anyone starting chemo in Nov 2005

Lots of hugs Debbie. I know getting your head shaved was a very emotional step. You have a great attitude not to let this beat you.
Good luck today to Kaye and Lana. Check back in when you can.
Liz. One down. Take your meds. Hope you are doing ok today.
Yep, the neulasta shot is so expensive. I guess I am lucky because my insurance is covering it and I just pay a $30co pay for 4 shots. I get one 24 hours after chemo.
I have had the insomnia also. Matter of fact Sunday night I was so tired watching tv and went up to bed about 11 and just laid there staring at the ceiling until 3am. Then my daughter got up and I went to lay with her. Went back to bed at about 4 and slept pretty good until 7. (no school yesterday). Surprisingly I wasn't tired yesterday. I did take the Tylenol PM and it knocked me out last night. Had a good night sleep.
Kim -
Kim, I can relate to the staring at the ceiling....I have become pretty good friends with the ceiling in my bedroom. I stare at it often, as sleep is hard to come by. At first it was stress related, then discomfort from surgery and then insomnia from the chemo steroids (I guess). Now it's just plain mind issues. I have taken Tylenol PM a few times and am able to get to sleep, but I still wake up and have trouble getting back to sleep. I am going to discuss this with my onc on Thursday. Hopefully, she can help me take care of the sleep problems.
Have a nice day, Jill -
Hi Ladies,
My husband made a website for me when we found out that i had BC for my friends and family but this is what I just posted on my site.
Haven't been here in a couple of days so i'm getting reading to read the post to see what i have missed. Hope everyone is doing well.
Let me start off by saying that it really SUCKS (sorry). It started falling out on Sunday when I would run my hands through my hair I would get about 5 strands. Didn't take a shower that day b/c i thought alot more would come out!! Couldn't really sleep that night I kept worrying about finding a bunch of hair on my pillow when I woke up. When i did wake up that was the first thing I checked. I did have some but not what I thought.
I went and had my Muga scan done and went to Kohls to buy some Dangly earrings.
Worried about my hair all day and kept running my fingers through it . It really sucked!
I knew I needed to do it last night because today would have been worse. So I had a few MELTDOWNS before I finally got brave enough for Aaron to do it .
The girls helped they cut off all the big chucks first and they weren't being shy!!!
I cried a couple of times I was trying to be brave in front of them but it was hard , they understood Megan gave me a hug and in her sweet little voice she said mommy it's alrigh,t you will still look cute!!! They all started saying it then. And then Lindsey said Mom this is what I did to my hair!!! It was funny. We all laughed.
Aaron as brave and strong as he is got out his trimmer and evened it all out. It is about 3/8 of an inch. Sidney was like Wow Dad I didn't know you were such a good hair cutter!!! That was funny too.
The rest will fall out in the next few days.
After it was over I took a shower put on my makeup and some earrings and went downstairs. Everyone smiled and said I looked pretty. (right!!)
Later I was on the couch and Lindsey walked by and just blurted out you still look like mom but with shorter hair!!! I thought that was sweet.
So now I have this part of my journey over with. And let me tell you this is the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life!!!
I am up for whatever the next thing will be.
Rhonda -
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STACEY!!!!
HOPE YOU ARE HAVING A GREAT DAY!
RHONDA -
Hi Girls,
I forgot to tell you my 2nd treatment was scheduled for today but the building it's in had a water break on the 3rd floor and there office which is on the first floor got flooded. So my appointment is tomorrow at 10:45. I hope it goes as well as first. I'm nervous that the 2nd one's going to be my bad one!!
Anyway,
Liz, I hope you are feeling good. i also was more scared of my Bi-lateral mast. then I was the Chemo. It wasn't bad if it wasn't for the hair.
Lana, Hope you do well today! I know you will be just fine. it sounds like you are ready. i did the same thing but unfortunatly I ate all the High fat items in my house!!! I did not lose my appetite for sure.
