Shirley: A bit of humor this morning: Who cares how we spell traveling or travelling as long as we find a way to do it? Please note I also take great liberties with my phrasing and sentences. One does not have to go to private schools to get a good education if you are fortunate to have good teachers. I had the best English teacher of all and she would stone me if she saw the liberties I take with writing my posts. Starting sentences with a preposition, run-on sentences, spelling errors. However, when I post, I am many times sharing a part of my life with people and I once read that great liberties grammatically can be taken when doing this.
I write as if I am directly speaking to someone and somehow most people don't care if I take liberties. I hope you don't because you would have to put my posts on "ignore" since I save my perfect grammar and spelling for any professional writings. We do have spellcheck on here but it never works correctly for me so I don't bother to use it. I am so glad to see you know how to spell traveling. It's never too late to start traveling, so why don't you? Have a good day!
-
Medigal, I love the way you write. As far as traveled/travelled my Webster's says either is right but then again I live near Canada and have traveled/travelled enough to be comfortable with either, and my spellcheck agrees.
-
My spell check did not agree...just saying. Sorry, I'm not Canadian.
Bren, I thought you were married to an attorney at one time. I could be way off.
Let me say to women here who think one can budget and travel...Well, I suppose it could be done. But for us....not a possibility..NADA...PERIOD! It took every single penny, living from pay day to pay day, to survive. I've climbed my mountain! Our children were our priorities. When our children graduated and made a life of their own....there could have been no greater dream or achievement.
Medigal, I'm happy you climbed your mountain. I was just saying..................you can believe it or not.
-
Medigal, I just finished reading your post. Sounds like there's a little sarcasms there? We still cannot afford to travel. Is that okay. We do make it to Charlotte to see our girls and gks. We also make it to Durham so I can see my onc. Hopefully we'll one day make it back to San Antonio. Health problems to BECOME a problem. Have a nice day.
-
Shirley .. I was married to an attorney .. a man I put through law school in my late thirties. I was 20 when my son was born and I raised him alone. I married the lawyer when my son was around 20 and he was already living on his own.

An interesting article about Ronald Reagan that was published in the Seattle Times last week-
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2014124857_reagancenter04.html
Here is a section of the article:
"But Reagan is sometimes misunderstood, adopted for causes or ideas that don't dovetail neatly with his record in office.
He is seen as an apostle of lower taxes, but he supported what was then the largest tax increase in California history when he served as governor, from 1967 to 1975.
Cutting deals with Democratic leaders in Congress, he slashed and raised taxes during his White House days.
The debt held by the public climbed on his watch: from $712 billion in 1980 to $2 trillion in 1988, and he never presented a balanced budget to Congress during his eight years in office.
Remembered for a massive military buildup, he also proposed abolishing nuclear weapons.
Known for traditional, Christian values, he was divorced and remarried and, according to his son's book, received a D in a college course on Christ's life.
He's often embraced by conservatives who want to see Social Security privatized, yet Reagan blessed a 1982 Social Security commission's blueprint for solvency that generated almost three decades of surpluses.
Conservative bristle at proposals to provide amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants, but a 1986 law signed by Reagan established a one-year amnesty program for illegal immigrants who had been in the United States at least four years. An estimated 2.7 million people took advantage."
I just thought it was interesting how he has become a myth, and no longer a man in the right's eyes.

Mary, I lean right and do not idolize the gipper. He was a president who did some good things and some bad things.

