I had TE placed at my BMX. I will be finishing chemo in January. I was hoping to do the exchange by spring. Is it true that you need to wait till you're finished with Herceptin before they will do the exchange?

    Hi Lago,

They did my exchange last spring while I was in the middle of herceptin treatment and I had no issues. Noone even mentioned any concerns. Im glad I didnt know there was any..one last thing to worry about, lol!

Lago, I am due for my exchange at the end of Feb and end Herceptin next year. I made sure to ask my onc yesterday if Herceptin would affect my exchange surgery or if I would need to be off if for a bit and she said absolutely no effect at all and can proceed with all my Herceptin treatments before and after the surgery.

lago: I had chemo during the summer of 2008 - Herceptin until April 2009. TE inserted at time of UMX - exchange for implant during the fall of 2008 with no problems at all. My PS wanted to take my port out at during the exchange - I had to remind him that I still had months of Herceptin left.

    Best wishes to you!

I just finished the Neratinib trial and was told I could not do reconstruction during the medication stage of it.  Will start with that next week,

My plastic surgeon said I can have my reconstruction before Herceptin is over.  With me the timing is being delayed by radiation--my skin has quite a bit of healing to do.  I'm hoping for at least this summer, 1 year of TE's is enough.  The surgeon said it may take longer to heal (up to 2 years) though.

I am on Herceptin for life and had my recon during it.  I was told that there never is a problem with recon and Herceptin.

    Hi all-

I finished TCHx6 the last week of July, 2010 and had my exchange Oct. 8th. Didn't skip a herceptin.

My surgery lasted 3hrs because they had to remove extra scar tissue and a saroma "sac" left over from my original Lat. Dorsi reconstruction. I was strong enough to go home the same day and felt great in two weeks. The tissue expanders and I did not get along well. I am so happy with my implant!

Good luck to all of you going for an exchange!