Lynne, My doctor gave me Lunesta to sleep it works really well. How are you doing? How is your hair??
Debbie, I'm sorry to here about your Hubby's dog. That is just awful!! How are you doing since you shaved your hair?? we were due to lose ares the same time. Are you feeling any better about it? I shaved mine last night but not all the way I have like 3/8 of an inch left. I hate it!!!
Kim, How is Taxotere. I start taking that after Ac. Did you have to take Ac?? Do you know what the difference is between Taxol and Taxotere? I thought it was the same just apprieviated.
Wendy,
I'm glad you are doing so well . How's the hair thing with you going?? My husband wanted to shave his head to and I said NO WAY one person in the house is enough!! (YUCK) I would have cried too.
Kaye, Is your Port feeling better yet?? Mine took about a week I think. Hope your treatment is good today!!
I wish everyone piece of mind today!!! Have a great day

Day #2 - Feeling much much better today. I think I didn't take my meds soon enough when I got home last night. I wasn't suppose to take the decadron until 8 PM so I tried to wait until then and starting getting sick at 5 pm. I was sick every hour until 10 pm. The meds didn't work after I was already sick. The only one that helped was the ativan I took at 10 PM and it knocked me out along with the nausua so today when I woke up I was fine (plus I had the best night sleep in 2 months since my diagnosis). Today I went back to get my nulasta shot and the oncology nurse told me to take the compozine earlier next time before the decadrone so I will try that next time and hopefully won't get sick. I have been using the biotene products, toothpaste, mouthwash and the gum which is good for the taste in my mouth and settles my stomach. Have also been trying to drink lots and lots of water. Haven't had much of an appetite, just have a taste for crackers and cheerios. My oncologist's nurse said she wasn't too concerned about the eating but that I had to drink lots of fluids so that has been my main priority. Shooting for 80 oz of water a day. Have an appointment Friday afternoon to get my head shaved and wig fitted and cut. I decided I didn't want to wait until it falls out. Hope everything went well for all the ladies who had their first treatment today. I'll be thinking of you. Liz

Hi Ladies-
Made it through my first treatment just fine...feeling a little off tonight (some would probably say I'm a little off anyway!), but no big deal -- hoping that continues!
I can't say it enough -- you are all such an inspiration! All your tips have been great too! Thank you!!
Chins up!
Lana -
Glad you checked in Lana. Yeah, I know about that off feeling. Hope you get a good night sleep tonight. Liz lots of hugs for you. Drink drink drink.
Rhonda hugs about the hair. My friend buzzed mine. I am sort of getting used to looking in the mirror. My kids (9,6,2) are getting used to it I think. I expect the rest to slowly fall out. I like wearing my hats. As for the Taxatere this is the first chemo drug I am taking. My biggest side effect is the fatigue. It comes on days 3-6 after treatment. I get bone and musle pain which could be from a few things like the neulasta shot. But that goes away. Not sure of the Taxatere and Taxol.
Hope everyone has a good night sleep.
Kim -
Good Morning everyone ~ Well I made it through the first treatment. Had some problems with a reaction to the
Adriamycin, which held me up a couple of hours. So had to spend 6 1/2 hours there. It wore me down.
I had terrible headaches, and spaced out last night. Might have been from the medications for the reaction. I didn't sleep well. Did anyone notice a foul smell from their treatment after coming home. Don't know if it is just my imagination or if my body is giving off toxic smells.....lol
I go for the Neulasta shot today at 10:45am. I think I am ready to drive, and then have to go get blood work every week on Mondays. My next treatment will be December 20th
Rhonda~ yes my port is feeling much better. They thought yesterday that the port was leaking and that was why I was having a reaction, but after finding a vein to finish up treatment. I still got the reaction when she did the push on the Adriamycin, so they figured it was just the treatment.
Couldn't post last night, was way to out of it.....No brain.....lol
Hugs.....Kaye -
Kaye: Sorry you had a hard time. Don't forget to drink a lot today and tomorrow and the next day.
