Tweedy, there have been a few women who've come through this board who've been diagnosed with BC after a tissue analysis following a breast reduction, but I've never seen any stats on how often that happens.

    Beesie,

Have you had a chance to look at the recent UCLA study re: radiation. Interested in your opinion.

Just wanted ro add that since Dec. 28, 2011, there is an Oncotype DX Breast Cancer Assay for DCIS.  This is different from the test of the same name to help recognize those with IBC that will benefit from chemo.  This will help those with DCIS, and their doctors, to decide if they will benefit from radiation or whether the risk is higher than their low risk of recurrence.

Miricurt, the Oncotype DX assay is helpful for lumpectomy patients, but not for those who have had MX and are trying to decide about radiation, unfortunately.  I know b/c I discussed this with several docs and was told it was not applicable to postMX DCIS patients with close margins who are debating rads.

    Beesie,

Great posts. I think an important point that you bring up with respect to rads and mx is surgery, and what it reveals, may change a preliminary treatment plan. Biopsy results are a starting point but I think pathology after surgery drives treatment recommendations in the end.

Beesie - I realize that this is an old thread, but you described my situation perfectly.

I had DCIS with a microinvasion of IDC.

Fortunately, I had done my research, and I knew that while having a BMX/recon would take care of some issues, it would not be until the SNB AND the final path report were in that I would know exactly what treatment I needed.

I ended up with no lymph node involvement, and clear margins all around. But it could have been  a very different story, even though I DID choose BMX.

Thank you for being so informative and willing to share here!

You are right, Dancetrancer, the Oncotype DX BC Assay for DCIS is unfortunately for newly diagonosed DCIS that is treated with local incision alone and with or without tamoxifen therapy.  I don't find much on these threads about this testing so I wonder if many women are taking advantage of it to find out their scores and see whether their risk for recurrence or IBC is low enough as to not be worth the risk of RT.  Maybe this is because they are not made aware of it.  As most of us know, we have to be prepared to dig for ourselves at times to see what advantages is out there for us.

Absolutely miricurt!  I wanted that test really bad, but alas, it was of no help to me.  However if I had had a lumpectomy for DCIS only, you can bet I would have been really pushing to get that test done...would have loved to avoid rads.  I am a big believer in digging in and being an advocate for yourself...no one cares about your health as much as you do!
