Well I am 3 yrs out now Mar 12th, the weird thing is that my old Dr went to another location, and now have a younger woman Dr. Well she told me I had lrg breasts, and she was wondering since I am 3 years out that I should think of a dbl Mastectomy. She says its harder to detect another kind of cancer, cuz my breasts r lrg. Well now I'm just curious has anyone been told this. She said it would save me fr getting biopsies and would stop me fr worrying about getting another cancer in my other breast. Also congratulations for all of us who have reached 3 years...now lets push for 5....
-
Congratulations waniyetu! Are you BRCA possitive? I think if you are there is the real risk of a new primary cancer. I did the bilateral mastectomies for the reasons the doctor mentioned...not big boobs though just didn't want the worry and my kids were so young (still are) that I just didn't want to walk down this road again. Maybe get some more opinions. It is a very personal decision. I'd get good medical advice on the issue.
-
I agree with meggy, Get more opinions from other oncologists. If you are not BRCA+, find out what your actual risk of a new primary is... perhaps it's about the same as any woman on the street, and we don't advise they all get bilaterals. Find out what screening measures if any would be effective in your case. Can you live with that or are you a worrier? It's a very personal decision. Finally, do bear in mind that even after a BMx, there is still some risk, albeit small, of cancer.
-
Than you ladies for the response. No I have not been tested for the BRCA +, which I think is weird because since I have no family history of any kind of breast cancer my old Dr never encouraged me to do so, but since I have been hearing woman on this sight saying they get checked, well I guess this would help my decision. I do have 2 daughters 25 and 6 , I'm afraid for them, so that will be what I will do. Love and encouragement to both of you...
-
Happiness. Blessings to you.

Great news!

In just 3 weeks, I'll hit 3 1/2 years.....emotionally this is getting so much easier to handle. In the last month, though, I enjoyed too much wine at so many different special occasions....I'd better nip that. I do fall off the low-fat wagon sometimes but I get right back on....I keep a dialy journal. I know the grams of fat by heart so I just put a smiley face down if I kept my fat intake nice and low.
