Flax & other supplements
Hello all,
This is my first post on this board. I have just been diagnosed with tubular cancer and will have surgery on 1/19 & probable Mammosite radiation afterwards. It is 6 mm without apparent lymph node involvement. So, 9 years ago I had a very small melanoma without any treatment. I read a lot about cancer prevention at that time and have eaten very healthy (or so I thought) since then. Now this. I routinely put ground flaxseed on cereal every morning, maybe 2 tablespoons. I cannot sort out whether this is good or bad once you have breast cancer that is estrogen positive. Lots of conflicting info. I am 61 and well past menopause. What do you all think or do about flaxseed?
In addition, I eat broccoli just about every day, plus blueberries, tomatoes, garlic, etc. I also take supplements of Coenzyme Q-10, Vitamin E, Selenium, Vitamin D, Omega 3 Fish Oil, aspirin, and a multi-vitamin. These were all things that are supposedly good to keep the melanoma at bay. So far, so good, on that count. Frankly, I was a LOT more worried about the melanoma than I am now. I am very disappointed that my body gave in to another cancer, although thankful it's not the worst it could be.
Should I stop eating flaxseed? How about the supplements? I see a medical onocologist on February 1 and I bet she'll have an opinion. Not sure if she'll recommend an AI for me and I don't know what I think about that either. I am thankful for any opinions, advice, etc. from you. NJ Mae

There is a lot of controversy over phytoestrogens and i don't think you'll get a definitive answer either way. Its a good thing to ask your onc. My guess: the flaxseed didn't make a difference either way. It most likely did not "cause" your breast cancer and obviously it didn't prevent it. You will probably be just fine either continuing or stopping the flaxseed, However, if it were me, I would stop. Since you did develop breast cancer while taking it, it didn't help you and there is an outside, very remote, chance that it contributed.
Congrats on having your cancer diagnosed so early. While it really sucks that your body seems to make cacners, your body clearly also knows how to fight them off.
Tubular cancer is pretty unusual and keep that in mind when you ask for advice on these boards. Most of us didn't have that particular form of bc and our experiences may not relate to yours.

There is a Budwig Protocol thread on this board. They use flax oil as part of the protocol.
But I would go directly to the Yahoo email group of experienced Budwig Protocol patients--10,000 members. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/FlaxSeedOil2/
There are many breast cancer patients using flax oil. I've used it myself for years. I had a German doctor once who said it was widely used in his country for cancer.
Good luck!