My seven kids were always my priority and they had all of their needs met. We travelled a lot in this country. My family is over 1000 miles from here and My Dad would never travel anywhere even to come see us so we went to see him every year or two before he died. My husband's family is four hours away and we see them 3 or 4 times a year. I haven't been to Europe since I was a kid but I don't know if I want to go back.
We all choose the things we want to do in this life and the only way anyone's choice is wrong is is she is not satisfied with it.
I am so happy to have all my kids and grandkids and a big bonus is that they all live fairly close to us. My life is full of blessings.
Edited to add: I went to work when my youngest went to school.
-
ack...it seems we have hit upon a tender subject. You know, it is different for each one of us when it comes to money and our kids and our lifestyles. No choice is bad if it was the right choice for you and your family. We only took a few road trips with the kids as they were growing up and packed a lifetime of memories into them. Poor kids were thought to be deprived because I HATE the world of disney and as such, we never went. Instead we showed them mountains and lakes and rivers. Does that make me a better parent or less shallow than those that saved up to go to disney? Not by a longshot. Just my choice. I know folks on both side sof the fence. Those will zillions of disposable dollars who went around the world and raised some pretty crappy kids...along with those who turned out amazing. Same on the side of the scale...those who did not much more than a week in a tent at some campground and their kids were no less for it and others, well, you get my drift. Income is no guarantee of a good life. Zippo. I see that proved every single day of my life. While lack of it can be challenging, it also does not equate with a bad life. As for private versus public education, same deal. I won a full board scholarship via academic performance to a very prestigious private prep school in the 8th grade as the result of a contest held in our district..and turned it down. My parents were less than thrilled. I turned out pretty darn good, probably not as good as I could have and probably not as bad as I would have. It took me longer to have my career yet amazingly I landed up with exactly what I wanted to do. In listing all of our many *accomplishments* be they money, trips taken, schooling for our children, houses, cars, etc...I understand why we do it to a point but sometimes I do cringe when I think of those among us who may be scrambling to pay a part of their medical bills. No, I am not suggesting curbing it as for some of us it may be the only part that makes us feel good..to say here is what I got...but it makes none of lesser or somehow more regardless. The beauty of the fabric of this community is our differences. For each of those wishing for a bucket of cash to ease the way, there are just as many of the "gots" who would give every buck for some of the simplicity of just being healthy. Not everyone who is wealthy is happy nor is everyone who is broke (poor is a state of mind in my eyes) unhappy. We are all inventive creative women who surely have given our all to those that we love to make their lives the best we thought they could be. I learn something from each of you. When I am down I try to celebrate along with you when you are at the peak of your game and when I am up there I try to show that it is possible to have some fun without being a bore about it. (Although I admit I got carried away posting my pic with Cher a couple of times...but it was so damn fun!) I remember when I was home with my son after his autism diagnosis and how damn tight money was every single day...and how I thought if I was rich he would be *cured*...nope...years later when I finally resumed a career of any kind I happened to be hired by a megamillionaire whose son has downs' and for the first time in my journey realized that broke me had managed to give my son the best possible treatment that money could not buy. Does it make me better than my boss who surely loves his son dearly? Not even close. Just different. I want to go back in time to that frightened young mother that I was who was navigating a road she had no idea as to where it was leading, wipe away her tears that fell everyday and tell her she was doing good in fact, frigging fantastic.
Anyway...i will climb down from the soapbox and thank you all for being the individuals you all are....
**edite dfor too many typos but i just gave up....hopefully you can decipher what the hell I meant:)
-
Oh holy crap............I have been spelling my name the Canadian way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
shok
-
And Shirley .. what is so ironic about all of it .. is that the only thing I ever really wanted was to be a stay at home mom. I was glad for you that you got the choice.
hugs,
Bren

Shirley: I had hoped you would notice I started off my reply to you "With a bit of humor". I was not trying to be sarcastic.Let's get one thing straight for all those who may have misunderstood my post. Just because traveling became an obsession to be due to my personal experience with that photo, it does not mean I think everyone has to travel. I have a relative who I adore and respect so much but he and his wife did not feel the need to travel like I did. They are very happy in the choices they have made for their lives together. Traveling is not everyone's "cup of tea" and sometimes it has nothing to do with money. It's just not a priority with them. That is the reason I tried to make it clear "why" I had to travel so much and made it a condition of whether I would even marry or not. I know it isn't the normal way to do things but I have never been known for following the fold when it comes to normalacy.
I did not have to send my kids to private school. One has a genius IQ and I have NO idea where she got that from! She could have gone for free to any school or college she choose. The other is normal but quite different in the way I am and I gave them the educations they preferred. I would never have budgeted away their educations. I feel our children should be top priority and traveling should always be secondary to taking care of them. I was fortunate because I learned how to manage our finances in a way which allowed me to do both. Most people would not want to sacrifice the things I did in order to find my mountain but it came with the full cooperation of DP and we never wanted for anything. It was like something was helping me to make this obsession a reality. I know I would not have married DP if he had said he hated traveling. I made sure all my ducks were in a row before I started off on my mission. I don't regret any thing I had to deny myself to make it a reality. I also made sure my mission did not cause my family to be denied anything they needed or wanted.
So Shirley, if you don't want to travel or still can't afford to please don't think I was being sarcastic with you. You made the right decisons for your life as I think I did with mine. Once I had two children, I, too, never believed I could make my dream a reality on the finances I had to work with.I took a course on Money Management for $3.00 and my entire future changed! So let's not let this traveling issue cause a strife. You should do in life what you feel your mission is and traveling is not something everyone enjoys. Have a nice day ladies!

