First scans tomorrow

Hi Ladies,

I'm a little freaked (okay a LOT freaked). My first scans are tomorrow (pet/ct with results on Thursday). I finished chemo A/C x4 2 wks. apart and taxotere x 4 2 wks. apart in October and finished 34 rounds of rads. on Dec. 6. So this is my 6 wk. out appt.  I'm popping xanax like pez (is this okay to do before scans??) So many of you have offered advice and wisdom already, and I appreciate it. I really don't know how to do this!!

Rachel

Hopefully you will find out that everything is clean...remember that scans can bring good news just as much as bad news.   You are lucky that you are able to have these scans...I just finished rads in December, and my onc says there will be no scans unless I have symptoms of some sort.  Having a scan when you have a symptom you're worried about would be much more stressful I think, than having one when you feel fine.

I usually take a Xanax before a PET/CT or an MRI just to keep me from getting too claustrophobic.  It won't affect the scans.

Let us know how the tests worked out.

Hi Rachel1...Take a breath...first scans are a little rough only because you don't know what to expect...I had my MRI on Friday - in 16 months, it is scan #13 - PET/CT/MRI.  It makes no difference...the waiting for the results is still the same scanxiety.

    Here's to good results!

    Hugs....LowRider

    Hi Rachel,

I'm thinking of you and hoping for good news! I'm finishing up 33 rads in a couple of weeks, but my onc refuses to do any followup tests - no scans, no markers, nothing! Unless I come to her with a pain or other problem. Haven't decided how I feel about that yet, or if I want to change oncs...

Results: All is well. The dr. talked to my husband this morning and the scans showed nothing. Phew...I wasn't suppose to hear until tomorrow when I have my appts. with the onc. and radiologist. But I was a basket case. You guys helped so much. I did visualize you all with me. I didn't realize that for a pet I'd be alone in a little room for an hour because I was radioactive. That didn't help my anxiety levels.  Neither did the little tube they stick you in.  Your support has been invaluable. Thank you seems inadequate!!!!

    Hugs,

    Rachel

Woohoo!  Now the silver lining - the added reassurance of walking around with a clean scan in your back pocket!

Good to hear things turned out fine. Like some of the others, my onc will only scan if something is bothering me.  She cited a research study where they compared patients who were scanned every six months against those who were only scanned when symptomatic and stated the rates of diagnosing a recurrence was the same and did't effect outcomes.
