Beesie & All,
Our personal profiles on our BCO homepages may no longer be open to search engines, but I or any member of BCO (or anyone who has a friend who has shared their access) can open your personal profile, go to the right hand side of the page to "Email this profile" and send your profile to everyone they have an email address for - or to a company who will use it for their database.
-
well that got me worried! So I looked at my profile and what it says in the top right hand corner is "edit this profile" which is considerably different from "e-mail". Is yours different, Double-or-Nothing?
-
lassie11,
Go to the top of this page. Click member list. Type in lassie11. To the right of the search page that comes up it will give you the "Email this"
-
lassie11 - I just looked at your personal profile. What do you care if it can be emailed. You have basically no personal info listed.
-
When you look at your own profile, you can "edit this profile". When you look at someone else's profile you can "email to a friend".
-
PatMom,
You're right, which makes it worse. I don't have the option to send my info to others, but you do!!??
-
PatMom, I found the same thing. So, my BCO "public" profile is not accessible to non-members and cannot be retrieved anymore with a Google search, but any BCO member (except me) can email it to anyone they wish?
Why on earth would BCO set up their discussion board pages so this would be possible? That makes no sense at all, does it?
otter

That option needs to go!

2tzus,
I just went to your profile and emailed it to myself. Here is the results:

Nancy, I was shocked when I saw so many women including their full names on that petition. Yes, they should have been warned.
I don't think that it's right that the link to our profiles can be emailed to other people. But the fact is that anyone who comes on the board, even someone who isn't a member, can click on anyone's profile and see what's there. So our profiles are still open and available to anyone who wanders by this site but at least they are no longer being used as bait to get people to this site.
-
Beesie,
You said, "So our profiles are still open and available to anyone who wanders by this site but at least they are no longer being used as bait to get people to this site."
There is a member who signs in, but doesn't post (or rarely posts) to pick up newbies. The newbies are then PM'd and moved over to her website.
-
I was very taken aback by the terms of service provision that gives BCO rights to anything we write here. I haven't posted much of interest, but I think of all the stories told on threads like "Laughter is the best medicine" and realized that BCO could collect those stories and publish them and profit from them and the writers would have no recourse.
-
revkat & all,
The terms of this website & Timtam's website give the websites total rights of possession to everything - including pictures!
-
Right. Which is why I don't post anything of interest here
. Other discussion boards I'm a part of don't have that provision, so that people can post what would be considered "blog" type entries without loosing their rights to the material.
-
revkat,
Exactly. We need to educate posters here that everything is public & that on Timtam's site the info can become public!
-
Ztzus,
You joined in July 2008, but have no info on your diagnosis or treatment, yet you're totally informed on the fact that that I have previous comments about Timtam's website!? I don't think she does it at great cost to herself. I think she makes a profit from advertisement and selling our personal info and pictures. I got kick off of this site for a short period because I let people know that their pictures could be copied from her website.
I don't get your your protesting my "bitching"!?? Why doesn't Timtam answer on this board???
-
Oh, Surprise, surprise, Timtam's logged back on to see what's going on with posts. Good night, you're all her's.
-
TimTam's site truly saved my emotional well-being after a botched up reconstruction. I would post any picture there to help other women and I have. I trust her.
Being a teacher I am careful about posting pictures and personal information that could lead someone to find me. I am this way on any site that I visit.

2tzus: Ten days ago, on the thread, "I say yes, yousay no, OR People are Strange", you wrote;
"I just find it peculiar that grown adults feel the need to protect themselves from somebody else's "words" as it these "words" have such power over them that it will cause them to do something untoward, or worse, make them feel bad. If I don't like something someone says, I either respond to it, or I move on. I don't have to censor myself. Very odd but probably useful for those with self-control issues."
How's that working for you now?
-
Uh-oh, I'm surprised no one has hit the delete button yet on some "personal attacks" a few posts back. Come on, gals, no need for a pissing contest here.
It's a public board. Anyone can see, respond, steal, slander, disguise--whatever, to suit their needs. For the vast majority, though, it's a place of support and refuge. Yeah, we need to be aware of the implications of putting personal info on a public board. I cringe when I see people put their real names, email addresses and phone numbers in a post.
As for the attack on TimTam's site--that's just uncalled for, and it makes me think it's from someone who was denied access when she wanted it. I could be wrong. I admit I can be! Keep her out of it. She has a private board, thank goodness. Many of us would be lost without her.
And lost without this board, too, public as it is. Just be smart and play nice.

