Day 4 of Denouncing Soda and I Need a Fix Bad!
Well, last week, I finally decided to break free of the soda addiction and today is the 4th day soda free. Its not as easy as I thought it would be. I need a soda fix bad!

Darlene,
I admire you! I've improved my eating in every area EXCEPT giving up Diet Coke. It's on the agenda for cutting back on.

There has to be something secret in sodas that makes them so hard to give up. Like what they did with cigarettes or something.
-
Really, when you think about it they're kind of gross - all chemicals and nothing really natural in them. Ah, well...
-
You go, Darlene!
I remember after my one really horrible night after chemo - puking and diarrheaing ALL night long - I crawled out of bed and told my daughter to go to CircleK and buy me their largest Pepsi with lots of ice and bring it home FAST. (This was also always my go-to hangover cure back in my youth.) Sometimes only the real thing will do (I know I'm mixing up my soda ads.)

Darlene- When i started my diet 6 months ago i gave up all pasta, rice, potatoes, and sugar so i had to give up my pepsi too, that was the hardest part of all but after about a week i didnt even crave it maybe once in awhile but when i did have a sip of one later on it was to sweet and now i dont even want one, i was like suemed i had to have a large pepsi with lots of ice and it was the first thing i drank in the morning even before i got out of bed i had to have a sip of it, hang in there it will get better, i promise!

And this too shall pass!!!! Kicking Coke (regular) was far more difficult than diet, go figure!
Only drink Coke every once in a while. It was great on Chemo days, so suemed8749 I understand what you are saying!
There is something about sugar, and caffeine that is so addicting.
Good luck to you DarleneD !!!!

Oh gosh, girls, I know how addictive it is (I used to drink 4-8 or more 16-ounce bottles of Diet Coke) but PLEASE go cold-turkey. The secret is 1) understanding how poisonous it is (e.g. aspartame literally causes tumors and accelerates their growth) and 2) finding a good substitute.
Figure out what you like about that nasty stuff, then you can experiment with substitutes. For instance, I found that it was the fizziness I liked. So, for a while I would drink carbonated water with some lemon squeezed into it. My all-time favorite substitute that makes me no longer crave soft drinks in any way is kombucha (a fermented tea drink). It's expensive unless you brew it yourself (which I do now), but it's soooooo good! It's good for you, too... lots of good probiotics and cancer-fighting nutrients.
Herbal tea is another good substitute... force yourself to drink green tea with a few drops of stevia in it to sweeten it, and you'll come to love it and crave it. Or brew up a whole pitcher full of green tea... sweeten with stevia, squeeze some lemon, refrigerate, and you have cancer-fighting green tea lemonade. Add some mint leaves for minty green tea lemonade! So yummy and refreshing, and soon you'll crave the healthy stuff as much as you used to crave the dead, chemical-filled, cancer-causing soft drinks.

Hi Darlene - try sparkling water that is lemon or lime flavored! Perrier is good, but most grocery chains have their own versions that are a lot cheaper. I also kicked the soda habit a few years ago - good for you!! :-) I still have coffee in the morning, but only before 10, then no more caffeine for the day. I used to have cysts in one of my breasts and they completely disappeared, so I think caffeine was a culprit.

I gave up soda too. Its very hard! Now I drink tea with stevia
Keep up the good work!

I had been drinking at least 1 can of diet dr pepper every morning since 1983. I gave it up when I started chemo October 5th because I know soda can aggravate heartburn… and yes I have 2 drugs for that on chemo).
I have only had 1 can in that entire time… and I'll have to admit it tasted awesome. Since I've given it up I found out I have slight osteopenia.I will be going on Als in a few weeks too so I know that my morning Dr. Pepper days are permanently over. Once in a while OK but no steady diet anymore.
Hang in there it does get better with time.
-
Darlene, you can also mix sparkling water with apple juice in about a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. It will be sweet & fizzy. Deanna
PS ~ If you can stick with it, you will be absolutely shocked at how overly sweet & chemical tasting soft drinks are after you haven't had one for a few weeks.

I am joining you, Darlene. I drink diet, caffeine free soft drinks at least once a day usually at night watching TV. More on weekends. I gave them up years ago when I was pregnant and I can do it again. I'm learning to drink green tea (not normally a tea drinker) and I'll try harder. I do the water with lemon juice and that's not bad at all. Will also do the apple juice (have some with no added sugar in the fridge) and water. Yes, yes, we can.
