Cancer doesn't care if we're good or bad, virtuous or vicious, compassionate or inconsiderate.

From the New York Times article today:

A Fighting Spirit Won't Save Your Life

Just thought I'd share this with you today.  In case any of us are being blamed, again, for having bc.

Thanks for sharing the link to this article. I realized, through the cancer experience, that positive thinking cannot prevent or cure cancer. I have seen the most positive, lovely people get cancer and die, while some miserable, destructive human beings live to an old age. I went through a period of wondering if I had brought cancer on myself, or whether I was at increased risk of recurrence because I was so distraught and depressed over the diagnosis. My cancer-survivor counselor assured me there was absolutely no scientific basis for those beliefs. She said, of her own cancer experience, "I'm living proof you can be totally miserable and survive." I am so grateful to her!

A good book to read along these lines is "Bright Sided" by breast cancer survivor Barbara Ehrenreich. She writes about how American culture is misguided and not served by the "positive" thinking movement.

    Best,
