Polyana, it is a simulation, not a stimulation. Not trring to correct your spelling, but if I had thought it was a stimulation I sure would have been more anxious. The simulation is easy but I did have to have my breast uncovered for the markings etc. You might not want your brother there for that but I suppose he could face away odr something. I am sure they will help you in what ever whay they can. I found my technician to be very nice and easy going. She even let me itch my nose twice and reminded me to stop jiggling my feet. I didn't even know I was doing it.
We do have stars on our ceilings above the tables to look up at. I love the stars, I wonder if they have any shooting stars from time to time.
I am on my second dose of Keflex for the breast infection. I didn't even know that I had one, I am so glad the Doctor and tech noticed the pinkness all over the side. I used to get them when I was nursing back some 30 years ago.
Does anyone know why 26 rads and then 9 boosts? I didn't think to ask.

I have had to be told not to help them move me to get in the right position for the treatment. Gold star for today for not helping.
-
Ginger - the numbers are so strange. My medical onc originally told me 30 total with 25 +5 boosts. Then the rad onc told me it will be 23 +7. I don't know why, but there are so many different variables with each person and with each of the doses, angles, timing, etc. etc. I learned that this is a real science when it comes to figuring out the right approach with radiation for each individual.

Hello Ladies,
Had simulation and tattoos yesterday, rads to start on Jan. 18, 16 tx only. No one said anything about boosts - - I'm not even sure what that means (??). I have so many questions and I apologize if I am asking the same ones again and again. There are 8 pages in these posts and I haven't had time to go back and read them all, since this thread started on Dec. 22!
I saw some comments about not shaving, and no deodorant, etc. The rad people didn't say anything to me about any of that. All they told me was not to wear an underwire bra and that the doctors in my treatment centre recommend glaxal base for cream. Nothing about not applying it for so many hours before treatment, etc. They also told me I could start applying creams/lotions now and anything would do, as long as it is unscented. (??)
They also told me the "tattoo" wouldn't show and you would have to look really hard for it - well the one they put smack in the centre of my chest between the breasts is quite noticeable and they said it would look like a mole. I don't have any black moles - only brown ones. So to me, it looks like a black spot that shouldn't be there. Oh well, for the amount of time that I spend in a bathing suit, I guess it's no big deal. I only got two - one on the side under my arm, and one in the centre of my chest.
I would really like to hear from you who have already started and been there . . . what do you feel about creams, lotions, when to use them and when not, deodorant, & shaving etc. I have sports bras, but they're awfully tight to get on over the head. Maybe I should be looking for something easier to get on??
In the meantime, I'll start looking back thru some of the posts and see if any of these questions are already answered - - probably are! Thanks anyways, you are all fantastic and I appreciate every one of your posts. (((HUGS)))

oakley and others--I find the rad plan very generalized, not individualized; perhaps a better word is arbitrary. Learned today (after asking the rad onc) that I'll have 24 plus 7 boosts, though I was initially told it would be 30 plus 2 boosts. And the staff keeps changing its mind about the rash. Of course I never want to go through this again, but if I must I would definitely choose a different treatment center even if it meant going to a different city. Am I angry? You bet! On the other hand, the DX was such a shock that I wanted to get the surgery, etc. over as soon as possible. Seems like most of you are having better luck. #20 tomorrow if we don't get a major snowstorm...Best, Barbara

Hi Ladies,
I see some familar names here. Will be starting Rads at end of month. Finished chemo a week ago. Received a lot of info and support in the other forums while doing chemo so plan on keeping up with the Rad forum.

Welcome to all the newbies. This is a great place to be with lots of good advice and support. No question is every to dumb. Ask, Ask Ask.
Oakley I agree with you that everyone reacts differently. From the very first time I felt some really weird sensations in my breast and did every day for the first week. The techs and RO told me it was too early but I think I have just been very sensative and my breast was reacting.
I had number 22 today and have 12 left to go. My underarm skin started peeling over this past weekend and my breast peeled last night. The underarm is very tender, my breast does not hurt. The techs today said that even though I am peeling my skin looks good. They said it is dry which is good, if it gets to be wet or blisters that is when they will worry. They did say that if I get too uncomfortable sleeping that my RO will give me a narcotic to help at night. I just need to let them know. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi everyone
So my radonc's office is giving me a choice between a biafine cream and a calendula cream... I am interested in trying the Miaderm...can anyone give me any input on this? Has anyone tried any of these creams and what were your experience with it?? I start treatment on monday and have not made a decision yet!!
Barbara ~ Yes mariposa is butterly. I just love them and they remind me of my dad. I was raised in Queens but I haven't lived in NY in quite some time. My husband is military and he is out of the country so I am staying with My brother in the bronx while I do my treatment out in long island.
Rachel: We are starting rads on the same day. I was given a schedule for 25 sessions.. I think that includes 5 boosts..

