screening for those of us w/bilat mx
I just had an acquaintance diagnosed with a recurrence years after a bimx. She found the lump herself. Like her, I've been told by my doctors that the only screening I can get is manual, a few times a year. Does anyone have a different screening program? I've been told the MRI is too sensitive and I'll have to deal with false positives, mamms are out (I have implants) and thermography doesn't work, and there are no blood tests. Is this what you've been told? Thanks!

I had a BMX and my oncologist has recommended MRI's once a year for now. He said it was probably "overkill" but he wanted to play it safer since I'm "young". I will have to ask him his thoughts on false positives.

Also had BMX, chemo, on Arimidex(started 9/10). (I'm 59). Just saw my onc for the first time since surg. She only mentioned coming every 3 months for a physical exam. Didn't say anything about MRI or other studies in the future. Will have to ask her about future plans for follow up..........

I have also been told it would be manual type check ups. That seems so insufficient to me and freaks me out. I can't imagine being relaxed and OK with that, but I guess I will have to learn to deal with that when the time comes. I wish there was a better way to really keep a watch on us.

My CS told me that a recurrenece of cancer in the breast tissue would not be difficult to find as there is so little breast tissue left post D mastectomies. He has me come in twice a year for a physical exam. He says a recurrence is obvious very quickly as it would be right under the skin,,,easy to see and to feel, generally spotted by women themselves. I hope he's right.....the Hospital staff dubs him 1/2 of the "dream team" in conjunction with my PS.

Same here. Physical exam twice a year for two years, than once a year after that, nothing more. I wish there was.

They did a "baseline" mammogram of my implant(I had to have one removed, so there is literally nothing on that side to mammo) after I was finished with treatment and recon. Now they just examine the heck out of my "breasts", etc. when I go in for my twice-yearly checkups with the oncologist. I also do BSE's myself each month. I figure it can't hurt.