I don't think I have ever noticed a smell, but I know nothing tasted very good to me and so I didn't have much of an appetite the first five or so days after treatment.
I hope all of you are well and happy you have your first treatment safely behind you. This seems such a long road to me right now, but I tell myself I am getting rid of any stray cells that might want to hold on and that sure is worth it.
Anna -
I had a MUGA scan yesterday, port surgery, and first chemo treatment (A/C). Whew! Today I have soreness at the port site (right under the collarbone) and a little queasy/ shaky/headache. Doc says I can't really do stuff with my arm for a couple of days.
The first nurse who tried to do my IV on the back of my hand before surgery messed it up and caused me horrific pain, I finally started sobbing and the other nurse came in and told her to pull out! The second try by the other nurse was nothing at all (different spot). Ahhh what a relief. I normally don't have a problem with getting IV's, injected, whatever but that was excruciating!
I received my chemo in my onc's chemo room, it is small and cozy with some great recliners, TV, even an electrical fireplace that looks so real! He also has great views out of the big windows.
My treatments are weekly so I don't get the big doses at one time like the 3 week cyclers. I don't know yet how this will affect my side effect experiences. Doc says it makes them better tolerated. However, I have to drive 30 mi. each time, so I may switch to 3-week cycles at some point.
Right now I am getting sick to my stomach so I think I'll go take the compazine.....hoping to get on the treadmill today even for 10-15 minutes or longer if I can handle it. Drinking lots of water! Am I missing anything?
I have gained a lot of knowledge from your posts and appreciate each and every one. Have a good day, all!
Laura -
Kaye, I am sorry you had a hard time with your first treatment. Was thinking about you yesterday.
Laura, wow you had a lot done in one day. I bet you are both glad that the first treatment is done.
hugs,
Kim -
Yes Kim, I am so glad this first treatmement is done. Will know what to expect next time.
I went and got my Neulasta shot today. She gave me a book to read about it, but I haven't done it yet. So exhaused that I went to sleep when I got home.
I am extremely tired. I asked about the foul smell that I keep thinking I am smelling from my body...lol...took a good shower too.....the nurse said that sometimes happens with Cyclophosphamide. Since I told her while taking the treatment yesterday that my mucus membranes inside my nose were burning, she said that is just one of the side effects of that drug. She said I will probably have this bad smell for awhile....yuk.....it's like when you have a bad cold and your sinuses burn and smell dusty. Weird.......
Hope everyone is doing well..........
Hugs...Kaye -
Kaye, so sorry you had a rough first day. Hope today is much better. Day #3, I am feeling pretty good. Went to work for 4 hrs. Only took the decadrone and azemat this morning, haven't needed the compozine or adivan yet. Not much of an appetite. Seem to want to eat cheerios, crackers and toast. Will try to have something else for dinner. Am drinking lots of water. Still trying to hit that 80 oz a day. Am walking around with 33 oz bottles everywhere I go. Not too much problems from the nulasta shot, just a little muscle aches. The biotene gum has also been helpful for keeping my mouth moist and kind of helps with the queezy stomache. I used lysol wipes on everything at my office to keep away the germs and walked around with one in my hand for the doorknobs and handrails. I can't tell you all how much I appreciate the tips I have received on this board. I am trying all of them and many are working very well. Thanks guys.
-
Good Evening everyone. Well, it appears we are all underway with our treatment now. That is a good thing, we are now attacking this, instead of IT attacking us!
I am still drinking tons of water. And feel really good. However, the sleeplessness is very annoying. I am definately taking an ativan tonight. Last night, again awake til 4am, ugh.
I went to a vocational school today, that offers people undergoing treatment free services, and also has a very large wigbank. These wigs are all brand new, and FREE! I brought my girlfriend, (her services were not free, but very cheap) we had facials, and scalp massages, blowdry. I had my haircut really short, the style is cute, very similar to how i wore it a few years ago. So I am ready for it to fall out, this weekend or so. I will buzz it when it starts going.
