I will have a Glass of Red Wine please!!
Hey girls,
Here's the deal, I exersise almost everyday. I have lost a lot of weight since stopping chemo.
kinda of strange considering I had the ooph and I am now on tamoxifen .Oh well I won't complain about that, it's most likely because I'm afraid to eat anything! Organic spinich, asparagus, Kale, Berries, berries, and more berries!!! Fish, hormon free everything. I am going some where with this I promise. 5000IU-D3 a day and 1200 mg of calcium for bone health. A great one a day supplement, effexor, for those peskey hot flashes, and lots of Juice plus! Oh and the Tamox!
I want fried calimari, with a nice big steak, a ceasur salad, w/ lots of dressing, and the biggest
glass of red wine ever!!!!!! OK, I will for go the food , if I can just have the wine !
What is ok, before I was dx, I really enjoyed my red wine. Now the occasional glass of wine I have with dinner , or with my husband, I can't seem to even enjoy , for fear that I'm harming my body.
My onc and my bs both
told me to drink a glass of wine with dinner, a couple times a week if I want, but why bother if I can't enjoy it. I want to enjoy it without guilt, I feel like I have givin so much up in my life since dx.
We deserve some simple pleasures don't we? I don't like sweets, love coffee, not givin that one up!
I know a lot of studies show no achohol at all, but why would my docs say its ok then.
This seems trivial I know, but Gosh darn, I WANT MY RED WINE!!!!! Guilt free! This is so silly I know ! Its friday, just thought I would get some feed back on this topic.
what do you think? No stats Please, you will force me to have to drink!! LOL
cheers maybe,
Faithful

LOL, your last paragraph was funny, thanks for the laugh! I think a plateful of broccoli with every glass of wine would balance things in your favor. But you do that already, don't you?
-
well, i drink white wine....chardonnay to be exact, it has been all most 9 years,,,,this coming
feb.so far so good. i just live each day....that is about it. i don;'t get too far ahead of myself...and i don;'t look back. my body has recovered from surgery,,,chemo , rads and arimidex. the arimidex was the worst actually, i wish i could help more then i do here on these posts...i come back because i remember clearly feeling so scared...and worried about relapse. but now, i don't . i think each one of us has to figure this all out...my best advice is don't get caught up in stats...or other people's experiences...just do your own life and do one day at a time. enjoy your pleasures...be grateful for the treatment you got....it is the best that is out there at this time. that is all i know. be in the moment.
most important...exercise. walk..run..cycle. move your body; let the healthy cells know you are taking care of them,
take good care

It's called balance. Moderation. I enjoy a drink every once in awhile. Sometimes more than that
Guilt free 100% of the time! (how's that for a stat!)

Okay my reply might be silly but I used to love tofu. I would fish it out and eat it with gusto with my miso soup, chomp on it with my pad thai. But since my diagnosis even though there really is no direct scientific evidence linking it to bc and the dietician that I saw just said to eat it in moderation, I find no pleasure in eating it anymore! Hubby and I went to a japanese restaurant and I tried to eat the little floating bits in the miso soup and I couldn't finish it! I felt I was eating cancer and just couldn't.

I believe it's the latest study re. alcohol & bc, and it points towards alcohol only being a problem for ILC -- not IDC. Deanna

Faithful......
Hear you. I just polished off half a rack of lamb, roasted veggies, spinach.......with wine.
I don't think you are unreasonable about wanting to live. Living is about more than eating food to exist. Have the best meal ever. With wine.
Otherwise, you will be wondering about what's the point?
The studies on wine have been done on women pre hormonal therapy. We don't know for those of us who are doing AIs or Tamoxifen. Drink up and relax.
Also, you don't want to survive BC, only to have heart disease. Drink up!!! And ditch the guilt. Much worse for you than eating the wrong stuff.
This is about a wonderful life going forward. Congrats on all your hard work!!!! - Claire

Agree with bugs - everything in moderation. Gee whiz, why not enjoy a glass of red wine, chocolate or whatever occasionally?

There was some study that said alcohol only became a factor in reoccurance if you had more than three glasses a week. So the increased risk for drinking none compared to the risk of drinking 3 glasses a week were the same.
So, I drink weekends only now. I used to drink every day, but now I have adjusted to three-ish a week. And, like bugs says, I do it 100% guilt free!
I hear you though - sometimes I just want to sit down and eat a plate of bacon and hotdogs! He he.
-
kerry.....lol "plate of bacon and hotdogs?"
-
I agree...I used to obsess over everything I put into my mouth. I have definitely backslid over the holidays, but the cancer nutritionist I saw said that two glasses of wine a week of perfectly fine.
Now, don't go drinking Jack Daniels for breakfast, but other than that, it's AOK.
Bacon and Hotdogs? ewwwwwwww. jk, I realize it was metaphoric. Unless you are chasing it with slugs of wine out of the bottle
All things in moderation, right?
-
I don't remember who suggested the book "Anti Cancer - a new way of life" but it's really a good book and I really recommend it.
P.S he writes that you can drink a glass of red wine daily with your food.
-
claire - half a rack of lamb sounds so good right now. yummy.

