scheduled for surgery and still unsure

Options

Hi everyone!  In December, I was diagnosed with DCIS Stage 0 (Grade 2).  I had difficulty getting a doctor's appointment over the holidays, but when I called M. D. Anderson, I was able to be seen in about a week.  I made the trip to Houston, and was told I need a segmental mastectomy and radiation.  (I had more mammograms and an ultrasound.)  When I discussed it with the doctor and the resident, they both insisted that I did not need a mastectomy.  They said if I was their relative, they would not recommend a mastectomy. (The radiologist at M.D. Anderson and a general surgeon and gyn in my home town said the same thing.)  The spot is 1 and a half cm. There is some comedonecrosis in one of the 2 samples on the pathology report.)  I am scheduled for the partial surgery, but still not quite sure what to do, because I don't like the idea of radiation.  I also fear the emotional response of losing a breast.  My father lost his whole leg in an accident, and I remember seeing him in such sadness throughout his life.  I know losing a leg is much worse, but I think the emotional response may be somewhat similar.  I guess what I need is reassurance.  I know it is my decision, but do many women choose lumpectomy or segmental with radiation?  Should I try to save my breast?  Should I risk radiation? Thanks for your caring input!

I was advised that lumpectomy/radiation was a good option for me. There are studies that have been done that basically say that lump/rads have virtually the same outcome as mastectomy so that is the way I went. I had IDC with DCIS and am now 8 months out. Glad to still have my breast.

Must say, though, if it comes back, off it goes.