I picked a wig that looks just like Sharon Osborne. I have always loved her hair, and could never get mine to stick out in the back, not thick enough. But the wig is awesome. My girlfriend and I went to the mall afterwards, and strolled around, then had lunch. I wore the wig, and never felt uncomfortable about it. I looked at my reflection in the store windows and thought it looked pretty good! I also have a longer chin length one, that is like my hair was before cutting it.
pampering ourselves now is a good thing for the spirit. This school was brought to my attention from the Look Good Feel Better program. You should all look into that class, and see what is available in your area. We do deserve to feel good. I am going to go again next week for a parafin treatment and facial, with my mom. I plan to do it once a week!!
Have a good night everyone....hugs and prayers for restful night's sleep to all of us............LynnZ -
Kaye, I am sorry you have to suffer through all this. I think the smell thing would drive me batty! I hope you are feeling better soon.
I just discovered tonight that I have a few mouth sores already. I was eating tacos, of all things. They are under my tongue. I used the Biotene toothpaste and rinse and don't feel them now. But, I guess I will have to try to stay away from spicy/acidic foods etc.
Laura -
Laura, I was just sitting here reading posts, and realized I have a sore on the inside of my lip! I am going to get the Biotene tomorrow. Does it taste bad? Is that the stuff that numbs your mouth? I have read about it before, and just forgot to get it. Thanks for the reminder!
-
Deb: thanks for the info. I did not try aleve after the neulasta. Staying on top of it must be the trick. Before I knew why I was having pain, it was so intense, advil would not kick it so I went to vicadin and did not stop for 2 days.
I have my next chemo tomorrow! It is a little hard, since like you Jill, I feel awesome and so normal again.
Today though I started my period. My onc said Chemo would take care of these things. He also said I can not wear tampons for risk of infection. Has anyone had a period on chemo? Let me know...
Anyway, good life (& luck)... -
Lynn,
The Biotene mouthwash doesn't taste bad. I think it was mildly minty. I have the toothpaste, too. It doesn't foam up like most toothpastes, so that was weird. I also have the dryness relief gel or whatever it is to re-wet your mouth. I didn't like that stuff so well. It tasted really bland and felt strange in my mouth. But then, if my mouth is really dry, I might feel differently about it!!
I am interested to know what people are drinking to get their 80 oz in. I hate plain water! I was using Crystal Light individual packs for 16.9 oz bottles but it has citric acid in it which is probably not great for mouth sores (plus aspartame, which I am not sure about)...plain water gets old after a while! I'll try to read backposts, too.
Lynn I admire and share your faith in God through this. It is helping me a lot!
Laura -
I had my first round of chemo yesterday. I feel good today. In the hospital, thru the iv, but before the chemo, I was given antinausea medication. I have not felt nausea at all. I took my first antinausea pill today and I am scheduled to take one more tonight. I fell pretty good. Thanks everyone for sharing.
-
Laura, I have been struggling with getting in my water intake, too. Plain water just doesn't taste good to me right after treatment. I tried the Aquafina flavored water, but that intensified the icky taste in my mouth. So, I ate a LOT of watermelon!! Is that cheating? Then I "drank" boullion-probably not a good thing because of the salt content.
I had to giggle at whoever said they were eating tacos when they got their first mouth sore. I was eating spicy stir-fry! ACK!
Anyone getting weird cravings? I just can't seem to get enough of SALT. Then yesterday, I really wanted cream of broccoli soup?!?!
Ok, another (embarrassing) question...anyone taking Kytril? I was given that after my horrid reaction to compazine, and Kytril seems to make me...umm...really digest my food well....do you know what I mean? Is that a common reaction?
Bald women of the world unite!!
PS-hubby shaved his head for me last night. Aww......
Big hugs, Debbie -
Hi ladies. This is my first post. Like LynnZ, I'm on my 14th day post first chemo treatment. Today is the first day I feel normal again (if that is possible). The antinausea/vomiting meds kept me in a fog for the first five days. I spent most of my time sleeping. Had some cognitive side effects causing me to be very forgetful.