I am also holding on to the study that said alcohol is not a risk factor with IDC and had posted that awhile ago. That being said, I still have every glass of wine I really want, but I am much more aware and I no longer drink those extra ones that I really don't care one way or another. I had to stop all alcohol for six weeks for a followup liver enzyme test to see if that was the culprit. Made no difference in the test, infact enzymes went up AND it made no difference in my weight which I was hoping it would because of less calories with no wine. My internist just told me this week................don't get on the scale!!!! I am overweight (have been for years, and worry about that risk factor) but did not gain during treatment or now on Arimidex, staying the same. I am very active and healthy doing tennis, pilates, personal training and water aerobics. I get a walk in too when I find the time. So.......................I am still getting on the scale, but not beating myself up and I am still drinking my wine

Before my Dx I usually had a glass (or two) of wine, a beer, or a bourbon close to every day. Then suddenly felt as though I shouldn't have any, and didn't end up enjoying it at all because of that. Then I saw this on another website, and decided it was OK to have a glass of wine every other day or so, if I had a folic acid pill afterward.
http://www.breastcancer.org/tips/nutrition/ask_expert/2006_11/question_13.jsp
It's help me ENJOY my glass of wine now, at least the two or three I allow myself a week. I don't know if this is actually cancelling out the alcohol, but it works for me!
I had also read somewhere else that researchers thought the problem with alcohol had to do with how alcohol was metabolized with folic acid in the liver, so there may be something to this.

I am coming up on 5 yrs. and I drink white wine guilt free. Sometimes weeks go by and I have none. Other times I drink a glass each night for several days in a row. Every once in a while I drink 2 glasses. I rarely drank before I was diagnosed. I'm not sure it makes much of a difference. I know of several non-drinking people who ended up with breast cancer. I also know people who did not drink and had recurrences.
-
This disease has messed up our lives enough, so drink wine if you want to - I certainly am, although not as much as I used to.
The secret of happpiness is: Everything in moderation - including moderation!
-
Before bc I had a glass of red wine most nights. I enjoyed it and thought I was doing good for my heart too boot! I would worry too much to enjoy it if I tried to have it that often now, but like others have mentioned, if I keep it under 3 glasses per week, I can do so guilt free. I love to pour a glass of wine on Sunday afternoons and sip away while I cook a big dinner. So I still do if I feel like it. And sometimes I won't have any at all for a few weeks. I don't believe denying myself to the point of feeling deprived can really be helpful.
-
My problem is we are retired and there are five Saturday nights in a week, so that makes it a little tough. We are out to dinner way to much or at parties, but....................I also fill my week with all kinds of physical exercise and I believe that balances some of the risk factors. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
-
Faithful...enjoy that glass of red wine
I do

After my discharge I had no wine for at least 5 months. I could not, as I thought I was feeding the cancer. I have had a couple of glasses of wine over the holidays and without too much guilt. I think I will have it once in a while when going out for dinner or something like that. When you have your glass of wine enjoy and relax.
-
I drink Chardonnay and enjoy it almost every day. Since I am Stage IV I can't see any reason to deny myself this pleasure. I don't feel any guilt or that I am taking years off my life because I like to drink wine. Perhaps I am in denial but I have learned that life is really short so I would prefer to live my life without worrying about every little thing I put in my body. I have asked my breast surgeon about this issue for years (I used to see her for non-cancerous fibroid cysts) and she has always told me that there is no data to support that alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer. As Thegoodfight said, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I have a small glass of white while I'm cooking dinner and at least 1, ocassionally 2 glasses of red with dinner almost every night.
Sometimes I have an alcohol free day. I love cooking but really don't enjoy it as much if I'm not having a sip every now and then!
For the first 6 months after dx I was pretty worried about everything I ate or drank . After that I just went back to normal and have enjoyed over 18 years of cooking, entertaining and yes drinking more or less what I like!

Hi Ladies,
looks like we are all in agreement. Enjoy a glass of wine, GUILT FREE!!!. My sister came over for dinner tonight, Thanks to all my dear bc sisters, I think for the first time since my dx, I sipped` chardonnay, with no guilt. We had a fabulous dinner, and a great bottle of wine! I was not thinking about anything, but just living in the moment!
LOVE TO ALL OF YOU, EVERYDAY I SURRENDER MORE, AND IT'S GETTING BETTER!!