Sue, I am recently diagnosed, went for simulation this week, and they called today to say I need to come back. Don't know why. Supposed to start radiation on Tuesday. You say to ask about creams, etc. Can I get some pointers?
BTW, where in Aus? My mum was from Perth, and all of my family is there! -
Penny - I was not told about deodorant by my rad onco, at least not that I remember. I did not wear any to my first tx because of what I read here. I asked about it that day and, sure enough, was told no deodorant other than the all natural kind. They recommended Tom's or Crystal. I found both at CVS. Got the extra strength tom's (I find the naturals don't work as well, so extra strength seemed good) and it comes in a good smelling lemongrass scent.
-
im using calendula gel.i love it.i use it 3-4 times a day.i tried aquafor but it was way tooo greasy.every dr.likes a different one.just be very generous with whatever you use.and dont forget to drink plenty of water.
-
Pennythoughts, that's exactly what I was thinking about my tattoo. It doesn't look like a mole or a freckle, it looks like someone jabbed a lead pencil between my breasts and the tip broke off. It's also not quite symmetrical -- which I know isn't the point -- but it is a bit annoying, like a picture that won't hang quite straight. I'm going to start looking for tattoo artists who specialize in post-rads coverup art!
And mjbmiller, I had the "don't be helpful" lecture too -- one of my techs said "Just lie there like a sack of sugar and let us do the work". I had the feeling that he had started out saying "sack of potatoes" to patients, and been told that wasn't a very flattering image.
I forgot to mention when I was talking to the nurse yesterday, I asked her about swimming -- I go to the high school pool a few blocks away, but it is chlorinated. She said not a problem, but to cover the radiated area with a layer of Vaseline first. But stay out of hot tubs and spas, and no hot showers. That might be the most difficult part of the treatment for me -- I dearly love a hot shower at the end of the day.
-
Mariposa, I am using Miaderm, having ordered it from their website. I really like it. It isn't greasy, smells good, and has done a good job. I have had to add a little Aquaphor the last week or so on a couple of places that were getting red. However, mostly I am just bright pink after 27 treatments (26 regular and my first boost today), and have had no real pain, just minor discomfort from time to time. Everyone is different, and I think different creams may work better for different people, so you may just have to pick one that sounds good to you and see how it goes. (Miaderm does have calendula in it, among other things.)
Welcome to all the newbies. Sorry to meet you this way, but wishing you the best. Treatment really isn't that bad; you do get into a routine. And, if it keeps the cancer from coming back, it is definitely worth it.
-
moyapeter: Welcome to the thread. I live in rainy Brisbane.
My info sheet lists Aloe Vera Gel at least 97% pure, Fauldings "Essentials" Vitamin E cream, Aqueous Cream and QV Skin Lotion. The Vit E is in bold but not sure if that's a typo. Last time I used the Aloe and the Vit E and didn't burn at all. Don't apply any cream up to 4 hours before, my sheet says 2 but 4 is safer. Straight after a tx I would apply the Aloe, then an hour or so later, the Vit E and repeat a few times during the day.
I also used Crystal Stick deodorant.
Sorry to repeat myself, but it saves you going back through all of the pages.

Eloise - My highest dot isn't centered either! Annoying!

I'm wondering why I will have 28 + 8 boosts, seems like more than everyone else? If I'm going 5 days a week, that is over 7 weeks! I thought he initially said more like 6 or 6 1/2 weeks. Oh well, maybe they adjust as they go if necessary?
As far as the tattoos, I only got 3 and they were much lower on my abdomen, not between my breasts at all. Maybe due to location of tumor (mine was at 2:00). I realize we are all differrent because there are so many variables but just wanted to share in case anyone had feedback for me, Thanks!
-
I was also told not to 'help' them move me and to let them do it as they may only be moving me a mm or so. I got the giggles for some reason today when both the male techs were leaning over me calling out numbers, it was one of those embarrasing nervous giggles. I just thought, is this really me?? I also develop an itch, usually on my face or nose guaranteede each time they walk out of the room but the good news is that I then focus on anything else instead of wanting to scratch it so before I know it the time is up.
I have 4 tattoos, they are blue unfortunately and who has blue freckles or moles?? To me they appear so noticeable because I have no freckles or moles on my breasts. The one on my upper breast looks bigger and a bit blurred because I think the tech slipped when I said 'ouch'!
Sherry I have had some weird sensations this week in my breast too after only 4tx's, my breast aches and I was really sensitive under my arm on my side. I'm hoping it's not from rads this early on.
-
I get itches too! Drives me and them crazy
lyndalynda - i have 35, 9 of them boosts. they all have their own formula.
-
I am going in for my dry run this afternoon!
-
Good morning! 4 down...
Snow here today (NJ) - supposed to get 5 inches but I suppose that's a walk in the park after last week! I can't believe how quick I was in and out this morning record time.
Good luck Omaz!
Hope everyone has a great day.
-
Thanks Oakley! I like hearing about the weather in NJ because my brother and his family live there.
-
Well I have 30 total treatments no body said anything about boost but I am going to check and see if it is the bolus treatment they have been giving me. I got my Miaderm yesterday and tied it and felt sooo good last night. I was a little pink and had a warming sensation when I got home and it helped. One week under the belt, have my "fought like a girl and won" t shirt on today for jeans day. Feel empowered. Question should I just use the Miaderm or use it with the aloe vera too? I am going to ask the RO or his nurse about the Miaderm today. They only put aloe vera on my list to use. I have been using Toms since I started Chemo it is has been great.
We in TX are suppose to get the Polar Express in Sunday, that is all they talk of on the news, see it to believe it.
-
Hi Everyone!
Moved myself over from dec rads group. I am going on #18 today and I am really tried. I told my RO that I am done with this. (not really) but I can't believe how tired I am. My skin looks good. A little red but other than that not too bad. I am going to have another simulation next Tuesday so I can get set up for my boosts. The tech even said that they may change my position not sure what that means. Anyways I hope everyone is doing well. Jenn

