Breast cancer

Options

Very new to this site.  Diagnosed with bi-lateral breast cancer.  Having a bi-lateral

mastectomy this Friday. 1/7/11  Will need chemo 2 weeks after surgery.  I feel like I am dreaming

all this. Just turned 65 and have some health insurance. through Medicare.  I am, of course

under insured.  Chemo will b very expensive.  I have applied to several cancer sites for assist. Can anyone suggest any thing else I can try?  At this point, I am thinking about not having chemo. I can't put my family into poverty.  Thank you for any information.

    cathybudd7-

In many (if not all) states Medical Assistance can help after Medicare pays.  You do have to qualify financially, but it may be an option.  This is considered as "medical welfare"(medical expenses only) not to be confused with general welfare.

Each state is different in their requirements, so I can't give you any specifics or details.

Hi Cathy - my best to you for your surgery this week!

If you click on the Forum Index at the top of this page and scroll down, you'll find a thread about insurance.  Create a new post there about funds needed for chemo.  There are a lot of women who are pretty knowledgeable about all the resources available to cancer patients and will respond to you.  The right people won't see it under this thread for your topic.   Don't use up one of your posts to respond to this (you are only allowed to post 5 times in one 24-hour period when you first sign up - until you have posted something like 25 times).  Good luck and remember - your health comes first!
