So how's everyone doing? I am having some minor skin problems and I'm wondering if anyoneelse is having issues weeks after rads are over? I had no skin problems during rads at all, then 3-4 weeks after rads ended I started getting very itchy skin and a rash on that breast. PCP gave me steroid cream, which took care of it, but everytime I try to stop the cream the rash and itching comes back! It's been 6 weeks now since the rash fist appeared.

julia2,
May need to see a dermatologist.
-
julia2, is it possible that it is a yeast infection?
-
Dutchgirl,
I have no idea if it could be that. Not an area I typically associate with those, LOL

Hi,
Happy New Year's Day!!!! January 5th, I'll continue with (PT).
-
Happy New Year Teka and All! Let's hope 2011 is a better year for us!
-
Happy New Year to all my Rad sisters. Here's to better days in 2011.
-
Happy New Years all. I'm 8 weeks out and still can see pinkness although no discomfort. When I went back for my 6 week check, I was told I was supposed to be putting on Vitamin E oil everyday. I think when I walked out that last day I conveniently forgot any post-radiation instructions.
-
Hi!
I am still having (PT), and getting edema in breast.
-
Hi Teka,
I saw my oncologist last week and got a good result on my 6 month post chemo blood test. Yay. My tumor marker is an acceptable number. Anyway, when she examined me she said something about how she might have to refer me for PT, I assume for the edema in my radiated breast. I had a BMX so I can compare radiated to non radiated breasts. The radiated side is slighly swollen, but it doesn't hurt or bother me. Do you have any info about this, meaning when should we be concerned? And how often do you go for massage and can you see a difference? And does it hurt?? Thanks for any info you have.
-
Hey, how is everyone doing? Teka, sorry you are having problems. I don't have any advice, but to me it sounds like truncal lymphedema, which can happen after radiation. It sounds like you are already getting physical therapy, but make sure they know lymphedema could be the problem. You might want to check that thread for more information on LE therapy techniques.
Blessings

Hi!
My radiation oncologist started me on (PT) for an hour twice weekly, to remove edema, scar tissue, and prevent heavy breast. No pain, and by far the most enjoyable BC treatment. However, the compressure comfort bra by Bellisse for truncal lymphedema ($275.00 paid by health insurance) is to big, and I was told by distributor that I cannot exchange bra for correct size. This isn't a custom made bra. I should be sent to a store to try on different sizes of the bra, instead of (PT) center taking measurements and ordering the bra. Hard to get right fit. If necessary I'll contact the Bellisse company and health insurance. Always something.

