can you describe what truncal LE pain feels like?
Hey guys, I posted on the before/during/after surgery board and worried board so I won't spam here too - but basically I'm trying to figure out what this horrid shoulder/rib/back pain I'm having 1.5 years out from node dissection/mastectomy/reconstruction is. Only swelling seems to be between recon breast and armpit. But pain pain pain. If you have truncal LE pain, could you please describe what and where and how you feel? Thanks!

My fairly mild truncal lymphedema is on the side of my breast towards the armpit. It is more of a tenderness than pain but it hurts when I push on the area. Hang in there.

sushanna, that area is very tender on me too, and if I press on it, very sore, both sides. Thanks.

My truncal LE hurts like a bruised area, but of course, there's no bruise. So not only when I tough it, but if I move a certain way or clothes touch it. Do you wear a bra? That could be an irritant. Also, google Costochondritis. I have that too and may be what you're experiencing.

I hope someone has answers to your questions because I'm in the same boat with you! I have mild truncal & arm LE and I posted about a week ago regarding rib pain but I only received a couple of responses so I'm still trying to figure out what to do?. My breast on the LE/BC side always stays tender as well as the armpit from the SNB but the rib thing is entirley a different beast! It is extremely painful to touch....very tender but also a burning pain and it hurts when I stretch the ribcage such as reaching for something. I'm due for my yearly mammo & sono this month but as of now, I can't go thru with it....there is no way my boob or ribs can handle being crunched and stretched!!! Good luck to y'all and hope we can all find some answers!

Well it sucks. I am 2 years from my double mastectomy with sentinel node dissection and 6 months of CMF chemo.
My breasts are extremely painful, stabbing pains along with my left arm from the lymph nodes being removed.
My onc put me on Ativan for the pain. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. I also take 3 or 4 Advil every 6 hours. I just want to feel better.
My onc is sending me to PT for truncal Lymphedema. I am hoping my insurance will cover it. My employer is giving me a hard time about going.
Sometimes my back hurts too. I also have bad joint pain in my hands, fingers, knees, shoulders, and arms.
-
I am thinking about getting the implants taken out, but my onc isn't sure that will help.
Has anyone else thought about getting theirs takent out?
If so, please e-mail me at boyzbeebs@hotmail.com.
Thanks,
Nancy

I have LE in both arms, trunk, and back. It definitely feels like deep bruising. It also can feel very sore and tight when I have a flare. My skin is hypersensitive and I have a difficult time with many fabrics rubbing against the area from my armpits around to my back. I didn't have reconstruction and have just made the final decision that I never will as I know it will only make my pain worse-and I cant imagine how painful a bra with prosthesis would be so I've chosen the natural look!
Boyzbeebs, Ativan is not a pain medication. It is prescribed for anxiety.

Has anyone tried the spanx for use as a compression garment?
http://www.spanx.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3015048&cp=2992553
My LE therapist recommended it, but, it isn't on the step up speak out site which makes me a little nervous
-
Ativan was first used years ago for something completely different and then was found to be good for anxiety. Go figure! I was given it for an inflammation or something, and I remember mentioning to the doctor that I didn't seem to be as worried any more......hehehehehehehe that was about 30 years ago.
-
Kate, there are a lot of Spanx styles. Be sure to get one that has good coverage of the specific areas you need. Some garments do a better job for the area near the axilla, some for the cleavage -- whatever.
It isn't on the site because none of us have tried it.
Give it a try and let us know how it works for you, and we'll put it on.
Be well!

Thanks Binney, I'll let you know

Kate, I think we talked about "Assets" at Target--I liked them, but too many seams, need to wear inside out--and they're made by Spanx--and run about $20.

I found 2 spanx I'm trying. Holy Cow. What an ordeal, hot flash and trying to get those things on. At least with a lymphedema sleeve you have a glove to help don the sleeve. I'm just happy candid camera wasn't on in the dressing room. One I tried on that is supposed to work as a long camisole and short slip, got twisted up around my neck and started choking me. I'm moving and flopping around trying to find a grip on the thing to get it to go in any direction but my neck, down up I didnt' care, just wanted it off. It was a sight. I'm happy to report I made it home still breathing. I did find one camisole that puts pressure in exactly the right place below my clavicle. Did get a lighter one for the days I'm not as working as streuously since it is a bit more comfortable. They were about 45 a piece. I'll let you know how I think the brand works and wears. I'll try looking at Target too

Kmmd - I, too, had a Marx brothers moment in the dressing room trying to get the damn thing on and then owie, off owie off off!!! I never did find one that worked for me, but it was worth a good laugh after I calmed down. Thank goodness I didn't have to get the attendant to help me.

I think I have mild truncal lymphedema, as well as in my arm and under arm. I didn't realize why my back would hurt. I thought I didn't have surgery there, so why would my back be hurting. My back hurts on the same side. All my pains increase as the day progresses, usually @ 3:00 it starts hurting. My friend who underwent a mx and sentinel node biopsy had pain and swelling at the base of her bra line. Her PS told her it was caused by the intentional cutting of a vein or artery during surgery. Boy, the things they don't tell ya....

I got stuck in a Walmart dressing room trying on a cotton summer top once. It wouldn't go on or off and was stuck at my shoulders around my ears with my arms over my head. I reached a panic point where I couldn't breathe which was silly as my chest was free. I actually twisted enough and got my phone out to call my DH on speed dial to drive over to help me when a seam "eased" and I got it off! I prefer a bit of stretch in my tops please...
I need a constriction top closer to my arm pit on my left side. I guess those "buttons" or pads would be what I would need, but I just can't afford anything. I rub my chest alot....sigh.
-
bookart, I had to laugh later too,
barbe, Just about spit my coffee out on the computer when I read about you hitting speed dial. I just asked DH if he'd have answered that call if I had done that, he said, hmmm, you called and told me you were strangling yourself, hmmm..... I do love that man
-
Oh that is a funny story Barbe1958!!! LOL!!
STEP INTO the compression garments. MUCH easier!
-
Then how do I get them over my ass???? That is almost as wide as my shoulders....
-
Mine is BIGGER than my shoulders I swear..LOL! But it works...really!
-
You ladies have me laughing out loud with your dressing room stories. I dare say my DH would not have come to rescue me....he would laugh his butt off. I also have truncal lymphedema. I keep describing it to my doctors as feeling like I've been beaten with a baseball bat under my arm and next to my breast in the ribs. Some days are better, some are worse. I wonder if it will ever get better?
-
spendygirl, that is the best description, I may have to borrow it. Telling them if feels life someone put a knife under my arm and jammed it through each rib and into my chest is my usual description