"Beesie,

There is a member who signs in, but doesn't post (or rarely posts) to pick up newbies. The newbies are then PM'd and moved over to her website."D-or-N, what that individual is doing is not a violation of the rules - thank goodness we have the ability to send PMs since those are the only things we write on this site that aren't open to public view. What they are doing is abusing the rights that they, and all of us, have been given on this site. What's anyone supposed to do about that? How do you stop someone who is intent on abusing the system? Or at least, how do you stop them without handcuffing all the others here who aren't abusing the system?
I want to clarify one of my points from last night. I do think that there is a big difference between anyone who wanders onto this site being able to view everything we post and view our profiles, vs. having our personal profiles come up in Google. The first is life on the internet; it's what we should all expect, given that this is a public website. The second is an invasion of privacy. Here's why I think so:
Many women provide a lot of detail in their personal profiles. Someone might have a screenname that masks their identity well ("IhaveBC", for example) but has information about her personal life in her profile ("I'm married to a great guy named Bill and have two wonderful kids, Amy and Andy"). If our profiles are available on internet search engines then a co-worker who is curious about this woman's diagnosis would be able to easily track her down. Enter "breast cancer, Bill, Amy, Andy" into a search engine and this individual's profile would pop up. This individual who knows her would then know her screenname and be able to read all about her diagnosis and treatment and feelings. Her identify would be exposed. Without our profiles being searchable, while it's still possible to make this connection (and some of us make it very easy by including lots of personal information in our public posts), in most cases it would be a lot more different - and probably not worth the effort. Someone would have to find this website (among all the discussion boards out there) and then read lots of posts and click on lots of profiles in order to make the same connection. So no, we are not protected because our profiles can still be clicked on by anyone (and it would be good if this could be changed) but it's definitely better than it was.
Nancy, I understand your position about why this site should be private, given the emotional state that many of the posters are in. But 2tzus point is that this is not a private website; it's a public site. That's just a fact, one that we have to understand and accept. If someone wants privacy, this is not the site to come to.
I think it's unfortunate that TimTam's site has been brought up in this discussion, because there is simply no comparison, nor should there be. TimTam's site is private and she makes every effort to restrict entry to only those who are authorized and she monitors entry so that if anyone does try to sneak in unapproved, they are caught. This is why so many women are willing to post pictures there - women who would never consider posting pictures here - and why the discussion there is in many ways much more intimate that it is here. Issues with TimTam's forum should be discussed on that forum among those who participate there; this is not the place for those discussions since that private website is in no way connected to this public website.

No, not still counting. In our family, 3 was the tops. Heaven forbid if Mom (me) ever reached the actual "3". I used halfs and quarters and tenths even tho the wee ones didn't understand it. Anything to give them time to think over whatever action cause the count to begin in the first place. And decide if they wanted to see what "3" would mean. LOL
Actually, I was listing this thread on my favs and apparently one must write someting in the reply box before it will list it on the favs list. LOL
-
Oh .. the dreaded 3-count. After awhile when my son was older, he would laugh at the 3-count. Now he uses it on his kids!

Nancy, we all know how you felt about that time in your life. Someone here finally make a descriptive term that I found most appropriate: scared stupid. Please believe I am not making fun of you and you may not have been, but I was certainly scared stupid when I was diagnosed -- just never knew how to describe it.
Oh, and re: numbers: ck out this link to help understand the budget and all the big numbers the reps are throwing around--this is not meant for either "side", just a visual of the money Congress messes with:
-
Nancy, If you clear your cache, it won't show. It will show the new page.
-
Not sure how it works on a mac. But maybe you can read here.
-
Nancy, FYI I just googled "breastcancer.org mammogram petition nancy IDC" and the page on which you signed the petition popped right to the top of the search list. When I clicked on it, the page that came up just had "Nancy IDC" on it.
And thank you!
