be insufficient to elicit systemic levels commensurate with
cancer preventive efficacy. [7]http://www.zhion.com/phytonutrients/Resveratrol_Cancers.html

I don't know of its effect on cancer cells; but resveratol definitely has helped my terrible varicose veins! I did my research on the topic; I buy a pure (tho expensive) brand and I can testify to its effectivenss. It works on the cellular level; the "root" cause of varicosities and I am very glad I discovered it. My hairdresser swears by it too and she's on her feet all day.
So, there you have it, my anecdotal research based on N=2. What more can I say?
-
Hi eileen1955,
What brand do you buy? How much do you take?I am looking to take it as well as I understand that it is anti-angiogenic, inhibiting growth of new blood vessels that can fuel cancerous tumors.I am glad that you can see it working.
-
I thought I'd get blasted for not providing real scientific data. Just anecdotal. If I run out of these pills, my legs start to feel "heavy" w/i about 4 days.
Full disclosure: I have no fiduciary interest in the company. No MSM.
perfectsupplements.com I don't put anything in my body unless I have researched it and feel certain that it is organic. Even then, I research to make sure that the dose is not so high that it would adversely affect my kidneys or liver as those organs filter the by-products out of my body.
It's made from pure Muscadine grapes; which are used to make red wine. I never drink red wine (It gives me a headache) so I have not been consuming Muscadine grapes at all. I have a lot of fun telling people that I just consumed (in one tablet) the equivalent of 700 glasses of wine! My gullible 20 yr old daughter offered to drive me home once.
The company makes not claims regarding medical efficacy; just mentions that ongoing research is being conducted. Certainly nothing approved by the FDA yet.
It is the anti-angiogenesis property that interested me in relieving my varicosities. This characteristic of interfering with the formation (genesis) of new blood vessels is what relieves my varicose veins. And, accordingly, it could very well interfere with the formation of new blood vessels forming new tumors.
I like that the company only purports the purity of the product; there are no false health claims here. Because, as I understand it, the definitive data does not yet exist.
My hairdresser and I order together so we get free shipping and handling.

I am a big believer in Reservatrol and I had my dad start taking it when he was diagosed with lymphoma 2 yrs ago. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I researched taking it myself. I found some information on the Memorial Sloan-Kettering integrative medicine website regarding estrogenic properties. Since my tumor was > 95% ER positive, I decided not to take it. I'm posting the link to the website because it's a great resource for information on just about every herbal supplement that exists.
-
thanks for that informative link, toomuch. I'm not worried about estrogen (triple negative and PBMx) but I don't want to be unaware of such things.
I will bookmark the website. thanks again.

toomuch...
what is the connection between reseveratrol and estrogen dominance? What proof? Reseveratrol does not have yeast or any preservatives in it...At least not in the resveratrol I'm taking. The reason I asked is because, I have estrogen and progesterone positive cancer (3+) and I am now taking a lot of resevertrol (plus other similiar type berries are included in the drink). Actually, I'm hoping it either destroys cancer cells, or keeps the cancer now in my breast in check.
The resevertrol I take comes in a liquid and powder form. It is all natural except the juc is flash pasturized. The power form is not pasturized. Incrediable stuff. The people I know, who uses the resveratrol, I'm using, mother is taking it. She was bed ridden with R.A. She is now pain free, independent, and driving.
I've been using it for only a week. I don't have RA, or vein issues, but I'm crossing my fingers it does all that it says.

evaberry - Proof? Like everything that we're treated with there are studies that contradict each other. If you go to the Resveratrol section at the Sloan Kettering website linked above, you will find their recommendations based on studies. The studies are footnoted and if you click on the footnote, it will take you to a pubmed summary of the study. The study that they site against using Reservatrol in ER + breast cancer is titled, Resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound found in grapes and wine, is an agonist for the estrogen receptor. It was published in 1997. They also site study, Resveratrol, a natural product derived from grape, exhibits antiestrogenic activity and inhibits the growth of human breast cancer cells. However, the recommendation from Sloan Kettering is that ER+ breast cancer patients should avoid resveratrol because it may stimulate the proliferation of certain tumor cells. So much is unknown. There is no definitive information. We just have to be comfortable with the decisions that we make for ourselves.

evabarry; since I touted the benefits of resveratol (for vein health) now I feel a little responsible for your taking it prior to surgery. I totally understand your need for a cure. I was rubbing my feet with francincese oil seven yrs ago, in the hope that it would prevent a re-currence. I lost some good $ and probably caused a few headaches. But I BOUGHT into the hope that is would cure me.
First, let's take a look at your source vs Memorial sloane kettering's guide to herbs. ZHion is apparently part of the promotion of natural substances. they list several brands; which probably means the site is funded by these companies?
Second, I am worried that your risk outweighs your benefit potential. You are facing surgery in a few weeks and you should not be taking anything that interferes with platelet aggregation. (Sloane-Kettering mentions the platelet inhibition in their description of resveratole) Just like you should not be taking aspirin and vitamin E; I'd stay off the resveratol b/c you DON'T want to enter surgery with a risk for bleeding. And you don't want your surgery postponed b/c your bloodwork indicates that you are not clotting properly.
Your cancer is estrogen-positive so I'd be more worried about the effect of resveratol on your estogen levels. Maybe resveratol prevents cancers; but if you have an estrogen-dependent tumor sitting there then please don't fuel it with more estrogen. It's like adding gasoline to a fire.
I have sort of experienced the effect of higher estrogen when I am on the resveratol; now that I see it on the MSK website. When I run out, I get cranky. then my mood lifts after several days on it. (My husband reminded me of this last nite when I showed him the msk link) I went thru chemopause at 47 so my ovaries have shut down.
so maybe I am getting a little estrogen boost.Just felt I had to contribute this; b/c I fear I gave you false hopes for resveratol. I wanted you to read this and then make the decision that feels right for you. Best wishes.

One more thought, evabarry. And PLEASE take this in the spirit it is intended.
You wrote, in your opening post, that resveratol caused malignant cells to die. I am not debating the validity of the statement; but I discovered that rapid cell turnover (causing necrotic cancer cells) is not a positive sign. I saw it on my path report and mentioned to my oncologist, thinking he would leap for joy, No, it meant that the cells were duplicating incredibly fast. It was one more reason for me to go thru chemo when I had only a 5mm bc. But I was also TN and grade 3 and other lab data that I cannot recall.
Sometimes what seems totally coherent (to me as a nurse) turns out to be not so. And it was mind-boggling to say the least. I felt I had no control or knowledge of breast cancer.
Once again, I wish you the best and will follow your surgical "journey" (I hate that term; jouneys are supposed to be fun with pleasant surpises) .