I started to feel better, then on Thanksgiving night I was in such pain my husband had to rush me to hospital. As it turns out I had a reaction to one of the meds (5-FU) that caused an abnormality in my red blood cells. The pain was so intense I was sent home on oxycodone. I slept for two days then started to feel progressively better. The doctor said he can adjust the dose, appearantly the first dose was too high for my system...go figure. I have a doctors appointment next week and we will discuss future treatments. Thank God I am only scheduled to receive 3 treatment of this particular drug.
BTW- my hair is starting to fall out. Considering all I've been through (lumpectomy, re-lumpectomy, port insertion, chemo, drug reaction, etc..) I'm not sure how to feel about hair loss. My very supportive husband has shaved his head just to show me "it's only hair". He plans to keep it shaved until my hair grows back out. Our 7 year old son told me "even when your hair fall out, you will still be my beautiful mommy". Family and co-workers keep reassuring me by saying "We want you with us, who cares about the hair". I already bought a wig, couple of hats and scarves and I plan to buzz this weekend (if not sooner). We'll see what happens.
I am touched and inspired by all your stories and posts. Together we can get through the bumps in the road until we have completed this journey. Thank you all for sharing so much of your self. God Bless you.
Hugs, hugs, hugs to all. -
Welcome, Odalys. Sorry you had such a hard time with that drug.
Some of you might think this strange, but I find it easier to drink my water hot, as if it were a cup of tea. It is very comforting that way and I don't seem to notice the taste. I get a whole lot of water down that way and there are no additives.
Anna -
Day #4, didn't take any anti-nausua meds or any other meds today. Went to work for 4 hrs. I found drinking tea soothed my stomach. I know I'm not suppose to drink too much green tea but my oncologist told me it was OK to have one cup and I was able to handle it much better than coffee. I am also having some weird cravings. It's almost like when you are pregnant. I seem hungry all the time. I guess it's the nausua and food seems to help. Anyway, came home from work and just had to have an egg and peanut butter sandwich. I have been eating a lot of peanut butter. I buy mostly organic foods so I guess it's not so bad for me. Have not had any desire whatsoever for fruits and veggies which is what I usually try to eat a lot of. I see why they say women gain weight while on chemo. So far the biotene gum has been working the best to settle my stomach in between snacks. Also, hubby shaved his head today and I go in tomorrow afternoon to get mine shaved and my wig fitted and styled. Don't know what I would do without you guys. You are great.
-
Hello all. Today has been pretty decent (1 day past A/C #2), tired but no nausea and slept very well last night. All blood counts going down but still within range. CEA is up to 14.7--onc says no panic but she just can't explain it. Non-smoker, 3 time up since October. Banged my arm and wound up with 4" square helacious bruise--must be more careful. But, that's the internal fight. Externally, still haven't lost the stubble and looking good. Hope all of you are fairing well.
Hugs to all you brave warriors.
Nancy -
Good morning Ladies,
I feel good still. Seems weird to have nearly no side effects, I have been started to wonder if this stuff is working on me????? weird huh? I know it must be, and I am just healthy otherwise, so keeping symptoms at bay, maybe? I am waiting and prepared for my hair to fall out. Scalp feels weird, sensitive when i scratch it, but not any hairloss yet. I have noticed in these posts several husbands have shaved their heads too....how nice, and supportive. I am certain, my husband would have too, as he kept his hair so short, it was nearly shaved. (I lost him to a major heart attack, 22months ago)
Wendy, I have completed pre-surgery chemo, 12 weeks Herceptin/navelbine, and got my period once so heavy that I thought I was going to bleed to death, and then not again during it. And with the A/C, only having 1 treatment so far, I am due this week for it, but no sign yet. Strange what this does to the systems.