Hello ladies, it's been awhile since I have stopped in but I do have a question. Has anyone here been experiencing any pain post radiation? I really started noticing it this week mainly around the incision areas?
-
Dawn46,
No pain.
-
Hi everyone,
Thanks Teka and Shelley for sharing info about edema and lymphedema. Some good news is that I flew from Los Angeles to Seattle at Thanksgiving and to Portland, OR at Christmas and had no problems. I had been concerned about lymphedema after BMX and rads, but nothing happened. That was a relief. Teka, I hope you can get a replacement bra soon. Sorry to hear about the hassle.
Dawn, my BMX incisions don't hurt, but my port incision does. I figured it was because they did surgery there twice (placement and removal). It's been almost 6 months and is finally feeling better. It hurt mostly at night at bedtime. I found that rubbing it gently seemed to help. I'm sorry your incisionis painful.
I am continuing to find it important to do gentle stretching exercises with my arms every day. My rad onc said women can tend to favor the arm on the radiated side and not use it, and that then they loose the full use of their arm. He also said that the incisions for a MX want to tighten up so we need to resist this with stretching. I can definitely feel tightness when I start stretching, but after 10 minutes or so the slight pain goes away. I do these stretches on my bed, so it's hard to find an excuse not to do them!!
-
Dawn46 and sespebadger,
I still have a chemo port, with a tightening up feeling at the lymph node incision, and lumpectomy incision, and do exercises at home along with (PT).
-
I had my radiation tattoos removed yesterday with a laser treatment. I know they were small, but they bugged me. It wasn't painful. Hopefully it will only take one treatment, but it could take another. Has anyone else done this?
-
rcca,
Radiation techs and I had a hard time finding my radiation tattoos.
-
Glad to hear about the laser treatment, rcca. One of mine is right in the middle of my chest and definitely shows above almost every top I wear. It bugs me. Good to know I could get rid of it if I wanted to.
-
Sespebadge, my port scar still hurts and I had it out at the end of October. I have to to rub mine, too, several times a day to make it feel better, it is sort of a sharp twinge. I hope it will feel better with time.
I'm not worried about the tattoos, they are so small they look like freckles to me. I don't think anyone notices them, I hardly do.
Be well!
-
I was looking at my tattoos today, and thinking that if I ever wanted to wear a low cut top, the one in the centre of my chest would be visible. But I think that it looks bigger to me, because I know it's there. I'm sure that if I ever did wear a low cut top (not very likely) it would just look like a freckle. A blue freckle, but what the heck. It never occurred to me to have it removed. Good for you rcca, if it bothers you, get rid of it!
Dawn46 I don't have any pain, just a little stiffness from time to time. I try to use my left arm as much as I can, sometimes I even forget that I had surgery and rads.
Teka, sorry that you are having trouble. What a bother about the special bra, I hope that things get sorted out for you.
Sespebadger, I flew from Vancouver to Bermuda in October, and had no problems at all with swelling or edema. I feel very fortunate. It was on my mind a lot, though.
-
Thanks everyone for your responses. I was having the shooting pains, I figure maybe it's just the nerves healing....
-
Dawn46, I also have had the shooting pains. Not very often and haven't had them for a while now. I think it is just nerves healing.
But what I have had recently and am wondering if any one else has experienced this. It has been almost 6 months post op for me (with only a lumpectomy) and almost 3 months post rads. Everything healed nicely and I had been feeling great. That is until a few days ago, it seems out of the blue my whole left side (the side with lumpectomy and radiation) from under my arm to my rib cage particularly my back, is very sore and tight. It has not stopped me from working thanks to aspirin, Not sure what to think. Has anyone else had this problem? Just trying to make sense of everything.
-
Marie2,
Maybe you're having a tightening up feeling from radiation.
-
Marie2, have you been continuing with your stretching exercises? I had a similar issue, and when I mentioned it to my rad onco at my two month follow up, he said that it is important to keep stretching in order to help your cells repair themselves.
-
Dawn46 & Marie2 ~ I was originally on the Sept rads but it got postponed to Oct. Finished rads on Dec 1st and I still feel discomfort under my arm on SNB side. I'm 5 months post surgery (partial mast). I feel like there's a small quail egg under my arm at times and the breast is still very tender. My left arm is only getting about 90% range of motion and every time I raise my L arm up, it pulls everywhere. Definitely not the same as pre-rads.
Do you ladies still have slight swelling?
-
Thanks Ladies, It helps to know that what I am experiencing is normal for us.And it is most helpful to be able to bounce things off you in order to make sense of things. I will continue stretching and if it still bothers me I will mention it to my onc when I go in March. Hope everyone has a pain free (or a less painful) day.
-
DiamondGirl,
What I thought was swelling, was edema. Radiation side effects seem to appear long after last radiation treatment.
-
Marie2-I have the same affected area. I just noticed today when I took off my bra that there was a small discharge stain in the position of where my nipple would touch. I will definitely be calling the doctor on Monday. It would be nice not to think that every little symptom or pain could be a recurrance. I have searched around on other forums reading and some of the ladies had to have pockets drained.
-
Dawn46 Today seems to feel a little better. I just keep stretching and I also ordered a compression sports bra to see if that will help.I will try wearing it to bed. I also watched the videos on self massage and there were some on youtube about exercises to do. I will keep my eye on it and if it is still a problem will talk to onc when I go in March. I would definitely get the discharge checked out but nipple discharge can be a very common thing so don't worry until you see what the dr says. I know it is easier said than done, but try.
