I think the low flows come with different "wattages".Money mouth  Others come with a regular flush + a "juicy doodle" flush.  (I got a good laugh at this last expression)

I bought a brand new house last year and everything was upgraded (considered a luxury townhouse).  We have those low flushers and have never had a problem.....maybe because they are upgraded?

One of the reasons this country has lost jobs is because of health care costs.  If we had universal health care as many of these countries do, a company would not have to take that into consideration in regards to overhead.  My husband is dealing with a company that was originally in New England but has moved its office into Quebec so that its employees will have health care at a far lower cost.

I am all for laws that protect the environment.

We use 15 watt light bulbs in our "ambiant" lights, in the lights we read by we use higher watt (60's) with a directed beam, so we don't have to light up the entire room.

As for why we haven't heard about the ban, you're right it was talked about years ago (here in Canada) but nothing was said in the media in the months prior to the ban.  I watch the news 2x a day & read a city newspaper everyday, so I think I am fairly well read.

As for low flow showers & toilets, we have had those for years & find they are fine.  No problem with the low flow toilets, but I understand they have gotten better over the years.

Unfortunately we live out in the country & most of our neighbours have wood burning appliances as their primary heat source it makes our air quality quite bad in the winter.

The best way to avoid losing jobs to china is to refuse to buy merchandise made in china.  The influence of our mighty dollar is capable of this change, if, enough were to participate.

It's a trade off more stuff for less dollars = made in china; less stuff - possible a lot less = made at home.

I avoid buying products made in china because of the number of problems associated with their production.  Recently, I just read about them mixing honey with corn syrup, falsifying the shipping documents and smuggling into the US.

Exactly. So many things have been recalled that I try not to buy anything made in China.

Try to avoid things made in China. At last something we all seem to agree on.

    mfrog:

The incandescent bulb ban doesn't start in Canada in general till 2012 and in Ontario at that time as well - you are I believe in BC - your ban started this past January 1.

I am stockpiling - really don't think the curlycue bulbs are going to be the final answer and sure don't think they give off enough light for reading but I already have them in my bathrooms and I guess they're o.k. but I really don't have them on very long at a given time so the rooms seem darker.

I agree. Frankly, I don't trust their products. Doesn't seem to be any oversight at all. The whole dog food fiasco did it for me! Don't mess with my dog or my children!

I'm sure the next generation of light bulbs will be better. Human ingenuity is a great thing.

That's very old news.  Very old indeed.  And, they will have mercury in them and you'll need a special suit to put on in order to clean it up and you can vacuum it up because you don't want the mercury to whatever mercury does.  Beck had this on his show a couple of years ago...too funny.  I used to break more thermometers (the old kind) and never worry about the mercury.  I guess I got it up or it rolled around somewhere.

I'm really surprised you have not heard about this.  Undecided

Human Ingenuity.....Yeah....they can make TV's that are 1/2" thick but can't find cures........but that's another story.

I do not follow legislation that I don't care about. My concerns are bigger than lightbulbs. I like cfls so why would I care if they are mandated as long as I can get them. You do not need a hazmat suit to clean up cfl bulbs, you just have to be careful.

As mentioned, Bush was no friend to the conservatives, but someone had to get the legislation to his desk. It was not like he made an executive order to ban light bulbs, or appoint a light bulb czar.

LMBO.  Don't forget the Dems held both houses...they would have over-ridden his veto.  Wink

Good luck with finding things NOT made in China.  Donald Trump is furious about China.  Did you know he's thinking about running for president?

When my children come for a visit, they love our shower.  We have the old shower heads and it gives off lots of pressure.

rosemary-b, I'm happy you like them.  I don't.  I plan to stock up on the old kind.  And we also have a fireplace, but do not use it.  It would need cleaning and a checkup before we used it.  Sure would be nice when electricity went off.  However, we do have a small generator, but I'm not sure it could run our heat pump.

Thank you for the info Sandy, figures that it's only us that would be ahead of the curve!!  I'm going to let the hubbub settle down & then make sure I order a couple of cases of bulbs for my antique lights.  Can you imagine all the smuggling of light bulbs over the BC/Alberta border! :)

For regular lights I'm okay with the CFL's til they come up with something new.

I've discovered that better quality CFL's (more expensive) bought from lighting stores as opposed to the ones you get at big box actually are brighter immediately.

A correction of fact -- the Democratic party never held a veto-proof majority during Bush's presidency. It requires a two-thirds majority in both houses to override a veto. In addition, if the president does not want to sign a bill but doesn't want to veto it either, the president can let it become law without a presidential signature.

I'm back from the wild, wild west!  So we're now discussing curly fry bulbs (hate 'em) and low-flow toilets (don't have one yet).  I haven't taken a poll yet, but does the low-flow toilet problem follow party lines?  Just curious... ;-)

Maybe someone should admit that curly fry bulbs are a mistake and invent something new.  (Sorry, fellow left-leaners. I can't handle anything that requires special disposal!)  How about an LED light backed by multiple little mirrors?  Better yet, a flashlight aimed at a cleverly placed mirror that reflects the beam to OTHER cleverly placed mirrors throughout the house.  Light up your whole house with a flashlight!  I'm just full of goofy ideas.  Maybe I should run for Congress?  ;-)

Here's the poop on the toilets! (Pun intended)  Left, Right and in between all hate them - except for Blue (the one who doesn't see herself in the mirror). Some of us on the left love the curly bulbs - we maintain they never break, because they never burn out, therefore they never have to changed. And, no, you don't have to wear a HazMat suit if they do break.

    Welcome Back! You got snow??

Edited to add: Since Blue has no use for the bathroom mirror, perhaps she's never actually used her toilet.

It's easy to "go green".  I've got low-flow toilets (no problems); curly bulbs that are bright as soon as you turn them on -- and they DO last a long, long time; solar-powered water heater (the panels are on the roof); I reduce, re-use and recycle (which would truly make my late depression-era mother proud!); DH tends a productive veggie and fruit garden; and I drive a hybrid, properly!  Oh yes, I walk to the shops and post office, and I bike on our trails along the parkway.  I volunteer for environmental (and other) concerns.  What's not to like?

Enough complaining already about light bulbs.  Try caring for the future instead.

My curly bulbs die out quite frequently, regardless of the brand I use.  I've had the wiring in my house checked, too, with no problems reported.  LEDs and mirrors, I'm tellin' ya.

Alpal - we did get snow!  About 6" last night but it's turning to ice.  I miss the snow in Yellowstone!
