FIVE YEARS TODAY

Just thought I would post that today marks 5 years since my dx.  I NEVER thought I would be here but as it turns out, I am!!

My kids were 4, 6 and 8 when I was diagnosed.  My kids are now 9, 11 and 13.  My oldest will be going to high school in Sept.

I have some mixed feeling about this date.  I know that we are always at risk but I also know that I have to get to 5 years before I get to 10.  To quote my husband: "100% of people who never have a recurrence get to 5 years."

So, there you have it.  I am sort of celebrating but am a little nervous about it too.

Yahoo!!!  thanks for posting.  I love what your husband said.  I opted for no recon as well.  Are you still happy with that decision?

    Sciencegirl:

Yes!  One of the best decisions I ever made.  People kept telling me I would change my mind but I can't imagine wanting recon now.

Congrats on hitting your five years.  It is definately cause to celebrate.  I became a member of the five year club in the fall if you count my surgery date and June will be my five years from completion of treatment.

Wow! We stage 3'ers are piling up some serious longevity here. Good wishes, before you know it (tempus fugit) you will be at ten.

I always feel conflicted about celebrating a cancerversary--on the one hand, it seems you should not let such an auspicious event go uncelebrated, but on the other hand I secretly wonder if I am tempting fate by doing so. Usually mix up a batch of margueritas to get me thru the conflicted day.

I wonder if you don't feel that, too.

Weesa- Ha ha.  I mixed up pomegranate martins last night.  I also feel conflicted.  I am always worried about tempting fate.

    Carol,

You keep those years coming.  It's so great to read a book about a survivor and then find she is still doing great so keep it going!!!!  Oh and your picture is absolutely beautiful...

Congratulations!!!!!  I'm doing the 5 yr happy dance........whoo hooooooo.......... Thanks for sharing.

I have decided not to do recon yet.  I thought about doing it January 2011, but cancelled the consult appointment and decided that I really feel good and am not ready for another big, painful surgery right now.  I don't regret it, nor do I feel like something is missing.........except maybe when I get dressed in a hurry to make a hair appt, run out of the door and realize as I'm getting my hair done that I forgot to put on my boobs.

    Yeah Carol!

I too was happy to get the 5 years..NED!

I still worry about recurrence but less so.

I did      not celebrate in any way..I still rate the diagnosis a low point in my life. So can't get happy on "the day".

I do celebrate my continued NED every day though.