Shokk - why does your tagline say "Stop Canada"? What would you like us to stop?
-
Lassie..now, I could be wrong, but.i am thinking she was making a little joke:)
-
Yeah shokk. Stop Canada? No one can stop us! hehe!
-
You know bluester...........why is it that we have to buy a majority of oil from you guys???????........our number one foreign importer for oil is Canada??????................I think its a conspiracy.............let's be realistic...........it's all the same freaking Continent......you guys came up with the idea of the EPA didn't you??????........admit it..........
yeah the Canadians are sitting around the hockey rink and thinking let's convince those stupid Americans that it is just immoral to drill for oil because of all the wildlife will be hurt.........we will get Al Gore to help us........he will do anything for money...........and then we will do all the drilling we want even out of the oil shell reserves that are actually part of American's reserve and we will sell them their own freaking oil............
We on the right know what you guys are up to........just so you know.........
.......shok
-
Lassie I will assume you are not a fan of South Park.........shok

Shirley, if you mean by Private School that it's Catholic School, my kids went to a Catholic School from KG to GR 13. Here in Canada, its free. We just direct our taxes to the Catholic Board instead of the Public one. They all turned out well. My oldest daughter is a lawyer, my son works in the telecommunication industry, and my youngest daughter is an actor. She has a 9 to 5 job right now until she catches a break.
My youngest has been my rock through all my surgeries. I'll see if I can find a pic of her.Edited to add pic.
-
HA shokk, we're not so stupid after all and I will admit to NOTHING! hehehe!
-
Blue- your kid is absolutely beautiful.
-
Thank you. She finished 4 years York University Theater. Acting has always been her dream. I remember her taking my clothes, pots and pans to school in grade 1 to act out her French or Italian skits.
-
Oooh! Are the Mounties about to invade???
When we moved to the States and the various health issues started negatively impacting our ability to travel, I had to be creative in providing a vacation for my two youngest children. We had had an extremely stressful year, my oldest was in Edmonton visiting her grandparents, and I felt we really needed a break. My employer gave me the time off, I packed up the car, and drove them to Topsail Island, NC. We stayed in a tent, I cooked fresh prawns and veggies over the campfire, and the kids still talk about that being one of the best vacations we have ever taken.
I am so glad you were able to find your mountain, Medigal! Since bc, I am far more aware of living in the moment, and not putting off the things I really want to do. I simply can not understand why travelling or not, or working or not, would be a contentious issue. We all have the right to make choices in our lives, and should respect others rights to live their lives differently. What should be important is holding onto our dreams, and finding our joy in life.
-
That is so cool. I wish her a plum contract.
-
Your daughter is gorgeous! My youngest daughter has a degree in costume design. I genuinely hope both of our daughters find success in their chosen fields.
-
Blue .. your daughter is beautiful! I hope she is very successful in all that she does.
-
Blue, you're DD is absolutely gorgeous! But you knew that already.
I was so angry when Obama took office and the kids in the D.C. private schools had their vouchers taken away. They were doing so well. The schools in D.C. are horrible! I really do not know why the vouchers were taken away...I need to look that one up.
Blue, the unions do not want vouchers given to students. They do not want Charter schools. There are very few Charter schools. It would take money away from the schools where the unionized teachers teach.
-
IronJaw, I hope I didn't give you the impression that my staying home was better than another woman who worked. For me it was the best. I take my hat off to any woman who works and raises a family. Only one off my DDs' has children and she has to work. Her DH and she cannot make it on a teacher's salary..he's the teacher.
BTW, you were just a few miles from me. I live in Wilmington. I think camping would be really fun ESPECIALLY in a RV! A very small one would do.
-
Actually, all three are gorgeous, but totally different from one another. Raised the same but totally different. Those liberal genes, ya know!
-
Blue, your daughter is just stunning. You must be very proud of your children. I never had them and...surprise...regret it now.
-
Blue-what a beautiful daughter. Inside and out.