Laura & Debbie, About the water intake. I read a long time ago, (hints related to dieting) that the more water you drink, the more water your body craves. If body learns to have a lot of water supply, you will automatically crave, and get thirsty more often. So pump the water!!! I am still on about 4 20 oz bottles a day, sometimes 5. I have been alternating between plain and Berry flavored aquafina. I prefer the flavored water, room temperature. I also enjoy flavored soda water, sort of feels like it is cleaning my mouth, as it fizzes!
Suave, glad to see back. Congrats, 1 down. Keep drinking and take your anti nausea meds on time. I was told to take mine for 3 days after, Decadron and Zofran, morning and night. then in between if needed the compazine. and day 4 & 5, just the companzine. I did just what I was told, and was fine the whole time.
Odalys, Welcome. So sorry to hear you spent Thanksgiving in pain, in the hospital. Was it an overdose of the 5-FU? that is awful. I havent heard much about that particular med. Is that along with other chemo drugs too?
Nancy, you mentioned bloodcounts being low. I expect mine to be too, when I go next Thursday. During my Herceptin weekly treatments, I got copies of all my blood reports, and monitored them. I am not familiar with CEA. What is that?
Have a great weekend everyone. Hugs prayers to all...LynnZ -
Welcome Odalys. Sorry you had to join us, but you will get a lot of information and support from these wonderful people.
Wendy, my onc. told me the Taxatere will probably eliminate my periods. Well, 2 days after first treatment I got my period. That is also when the Taxatere side effects were kicking in. Then 1 week after 2nd treatment right on schedule I get it. This time the bleeding is much heavier. I kind of got scared when I saw the flow. It is almost gone now, but it is annoying.
Lynne that is great that your vocational school does that. When I called about the Look Good feel Good program there wasn't anything close to where I live.
I still have some peach fuzz on the top of my head. My girlfriend, my stylst is coming over today to see what we can do about the wig I got. Needs to be shaped. My hubby wanted to shave his head but I told him it was not necessary. He has little to begin with and I don't know if his will grow back, but I KNOW MINE WILL.
hugs...Kim -
LynnZ, I wanted to tell you I am really sorry about your husband. I am sure that was hard to deal with, and then you are dealt THIS to deal with too!
It sounded like he was a wonderful husband.
On a different subject...
Does anyone have a constantly runny nose from AC?
Mine just won't stop!!!! ARGH.
Debbie -
Good morning. Hope everyone had a good night's rest. I did thanks to Ambien, keeps me sleeping the entire night (8 hours). No more waking up 2 and 3 times a night.
Anna, Kim, and Lynn thanks for the welcome. I can't say I'm glad to be here but I am glad to be able to talk with you all. We would have never met otherwise.
Lynn, I'm not sure if the reaction I had to the 5-FU was an overdose. The physician that treated me at the hopsital called it "hypersensitivity". (The pain was so bad I felt like I had no skin and my nerves were raw. My whole body felt bruised). The nurse practitioner said the dose was probably too high and they will have to adjust it. I see the Oncologist on Wednesday and by then all the blood work results will be available. I'm hoping he can shed some light on what actually happened, as well as what will happen with this drug. 5-FU is one of three drugs I receive in a cocktail. I need two more treatments of this cocktain and then is off to Taxotere x3.
Kim, have you gained any weight on Taxotere? How are the side effects, any damage to your finger nails?
Talk with you soon. Have a great day everyone. -
Odalys, I have had 2 Taxotere sessions. I also get a neulasta shot 24hours after chemo. The side effects seem to have been the same both times. I am good the day I have treatment, the following day also. Around the 3rd or 4th day the tiredness and fatigue start to settle in. Usually there are 2 days when I can barely get out of bed or off the couch. The bone and muscle pain has been painful for a couple of days also. By the 5 or 6th day I am up to myself. I find I am tired in the evening after a day of doing things. I just have learned to limit my activities when necessary. My blood work has been good so no problems there. I have not seen any changes to my finger nails. My girlfriend gave me stuff to use on my cuticles but I haven't seen any changes.
Kim