Mariposa109- I have been using Miaderm since 12/21. It is water based so you need to let it dry before getting dressed. I usually fan myself to speed the drying. One time I got dressed right after and the wetness was trapped at the bottom and got irritated a little but went away as soon as I dried off. I just got a sample of biafine cream and used it once yesterday. It is a little greasier but was not a problem with my clothes. The key is to keep re-applying something every 3 hours. There's no reason why you can't do one and then alternate and do the other. My treatments are at 4:30 in the afternoon. My doctor said it is fine to use Aquaphor during the day and rinse it off before treatment. Just no think layer of cream during treatment. At night I squeeze out a huge line of Aquaphor and pour on a tablespoon of camphor oil (I know, no one else does this, but my doctor swears by it) and slather it all over. I wear an extra large cheap sports bra over it that by the end of the week is soaked with the stuff. I peeled a really fine skin earlier this week and have only been slightly pink. I have a tingly pain, but it looks nearly normal. She said to keep as much Aquaphor on it as I can over the weekends.
susantm - thanks so much for sharing that you are nearly finished and not burning. I so hope to join you!
Barbcard2 - I feel that I am having a similar experience as you. I don't know what to do with all of the emotions. No one prepared me for this experience - they just scheduled it and got started. I am really having trouble with it emotionally. Then I ask a question and am made to feel stupid or that there is something wrong with me. I wish I could just send my breast and keep my brain at home.
Anyone getting Tomotherapy? I chose this since there are only 20 treatments and I knew going each day would be rough on me since I hate even walking into medical places and I am working full time. I think the actual treatment experience is longer - I can't stand laying there not moving for so long in additional to being exposed and there seems to be airhandling system developed from a jet engine that pushes tons of air over me freezing me to death. There are no tatoos, just lots of marks with a special marker (3 down each side and three down the middle) then covered with clear stickers.
-
lynda - It seems there is no standard as to how may treatments + boosts one gets. I think it depends on the size of your tumor and in particular your rad onc. They all seem to do things differently. The tattoos are placed where they are according to the machine they use and where the fixed lasers are. When I went for mine, the lasers used to line me up where on each side wall and one in the ceiling. So it really has nothing to do with the location of the tumor.
Omaz - Good luck with the dry run today.
mjbmiller - I am in deep south Texas and they are talking about the coldest temps of the season for us next week. I moved down here to avoid that kind of weather - hope it does not stick around long.
Wishing everyone a good day with treatments. (((HUGS)) to everyone.
-
Cincilady--Thanks for your empathy! And I especially appreciate your joke about just sending the breast for the treatment, as if it were a balloon which will promptly re-attach to you.
Everyone--BTW, some very funny jokes on, of all things, the Depression/Anxiety Forum for Dec. 31 et al. I myself have never heard the word "ta-ta" for breast--must be a regionalism.
-
Omaz good luck
mjbmiller-I use a prescription xclair, aloe vera and aquafor at night. My RO is fine with this combination he says my skin looks good.
Lynda I have a total of 34 with 6 being boost. Like raincity said they all have their own formula.
All you Texas Girls I think we will be cold next week, but good thing about Texas it will not stay that way, give it a few days and we will be back to warm weather.
-
Sherry - Thank goodness our weather turns around quickly.
-
yeah, it is supposed to hit 70 today! Nice!! But next week, brrr, but at least no ice on Austin roads.
